Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Book History of the National League 1876 1900

Download or read book History of the National League 1876 1900 written by Brian Aldridge and published by Classic Sports Journal. This book was released on 2021-01-09 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newly formed NL was strong enough to defeat competition from 3 other leagues but was also guilty of codifying two ills: creation of the reserve clause which bound a player to 1 team, and barred blacks from play. The senior league underwent a host of rule changes (balls, strikes, distance from pitcher's mound to home plate), but ill-tempered players, riotous fans, and corrupt owners made the former Western League (now known as the American League) an attractive option in 1901.

Book The League That Lasted

Download or read book The League That Lasted written by Neil W. Macdonald and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-05-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1870s, baseball was chaos, mired in mismanagement and corruption. William Hulbert, the owner of Chicago's National Association team, believed that a league run efficiently with honest competition would survive and flourish. Hulbert, relying on his pragmatic philosophy of "molasses now, vinegar later" and working with his prize recruit Albert Spalding, founded the National League in 1876. That inaugural season of the National League is chronicled in this heavily documented work. The league fell far short of Hulbert's dreams in its first season, but he stuck to his belief that integrity would win out in the end. He not only prohibited Sunday baseball and the sale and consumption of alcohol within the league's ballparks, but ousted two teams--New York and Philadelphia--from the league because they failed to meet their obligation to finish out the season. Despite the setbacks, scandals, and considerable opposition, all of which are thoroughly covered here, the National League survived its first year.

Book The Power of American Governors

Download or read book The Power of American Governors written by Thad Kousser and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With limited authority over state lawmaking, but ultimate responsibility for the performance of government, how effective are governors in moving their programs through the legislature? This book advances a new theory about what makes chief executives most successful and explores this theory through original data. Thad Kousser and Justin H. Phillips argue that negotiations over the budget, on the one hand, and policy bills on the other are driven by fundamentally different dynamics. They capture these dynamics in models informed by interviews with gubernatorial advisors, cabinet members, press secretaries and governors themselves. Through a series of novel empirical analyses and rich case studies, the authors demonstrate that governors can be powerful actors in the lawmaking process, but that what they're bargaining over – the budget or policy – shapes both how they play the game and how often they can win it.

Book Football Gambling and Money Laundering

Download or read book Football Gambling and Money Laundering written by Fausto Martin De Sanctis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional football means many things to many people. For players, a means to possible fame and fortune. For fans, a source of local or national pride, and perhaps the chance to score with a few bets. For criminal organizations, a cover for making millions in corrupt enterprises. In the world of gambling this is no different. Football, Gambling, and Money Laundering describes in impressive detail the scope of the problem, the layers of denial that allow sports-related financial crime to flourish, and the steps that are being taken--and that need to be taken--to combat illicit operations in the sports world. Expert analysis explains criminal activity in the context of football, and how sports governing bodies, the media, and others have created a culture that regularly turns a blind eye. International data and instructive legal case examples shed light on the role of the Internet in the spread of gambling and money laundering as well as the strengths and weaknesses of current law enforcement, legislative, and sports-based efforts in fighting corruption. Included in the coverage: • Criminal activity in the sports world • Financial crime and exploitation in football and gambling • Legal wagering and illegal betting, including online • Illegal and disguised payment instruments used by organized crime • International legal cooperation in combating money laundering • National and international proposals for improving the sports and gambling industries to prevent money laundering An authoritative reference to a growing and wide-reaching concern, Football, Gambling, and Money Laundering will find an interested audience among academics, prosecutors, judges, law enforcement officials, and others involved in efforts to curb corruption and money laundering in the world of football.
