Book Foundations of Constructive Mathematics

Download or read book Foundations of Constructive Mathematics written by M.J. Beeson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about some recent work in a subject usually considered part of "logic" and the" foundations of mathematics", but also having close connec tions with philosophy and computer science. Namely, the creation and study of "formal systems for constructive mathematics". The general organization of the book is described in the" User's Manual" which follows this introduction, and the contents of the book are described in more detail in the introductions to Part One, Part Two, Part Three, and Part Four. This introduction has a different purpose; it is intended to provide the reader with a general view of the subject. This requires, to begin with, an elucidation of both the concepts mentioned in the phrase, "formal systems for constructive mathematics". "Con structive mathematics" refers to mathematics in which, when you prove that l a thing exists (having certain desired properties) you show how to find it. Proof by contradiction is the most common way of proving something exists without showing how to find it - one assumes that nothing exists with the desired properties, and derives a contradiction. It was only in the last two decades of the nineteenth century that mathematicians began to exploit this method of proof in ways that nobody had previously done; that was partly made possible by the creation and development of set theory by Georg Cantor and Richard Dedekind.

Book Mathematics as a Constructive Activity

Download or read book Mathematics as a Constructive Activity written by Anne Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-21 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains and demonstrates the teaching strategy of asking learners to construct their own examples of mathematical objects. The authors show that the creation of examples can involve transforming and reorganizing knowledge and that, although this is usually done by authors and teachers, if the responsibility for making examples is transferred to learners, their knowledge structures can be developed and extended. A multitude of examples to illustrate this is provided, spanning primary, secondary, and college levels. Readers are invited to learn from their own past experience augmented by tasks provided in the book, and are given direct experience of constructing examples through a collection of many tasks at many levels. Classroom stories show the practicalities of introducing such shifts in mathematics education. The authors examine how their approach relates to improving the learning of mathematics and raise future research questions. *Based on the authors' and others' theoretical and practical experience, the book includes a combination of exercises for the reader, practical applications for teaching, and solid scholarly grounding. *The ideas presented are generic in nature and thus applicable across every phase of mathematics teaching and learning. *Although the teaching methods offered are ones that engage learners imaginatively, these are also applied to traditional approaches to mathematics education; all tasks offered in the book are within conventional mathematics curriculum content. Mathematics as a Constructive Activity: Learners Generating Examples is intended for mathematics teacher educators, mathematics teachers, curriculum developers, task and test designers, and classroom researchers, and for use as a text in graduate-level mathematics education courses.

Book Constructivism in Mathematics Vol 1

Download or read book Constructivism in Mathematics Vol 1 written by A.S. Troelstra and published by Elsevier Science. This book was released on 1988-07-15 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes cover the principal approaches to constructivism in mathematics. They present a thorough, up-to-date introduction to the metamathematics of constructive mathematics, paying special attention to Intuitionism, Markov's constructivism and Martin-Lof's type theory with its operational semantics. A detailed exposition of the basic features of constructive mathematics, with illustrations from analysis, algebra and topology, is provided, with due attention to the metamathematical aspects. Volume 1 is a self-contained introduction to the practice and foundations of constructivism, and does not require specialized knowledge beyond basic mathematical logic. Volume 2 contains mainly advanced topics of a proof-theoretical and semantical nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edric's book is absolutely outstanding. His insight into kids' mental processes, and his techniques for building bridges between real-world experience and math processing are something pretty close to a paradigm shift. AND he knows how to write clearly, simply, conversationally. Howard and Marion Brady, educators, authors, What's Worth Learning. "I have never actually been thanked after a lesson, but today I was. Many times." A teacher tries a strategy based on teaching to her students' intuition, and a topic that had frustrated them no longer seems such a hurdle. Through very practical strategies that teachers can immediately borrow for their classes, Teaching to Intuition seeks to address the widespread estrangement from mathematics displayed by many. Focusing on essential elementary and middle school topics, at that early stage where gaps begin and where too many children lose ground and lose hope, Teaching to Intuition seeks to reconcile students with mathematics itself. It proposes strategies to connect the facts and processes of mathematics to our children's intimate sense of understanding and helps them see mathematics as an emanation of realities and thinking structures that are already theirs. Edric Cane has taught in Europe, in Africa, and at Oberlin College (Ohio) and Occidental College (Los Angeles). He taught math in a 95 percent minority school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. He has a PhD from the University of Michigan and spent two years as a Besse Scholar at Saint Antony's College (Oxford University, England). He now lives near Sacramento, California. The originality of Teaching to Intuition reflects to some degree the variety of his experiences and interests.

Book excerpt: A brilliant tour of mathematical thought and a guide to becoming a better thinker, How Not to Be Wrong shows that math is not just a long list of rules to be learned and carried out by rote. Math touches everything we do; It's what makes the world make sense. Using the mathematician's methods and hard-won insights-minus the jargon-professor and popular columnist Jordan Ellenberg guides general readers through his ideas with rigor and lively irreverence, infusing everything from election results to baseball to the existence of God and the psychology of slime molds with a heightened sense of clarity and wonder. Armed with the tools of mathematics, we can see the hidden structures beneath the messy and chaotic surface of our daily lives. How Not to Be Wrong shows us how--Publisher's description.

Book Real Analysis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Bridger
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2011-10-14
  • ISBN : 1118031563

Download or read book Real Analysis written by Mark Bridger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique approach to analysis that lets you apply mathematics across a range of subjects This innovative text sets forth a thoroughly rigorous modern account of the theoretical underpinnings of calculus: continuity, differentiability, and convergence. Using a constructive approach, every proof of every result is direct and ultimately computationally verifiable. In particular, existence is never established by showing that the assumption of non-existence leads to a contradiction. The ultimate consequence of this method is that it makes sense—not just to math majors but also to students from all branches of the sciences. The text begins with a construction of the real numbers beginning with the rationals, using interval arithmetic. This introduces readers to the reasoning and proof-writing skills necessary for doing and communicating mathematics, and it sets the foundation for the rest of the text, which includes: Early use of the Completeness Theorem to prove a helpful Inverse Function Theorem Sequences, limits and series, and the careful derivation of formulas and estimates for important functions Emphasis on uniform continuity and its consequences, such as boundedness and the extension of uniformly continuous functions from dense subsets Construction of the Riemann integral for functions uniformly continuous on an interval, and its extension to improper integrals Differentiation, emphasizing the derivative as a function rather than a pointwise limit Properties of sequences and series of continuous and differentiable functions Fourier series and an introduction to more advanced ideas in functional analysis Examples throughout the text demonstrate the application of new concepts. Readers can test their own skills with problems and projects ranging in difficulty from basic to challenging. This book is designed mainly for an undergraduate course, and the author understands that many readers will not go on to more advanced pure mathematics. He therefore emphasizes an approach to mathematical analysis that can be applied across a range of subjects in engineering and the sciences.
