This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An English Grammar, for Use in High and Normal Schools, and in Colleges In the opinion of the authors of this book technical grammar should not be taught in the first years of the high school. In the seventh and eighth grades the pupils have already studied the elements of English grammar, as discipline in the analysis of thought, as a preparation for the study of foreign tongues, and as an aid in composition. In the ninth and tenth grades they have not enough linguistic experience and added grasp of mind to make the continuation of English grammar a profitable study. But if in the eleventh or twelfth grade (preferably in the latter) the student resume the study of the mother tongue, he will bring to it two or three years of scholastic discipline and experience beyond that of the eighth grade, and will be prepared to attack new and more dificult problems. Book Complete English Grammar

Download or read book Complete English Grammar written by Eli J. Hoenshel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete English Grammar: For Common and High Schools This text-book of grammar has been thoroughly revised and entirely reset in new type. It forms a complete book, containing in one volume the work usually found in books on language lessons and English grammar. The book is divided into four parts, each of which is a course by itself. The first three parts treat of the same subjects, but each gives a more comprehensive treatment than the preceding. The work of the ordi nary school is completed in Part Three. Part Four deals only with the most difficult topics and those about which authors do not agree. The author has no sympathy with the notion that technical terms in grammar should not be used until the pupil has reached the upper grades. He can see no reason why children cannot learn and understand the terms nazm and wm, for instance, as easily as name' wom' and action-word. Therefore, technical work will be found in Part One, gradually becoming more dith cult as the pupil advances, until in Part Four will be found about all the technical work required for any examination. Book English Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Grammar Classic Reprint written by Knut Gjerset and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Grammar It should be noticed that the work is constructive, that through a gradual and systematic development of the sentence the pupil is to become acquainted with all its parts from its simplest to its more complex forms. Under the guidance of the teacher the pupil is to learn to build the English sentence, and in this work he is introduced to new elements only as they are required in the enlargement of the structure. No forward step should be taken until the pupil has a thorough knowledge of the ground already covered; he is not only to build, but he is to understand every step in the constructive process. The pupils should write their exercises with pen and ink in their copy-books, and great care should be taken to secure neatness and accuracy in this work. Correct spelling and systematic arrangement of analysis should be insisted upon. In the analysis abbreviations of terms and statements should not be tolerated. Every statement should constitute a sentence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book English Grammar for the Common School Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Grammar for the Common School Classic Reprint written by Jonathan Rigdon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-18 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Grammar for the Common School The author or the teacher should try, not so much to make Grammar easy, by falsely showing it to require no thought, as to make it interesting, by helping the pupil to experience the fascination of its thought. And in teaching the application of principles to the construction of the sentence, the teacher should require incomplete sentences to be filled out, or entire sentences to be written, thereby necessitating discrimination and judgment on the part of the pupil. In this positive way practical Grammar should be taught, and not by exhibiting to the pupil examples of false syntax, which is like compelling a child to spend a few hours each day in dens of iniquity, in order that he may constantly behold what he is not to be and to do. Book A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language

Download or read book A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language written by Simon Kerl and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language: For the Use of Schools IT is generally admitted, at least by those persons who frequently have occa sion to write the English language, that the knowledge of this subject, obtained in our schools, is not sufficient for the various requirements of life. In the fol lowing pages I therefore offer to the public an English Grammar that is de signed to be, for practical purposes, more thorough than any other I have seen, the very largest not excepted. In its matter, it does not differ much from other grammars, except that it has more, and that much of it is fresh from the original sources of the science. What ever has been written on the subject by other grammarians, I have endeavored to ascertain; though I trust I have treated them less piratically and censoriously than most of them have treated their predecessors. The incidfntal remarks on grammar, made by reviewers, philologists, and other writers, have been diligently sought and considered. The best grammars of foreign languages have also been consulted; especially those of Becker, Vivier, Andrews, Ciosby, and Kiihner. Of the exercises to be corrected, about one half are the best of those which form the common inheritance of the science; and for the others I have read some work or works from every State in the Union, in order that the book may show all the various kinds of errors which are now current, like undetected counter feit money, in the various parts of our country. If children imbibed LO errors at home, it were well to exclude such exercises from grammars; but when a person has already caught a disease, I suppose it is best to convince him of his condition, and show him how to get rid of it. Errors in spelling, and errors manufactured by grammarians, are of course objectionable; but errors that are gathered from the usage of good writers, are a very different thing. Besides, parsing and analysis when used alone, become too monotonous and wearisome, and hardly suflice to teach the correct use of the language.
