Book What Is the Constitution

Download or read book What Is the Constitution written by Patricia Brennan Demuth and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We the people at Who HQ bring readers the full story--arguments and all--of how the United States Constitution came into being. Signed on September 17, 1787--four years after the American War for Independence--the Constitution laid out the supreme law of the United States of America. Today it's easy for us to take this blueprint of our government for granted. But the Framers--fifty-five men from almost all of the original 13 states--argued fiercely for many months over what ended up being only a four-page document. Here is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the hotly fought issues--those between Northern and Southern States; big states and little ones--and the key players such as James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington who suffered through countless revisions to make the Constitution happen.

Book The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Practice

Download or read book The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Practice written by Lisa Waddington and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced in 2008, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has existed for nearly a decade. This comprehensive study examines how courts in thirteen different jurisdictions make use of the Convention. The first sustained comparative international law analysis of the CRPD, Waddington and Lawsons ground breaking text illuminates the intersection between human rights law, disability law and international law through an examination of the role of courts. The first part of the book contains chapters specific to each jurisdiction. The second part consists of comparative chapters which draw on the rich analysis of the jurisdiction-specific chapters. These chapters reflect on emerging patterns of judicial usage and interpretation of the CRPD and on the wider implications for human rights theory and the nascent field of international comparative human rights law. This volume is a vital and thought-provoking addition to the literature on comparative international law and disability rights.

Book Dismantling Democracy in Venezuela

Download or read book Dismantling Democracy in Venezuela written by Allan R. Brewer-Carías and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-20 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the process of dismantling the democratic institutions and protections in Venezuela under the Hugo Chávez regime. The actions of the Chávez government have influenced similar processes and undemocratic manoeuvrings in Ecuador, Bolivia, and Honduras. Since the election of Hugo Chávez as president of Venezuela in 1998, a sinister form of nationalistic authoritarianism has arisen at the expense of long-established democratic standards. During the past decade, the 1999 Venezuelan Constitution has been systematically attacked by all branches of the Chávez government, particularly by the Supreme Tribunal of Justice, which has legitimized the Chávez-ordered constitutional violations. The Chávez regime has purposely defrauded the Constitution and severely restricted representative government, all in the name of a supposedly participatory democracy controlled by a popularly supported central government. This volume illustrates how an authoritarian, nondemocratic government has been established in Venezuela.

Book Mexico a transterritorial nation The challenge of the 21st century

Download or read book Mexico a transterritorial nation The challenge of the 21st century written by Tonatiuh Guillén López and published by UNAM, Programa Universitario de Estudios del Desarrollo. This book was released on 2023-07-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the study of the Mexican nation, providing an overview of its two-hundred-year evolution, and particularly analyzing its contemporary profile, which is characterized by unprecedented social reconfiguration sustained by Mexicans residing abroad. As we will show throughout this book ́s chapters, the Mexican nation has over the past two centuries followed a complex, sinuous trajectory, conflictive at many points, which step by step built the nation as we know it today, a nation that has not by any means exhausted its vitality or its impetus for continuing to evolve. From now on, the Mexican nation cannot be understood solely on the basis of the population residing within its borders. It must be recognized comprehensively, considering, simultaneously and in equal conditions, people living abroad who hold Mexican nationality. The path ahead is extraordinarily complex, without a doubt. Taking into account its social composition, the 21st century Mexican nation is based and reproduces itself simultaneously within and outside of the territory; therein lies its transterritorial nature. The author is a professor in the UNAM University Program in Development Studies. He has been president of the El Colegio de la Frontera Norte and Commissioner for the National Migration Institute. He is a member of the National System of Researchers and has published widely on topics of migration, northern and southern border studies, regional political issues and modernization of local governments.
