Book Fiducial Governance

Download or read book Fiducial Governance written by John Power and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FIDUCIAL GOVERNANCE: AN AUSTRALIAN REPUBLIC FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM represents an attempt to grapple with the challenges of designing governance regimes suited to the new millennium. Power's monograph asserts the need for the reform of Australian governance and charts Australia's fitful progress towards a republican future. Along the way he sketches a framework for constitutional reform, mindful of the strengths and weaknesses of the current system of government and the contest of ideas about the role and configuration of Australian Heads of State. Long a frustrated Australian republican, Power contends that the republican log jam is due in significant part to a lack of respect shown by the republican policy community to the contribution long made to good governance by monarchical heads of state. This monograph seeks to draw lessons from this experience, so as to make the republican venture one of substance for the Australian public. In so doing, Power draws on a range of republican, indigenous and feminist writings in order to develop a new framework of 'fiducial governance' aimed at enhancing the trustworthiness and integrity of our institutions of governance, thereby paving the way for the replacement of the monarch by a directly elected head of state. This is an erudite and thoughtful book that will be of interest to those with an interest in systems of governance and to constitutional scholars, whether they be republicans or monarchists.

Book An Australian Republic

Download or read book An Australian Republic written by Greg Barns and published by Scribe Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Australian republic is so near, yet so far. The prime minister, John Howard, is so vehemently opposed to any change in the status quo that there seems little likelihood of the republic being placed on the political agenda in the near future. As the 1999 referendum showed, the confrontational nature of our democracy is tailor-made for political opportunism and negative campaigns, and will always be a potential obstacle to the republican cause. The desire for a more appropriate constitutional form for contemporary Australia has been placed in the too-hard basket by many of its supporters. Greg Barns and Anna Krawec-Wheaton are more hopeful. They argue that the community is broadly republican in sentiment and that forces within both major political parties are sympathetic. They believe that the situation could change rapidly with a Costello prime ministership presenting a real opportunity to build consensus across party boundaries and between the major players. 'An Australian Republic' examines how the opportunity can be grasped, how the conditions necessary for achieving consensus can be created and how the political will to tackle the complex issues of constitutional change can be generated.

Book The Reluctant Republic

Download or read book The Reluctant Republic written by Malcolm Turnbull and published by Hardie Grant Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-20 with total page 358 pages. The Reluctant Republic, originally released in 1993 and with a foreword by Bob Hughes, was Turnbull's manifesto. It remains a hugely relevant outline for Australian republicanism. The book traces the constitutional relationship with Great Britain in order to reveal Australia’s identity as a nation, and explores the political and historical options and imperatives for an Australian republic. Turnbull presents his plan for Australia’s future as a republic and includes recommendations from the report by the Republic Advisory Committee to Prime Minister Paul Keating, of which Turnbull was chair.

Rather it is a chance for national renewal, and to lend an Australian dignity to the highest office in the land. In short: to decide what kind of country we want to live in. Book In Defence of Australia s Constitutional Monarchy

Download or read book In Defence of Australia s Constitutional Monarchy written by Philip Benwell and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before, since the Federation of the Australian Colonies in 1901, had the Constitution of Australia come under such intense scrutiny as occurred in the lead-up to the republican Referendum of 1999. Just as there were differences of opinion amongst republicans on what form an Australian republic should take, there were different perceptions amongst monarchists on what formed the modern day structures of Australia's Constitutional monarchy. In this collection of speeches and articles, Philip Benwell has attempted to explain the various interpretations not just of the Constitution itself but also of The Crown of the United Kingdom, under which the Australian Federation has been transformed. It is the only known work of its kind and a valuable contribution to scholarship not only for its in-depth examination of the meaning of The Crown particularly within Australia's Constitution, but also as a research tool for future occasions.

Book Freedom Democracy and Accountability

Download or read book Freedom Democracy and Accountability written by Bede Harris and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of the federal Constitution are a mystery to most people, yet it is in the Constitution that are found the rules of how our institutions function, and what powers they may exercise over us. In a time of increasing voter dissatisfaction with how government is conducted in Australia, this book explains how our Constitution works, and why it is in need of reform, covering issues such as how our electoral system can be made fairer, why the innate dignity of the person requires that fundamental freedoms be protected by a Bill of Rights, and how politicians can be made more accountable to Parliament. The book also examines issues such as federalism and an Australian republic, before discussing how civics education could be improved so as to produce citizens who are knowledgeable about their Constitution. The book ends with the full text of a proposed new Australian Constitution.
