Book Constantinople the Story of the Old Capital of the Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book Constantinople the Story of the Old Capital of the Empire Classic Reprint written by William Holden Hutton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constantinople the Story of the Old Capital of the Empire A Word of introduction is necessary to explain the nature of this sketch of the history Constantinople. It is the holiday-task, very pleasant to him, of a College don, to whom there is no city in the world so impressive and so fascinating as the ancient home of the Caesars of the East. It is not intended to supersede the indispensable Murray. For a city so great, in which there is so much to see, a guide-book full of practical details is absolutely necessary. For this I can refer the reader, with entire confidence, to Murray's Hand-book - and to nothing else. But I think everyone who visits Constantinople feels the need of some sketch of its long and wonderful history. I have myself often felt the need as I wandered about the city, or spent a long evening, during the cold spring, in the hotel. I have endeavoured, as best I could, to supply what I have myself wanted. I do not pretend to have written a history of the city "from the earliest times to the present day" from the mass of original authorities of which I know something. I have used the works of the best modern writers freely, and I should like here, once for all, to express my obligations. I may venture to say that the list of books I here insert will be found useful by anyone who wishes to go further into the history than my little book is able to take him. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Constantinople - The Story of the Old Capital of the Empire: Look inside the book: Sophia that glitters above the closely packed houses, till you turn the point which brings you to the Golden Horn, crowded with shipping and bright with the flags of many nations; or even if you come overland by the sandy wastes along the shore, looking across the deep blue of the sea to the islands and the snow-crowned mountains of Asia, till you break through the crumbling wall within sight of the Golden Gate, and find yourself at a step deep in the relics of the middle ages; you cannot fail to wonder at the splendour of the view which meets your eyes. ...Byzantine coins go back as far as the fifth century B.C., and there were in the early Middle Ages many surviving memorials of pre-Christian times; of these there are now left only the striking Corinthian column standing on a high granite base in the garden of the old Seraglio, which almost certainly commemorates a victory of the Emperor Claudius Gothicus, some parts of the foundations of the Hippodrome, an inscription in the Doric dialect which formerly stood in the Stadium, and that wonderful serpent column, which only came, it is true, to the city after Constantine rebuilt it, but which was centuries before in the temple of Apollo at Delphi.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Byzantine Constantinople: The Walls of the City and Adjoining Historical Sites The attention I have devoted, for many years, to the subject has been sustained by the conviction that the Empire of which New Rome was the capital defended the higher life of mankind against the attacks of formidable antagonists, and rendered eminent service to the cause of human welfare. This is what gives to the archaeological study of the city its dignity and importance. Only a portion of my subject is dealt with in the present volume - the walls of the city, which were the bulwarks of civilization for more than a thousand years, and the adjoining sites and monuments memorable in history. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in Constantinople and Recollections of Robert College It has been my purpose to make it as far as pos sible a history of the College, but the picture of a college in Constantinople during these years could not be drawn without a background of incidents, personalities and events, such as would have no place in the story of a college in America. On the other hand, it did not seem wise to make the back ground more attractive than the picture, or even to set the latter in the frame of a detailed history of the Turkish Empire. The Introduction is a re view of the events of the last fifty years which have led to the recent revolution in Constantinople. But it seems to me that if Roman Empire means an Empire centred in Rome, Byzantine Empire is the most congruous name for a dominion that centres in ancient Byzantium and has, during the far greater part of its story, no connexion whatever with Rome. Most historians continue to speak of it as Byzantine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Byzantine Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Byzantine Empire Classic Reprint written by Charles William Chadwick Oman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Byzantine Empire Fifty years ago the word Byzantine was used as a synonym for all that was corrupt and decadent, and the tale of the east-roman Empire was dis missed by modern historians as depressing and monotonous. The great Gibbon had branded the successors of Justinian and Heraclius as a series of vicious weaklings, and for several generations no one dared to contradict him. Two books have served to undeceive the English reader, the monumental work of Finlay, published in 1856, and the more modern volumes of Mr. Bury, which appeared in 1889. Since they have written, the Byzantines no longer need an apologist, and the great work of the east-roman Empire in holding back the Saracen, and in keeping alive throughout the Dark Ages the lamp of learning, is beginning to be realized. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constantinople Painted by Warwick Goble The foundation of Constantinople was an event of the utmost political significance. That personal feelings actuated Constantine the Great in the decision to establish a seat of government far from the walls of Rome is doubtless true. The insults to which he was exposed, on the occasion of his visit to the ancient capital of the Empire, in 326, on account of the execution Of his wife and of his son, could not fail to annoy him, and make him willing to shake the dust of the rude city from off his feet. To have a placard put on his palace gates comparing him with Nero was not flatter ing. Certainly the Roman populace did not make respectful subjects. Diocletian also, before Con stantine, had found Roman citizens insolent, and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Siege and the Fall of Constantinople

Download or read book The Siege and the Fall of Constantinople written by Felido Ganuti and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2019-02 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The siege and fall of the capital city of the Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinople, by the Ottoman Turks in 1453, marked a turning point in the history of the world. It was more than just another Muslim victory in their centuries-old war on Europe; it was confirmation that a deadly threat had arisen, and had to be checked, otherwise all of Europe would be consumed and extinguished. This work covers the events leading up to the siege, the main players on both sides, the preparations, and a blow-by-blow account of the 53-day siege which finally saw the ancient walls of the city-which had withstood barbarian invaders for nearly 1,000 years-finally breached. The reasons for the weakness of the city are highlighted: calls for aid by the last Eastern Roman emperor saw little or no response from the West, due to the division between Eastern and Western Christianity, and many citizens of the city refused to come to their own defense. Of the population of approximately 100,000, the last emperor could only raise an army of just over 6,000 men, and they, together with a few thousand volunteers from Western Europe, made their last stand against hundreds of thousands of Ottoman Turks. The outcome was inevitable. This new edition of this classic and highly readable work has been reformatted, and enhanced with over 30 new illustrations and dramatic eyewitness accounts unavailable at the time of its original publication. Together, these accounts and the story of the fall of Constantinople make sobering reading, and serve as a warning to the future of Europe more than five centuries after the events they describe.
