Book For Conspicuous Gallantry

Book excerpt: The Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (CGM) was instituted in 1855 as the naval counterpart of the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) which had been introduced the year before, but for which men of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines were not eligible. Both pre-dated the VC (1856). Thus, until the appearance of the CGM there was no way of recognising gallant and distinguished service by sailors and marines. The initial medal was the Royal Marine Meritorious Service Medal but with the words For Meritorious Service on the reverse altered to read For Conspicuous Gallantry. Twelve of these original medals were awarded to eleven recipients; Able Seaman D.Barry received two. After the Crimea the medal fell into disuse. It was revived for the Ashantee War of 1873-1874 and subsequent wars and campaigns. In 1921 the ribbon was changed from three equal stripes blue, white, blue to white with dark blue edges to avoid any confusion with the DSC which also had the same three stripes though with a darker blue. In 1942 came the final change in the CGM s history when eligibility was extended to Army and RAF personnel for gallantry whilst flying in active operations against the enemy, this in addition to the Distinguished Flying Medal. The CGM(Flying) medal remained the same but with a different ribbon of light blue with dark blue edges. In 1995 the DCM and both the CGMs were replaced by the new Conspicuous Gallantry Cross. This book is in two sections: the CGM and the CGM(Flying) with the names of recipients of each medal arranged in alphabetical order along with any citations.

Book excerpt: During the Second World War the need for an on-board technical expert to join the Bomber Crews evolved. The various systems on the latest 4-engined 'Heavy Bombers', namely the Handley Page Halifax, Shorts Stirling and Avro Lancaster witnessed the development of Flight Engineers. This book provides the reader with an explanation of the origin of Flight Engineers, the training of these men and the complexity of keeping large bombers in the air is an enthralling story. Many gallantry medals were won by Flight Engineers, including the Victoria Cross. Accounts of dangerous operational flying is revealed by Flight Engineers in numerous aircraft including those of Coastal Command. Direct entries into the RAF by civilians were undertaken to satisfy the demand for Flight Engineers. Entrants underwent courses of varying lengths but flying training time was very sparse and remarkably it was not unknown for these men to qualify for their flying badges without ever having flown in an aircraft. This book examines true accounts that took place; many based upon personal flying logbooks and other unique material originating from the pilots and aircrew themselves.

Download or read book Dieppe 1942 written by Stephen Wynn and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 19 August 1942, an Allied amphibious raid took place on the coastal town of Dieppe in northern France, when a force of some 6,500 infantry soldiers, predominantly Canadian, and supported by a number of tanks were landed by ships of the Royal Navy under a blanket of cover provided by the RAF. The official reason for the raid was to capture the town's port, gather relevant intelligence, and destroy a number of coastal defenses, port structures and other identified buildings. Allied authorities believed the raid would not only provide a much-needed boost to Allied morale, but also demonstrate to Stalin that Britain and the United States were serious in their commitment to opening a second front, in order to help the Soviet army fighting on the Eastern Front. It has also been suggested that the real reason for the raid was to capture a new German 4-rotor Enigma code machine, along with related code books. Whatever the reasons for the raid, it was an unmitigated failure. The German defenses were more formidable than intelligence reports suggested they would be, Allied aerial and naval support was insufficient, meaning soldiers were unable to achieve their objectives, and most of the tanks failed to make it off the beaches. Indeed, due to the unexpected mounting casualties, the decision was taken to cut short the raid and evacuate the remaining men.
