Book excerpt: The presbyteral council and the college of consultors are juridical instruments composed of diocesan priests, mandated by the 1983 Code of Canon Law for the assistance of the diocesan bishop in the governance of the diocese. With these bodies whose nature and functions are similar in providing either advice or consent to the bishop as the law prescribes, a question may be posed: will the creation of these two juridical and episcopal consultative bodies in a diocese constitute duplication? The study attempts to answer the query by presenting and comparing the nature and functions of these consultative bodies. Perusal of the researchers of some theologians and canonists in English and Spanish resources, the author critically analyzes how the power of governance of the diocesan bishop is shared in these bodies. Tracing the origin of these bodies in the history of the Church, the author unveils their theologico-juridical foundations. Assessing the canonical nature of these episcopal consultative bodies, the author highlights their similarities and particular nuances in reference to their nature and functions. The implications of this study are vital both in theory and practice. They help the priests to have a clear and better understanding of the presbyteral council and the college of consultors which is essential for a better service in their pastoral ministry. Knowledge of these bodies helps deepen the canonical understanding of the said bodies to improve the governance and pastoral ministry in the diocese.
