The bees collect propolis (despised by the beekeeper) and with infinite work and a knowledge of the laws of condensation of moisture, have varnished the inside, sealed all openings that would give upper ventilation, making out of their home a perfect condenser for the water vapor that has filled the hive air by evaporation from the nectar. This moisture they collect from the inside surface of the hive, works right in with their idea of econ omy, saving the carrying of water from the stream or spring. "Bees always respond to similar treatment under like conditions by giving uniform results. The beekeepers' trouble is that he makes his treatments uniform but not his conditions." "Commercial beekeeping has for its object the production of the maximum quantity of well ripened honey at a minimum of cost. Swarming adds greatly to the cost of producing honey. Most methods of swarm-prevention have in them the element of destructiveness. Ventilating, removing the queen, shaking the bees, removing the brood, exchanging brood-bodies, loosening the cover, all destroying something that the bees have done, or adding to the work to be done in the hive. Let me state here that you are not going to be told that absolute swarm-prevention is a possibility, nor will you be told that honey can be produced by absent treatment. What you will get from a good understanding of the following pages is that the beekeeper who takes advantage of the laws relating to condensation of vapor, and follows where the bees have been leading will have advanced one step nearer the swarm less bee. Instead of going to the hive and telling the bees (by manipulations) "don't do this" ; say to them "keep all your brood, keep your queen, keep the cold damp air out of the hive and I will make your hive so perfect a condenser of water vapor that the work of evaporating water from the nectar will be done quickly." We will bring team-work into play, and each get the benefit of every advantage gained. Constructive beekeeping helps by getting the honey ripened quickly each night and stored out of the way of the queen. The hive will then be maintained in such a condition that the bees have the greatest amount of comfort in relation to the results produced." "When we compare evaporation by the aid of ventilation with that which takes place aided by condensation, and give this an application of the laws of heat, with its three ways of communication; conduction, convection and radiation, the tension of vapors; and the stillness, dryness and density of the atmosphere, our conclusion must be that condensation is so uniform in its results, that it eliminates everything ascribed to locality, but the number of flowers and the weather conditions that affect the flight of bees and the flow of nectar. All other Conditions, by the aid of condensation, can be controlled by the beekeeper. Ventilation and shade each make more room in the hive, but not with uniformity under all conditions; So we must add to the treatments we give the bees, a well varnished inner surface to the hive, and a cover that, at no time, permits of upward ventilation. Then the bees will be able to keep the nectar out of the way of a queen, whose egg-laying capacity is increasing daily. Room, and the procedure whereby the bees automatically make more room as they need it, is the single thing that we have to consider in urge prevention."

They do duty about the inside for a week, before attempting a flight outside. About the seventh day, in the after noon, they take their first flight, coming back home after having made the acquaintance of the surroundings, and remaining another week indoors. It is therefore only after 2 weeks of insect life, 5 weeks from the laying of the egg, that the worker becomes a field bee and begins to harvest honey. This is im portant to know, if we wish to get our force of honey harvesters at the right time. The worker does not live long in the busy season. Previous to the introduction of the Italian bee in apiaries of common bees, it was difficult, if not impossible to ascertain how long a worker lives. The 1928 sales were 70 tons of bees and queens. Comparatively few persons are likely to become successful com mercial beekeepers, as few possess the necessary temperament, the frugality, insight, and skill required. A prospective commercial bee keeper should go very slowly until he has had considerable actual experience. The majority of farmers and many residents of small towns can, however, successfully keep a few stands of bees with little expense and time. Beekeeping in Relation to the 0rchardist. - Perhaps the most important, but not the best known, work of the honeybee is the conveyance of pollen from flower to flower, thus assisting in the fertilization of plants, and assuring their fruitfulness. Bees are so necessary for the successful pollination of many fruit trees, nut trees, and seed plants that the growing of certain horticultural products has been handicapped by the recent decline in beekeeping. Among numerous reasons for the growing difficulty of successful bee culture may be mentioned, as chief, the wide dissemination of organisms causing death to the bee larvae and thus increasing expenses, and secondly, the replacement of vast areas of native nectar-yielding plants by the expansion of cultivation. In spite of the increased difficulties, however, the keeping of a few colonies of bees is still possible for many. It must be emphasized that bees will not work free and pay their own board as many uninformed enthusiasts suppose. Bees require consistent effort to keep them in good con dition if they are not to become a. Complete nuisance and a focus of infection to other bees nearby. For the good of the industry, the smaller beekeepers should become familiar with bees, their habits, and their diseases. Bees are conservationists. They supplement their extremely im portant service of pollinizing food and forage crops, by elaborating from the nectar of the plants thus benefited one of the most delicious, nutritious, and readily digestible foods. Hive bees, in addition to gathering nectar, must collect and store pollen in order to live and to rear their young. The body of the bee is provided with various modified parts for gathering, carrying, and manipulating the pollen. The relationship between bees and plants.
