Book Construction of Masonry Dams Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Construction of Masonry Dams Many volumes have been written upon the design of masonry dams; the principal features and methods have been reduced to what may be called an accepted, standard practice. It is hoped that the present work will supply the details of construction and supervision which have not been adequately covered heretofore. For a number of years descriptions of particular dams have appeared in the engi neering periodicals, but little attention has been given in these articles to the general principles of construction involved. Within the limitations of this book it was not possible to cover the subject in all of its ramifications. Earth work, rock excavation, cement, pumping and many similar subjects have been passed over entirely either because adequate treatment was impossible in such a work as this, or because they are fully covered in other books. Other subjects, such as power, are touched upon in the most ele mentary manner and solely from the point of view of the man en gaged in dam construction. Thus the material upon source and dis tribution of power are mere suggestions, while the subjects of power required, cost of power, etc., are treated somewhat more fully. It is probably true that for one dam actually built, several are projected and more or less thoroughly examined. The inception and promotion of such projects and their examination by financiers, result in a number of engineers being called upon for estimates of cost. Such estimates must often be prepared within a limited time and for a limited expenditure. To facilitate the rapid and reasonably accu rate treatment of such estimates, a chapter has been added on this subject, and this, in fact, was one of the chief purposes of the book. It is hoped that the cost figures will prove a reliable and useful guide for estimates. Labor costs, as always, must be used with caution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Masonry Dam Design IT is the practice at Columbia University to require of the third-year students in the Department of Civil Engineer ing, the execution of the design of a masonry dam, and to aid them in this problem they have heretofore been furnished with Notes on the Theory and Design of High Masonry Dams, prepared some years ago by Prof. Burr of the Department, and having for their basis the method as set forth by Mr. Edward Wegmann. This procedure with which Wegmann is credited, and which was developed through the investigations undertaken in connection with the Aqueduct Commission of the city of New York, for the purpose of determining a correct cross-section for the Quaker Bridge dam, resulted in the first direct method for calculating the cross-section of such structures and is essentially a development of the Rankine theory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masonry Dam Design: Including High Masonry DamsIn this revision the authors have attempted to amplify some of the features which, in the earlier edition, were little more than touched upon. Chapters on the Overfall and Arched types of masonry dams have been added, together with cross-sections of a selected series of masonry dams chronologically arranged. The last are for the purpose of comparison and showing the development of the masonry dam from the time of the massive Spanish type to the present. The design of low and medium-sized as well as that of high-masonry dams, may be prosecuted according to the theory and methods in this work, as general expressions have been written wherever possible. It was considered best to indicate this in the title while the original page captions remain the same. The authors are indebted to Miss Bessie N. MacDonald, A.B., for assistance in verifying the more difficult mathematical derivations for the Arched Dam. Acknowledgment is also made to Mr. Alfred D. Flinn, Member American Society of Civil Engineers, who had kindly furnished one of the authors with a set of cross-sections of dams, a number of which are shown in the series in Appendix III.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Masonry Dams The subject proposed for consideration in the following work is that of the pro file of masonry dams of such height, breadth and general dimensions as would be required for reservoir purposes, or for impounding the waters of rivers and large streams for mill or irrigation use. We would observe, however, at the out set, that as this matter has already been treated with such fullness by several writers, and especially by MM. Delocre and Sazilly - to Whose excellent me moirs we are greatly indebted - we can hope to add little that is really new, but Shall endeavor, by drawing from many sources, to supply our own deficiency, to diminish the errors of others, and thus obtain results very much more accuratethan could be derived if We relied solely on ourselves. Book The Design and Construction of Dams

Download or read book The Design and Construction of Dams written by Edward Wegmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design and Construction of Dams: Including Masonry, Earth, Rock-Fill, and Timber Structures and Principal Types of Movable Dams The great advantages to be derived from large storage reservoirs, built for regulating the flow of a river, for irrigation purposes, or for domestic water supply, have led within recent years to the construction of a large number of such works in various parts of the world. Where water having great depth is to be retained, it would be extremely hazard ous to rely on earthen dams, as numerous failures of such works have been recorded, and walls of masonry are, therefore, employed. The successful completion of the Furens Dam (164 feet high) in 1866 was soon followed by that of many similar structures in France, Algiers, and. Italy. In the United States a concrete dam (170 feet high) is being built near San Francisco; the Sodom Dam (70 feet high) has been commenced on the East Branch of the Croton River; and the Quaker Bridge Dam, which will surpass all existing dams in height, has been designed to form an immense storage reservoir for the city of New York. While the practical importance of the subject of masonry dams seems to be steadily growing, the engineer who may be entrusted with the design of such works will find the theoretical study of the best form of profile for a masonry dam very disheartening. How widely the types proposed by eminent engineers differ from each other is shown in our frontispiece. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book City of New York Aqueduct Commission written by B. S Church and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from City of New York, Aqueduct Commission: Reports on Researches Concerning the Design and Construction of High Masonry, in View of the Proposed Building of Quaker Bridge Dam Gentlemen: I herewith respectfully submit the Report called for by your Resolutions of March 24, 1886, and June 22, 1887, on the subject of High Masonry Dams, both curved and straight in form. The plans presented for the straight Quaker Bridge structure were made after long study of the forces and strains to be sustained, allowing for large factors of safety against overturning, crushing and Sliding. The best proportions and form consistent with safety and reasonable economy were designed, with great care to meet all requirements of strength and stability. The world's experience in the designing and construction of great dams, together with the investigations and opinions of the highest authorities, in Europe and America, were collected and considered in the plans prepared and presented to the Commission. The strength and cost of a straight dam, resisting hydraulic pressure, ice, wind and wave action by its weight only, was compared by mathematical results with the stability and cost of a dam in the form of a horizontal arch, transmitting thrusts to the hill-sides. For the Quaker Bridge structure, the strength, economy, and safety, of the straight dam, so far exceeded what was obtainable by the curved form that 1 can only account for the construction on a curve of so many large modern masonry dams, from the fact that only within a few years has the question begun to receive the attention it deserves from trained and experienced hydraulic engineers and authors. The popular belief in masonry arches to bear great weight or pressure, is justified when confined within reasonable limits. But no masonry bridge arch of over 300 feet span has been constructed. Beyond that length of span, the crushing strain, sustained by voussoirs, exceeds safe limits on their mortar joints from the weight of the masonry alone, without the added load the bridge Should carry. It would therefore be out of the question to construct a masonry bridge of the length of Quaker Bridge Dam (1350 feet long) as it would be over four times the limit of safety in a possible span. The arch of a curved dam, however, does not carry any part of its own weight (as in the case of a bridge), therefore its strength of arch will bear only the water pressure against it from a full reservoir. Book Engineering for Masonry Dams

Download or read book Engineering for Masonry Dams written by William Pitcher Creager and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering for Masonry Dams In reviewing this book the reader will probably be impressed with the fact that many of the fundamental assumptions of design are based on very obscure data. This is particularly true regarding uplift pressure, ice pressure, and the distribution of stresses in high dams. It is believed, however, that such assumptions are all on the side of safety: for each of the recorded failures of masonry dams may be attributed to a violation of one or more of the standard rules on which the theory is based. It is considered that the methods of design described, and the assumptions recommended, represent present conservative practice, and correspond to a proper degree of safety for the average enterprise, and where considerable damage to property and loss of human life would result if failure occurred. Some of the designing assumptions, and particularly those for the usual unit working stresses, may seem ultra-conservative, as compared with those allowed for other masonry structures. It must be remembered, however, that the theory on which the design of masonry dams is based, is not exact, and, moreover, has not been verified by satisfactory experiments. The failures which have occurred have furnished valuable information regarding some of the limiting conditions, but not all. For instance, no failure due to crushing of concrete masonry has been recorded, and it is not known just what margin of safety the usual working stresses afford. Designs of extremely radical tendencies are being made continually, particularly for dams in unsettled regions, and where there are no government restrictions. There is a possibility, therefore, that future failures will furnish much needed information in this respect.
