Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consolidation of Rural Schools It is this fact that makes such a bulletin valuable to the can did, earnest investigator. -if the bulletin is entirely successful it will leave him thinking. Serving the debater also serves the man who wishes to know both sides before making up his mind. Of course the editors cannot make a side strong which is inherently weak., They Can only give such arguments as are used in the actual discussion of the question. They cannot sift the arguments, however absurdly unsound they may be; and quoting arguments does not mean that the editors endorse them. Thanks are especiall'y due to Principal Ernest F. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Consolidation of Rural Schools in North Dakota The chief support of a Republic is education. This being so, then the first and main purpose of an education in a Republic is to train the future citizens in such a way that they may appre ciate highly and participate intelligently in the various'govern mental activities; and second, to prepare these citizens to earn and enjoy a good living in the various fields of human endeavor. This is the prime and sole function of the common school, which includes the rural school. This the rural school once did, .but today it. Is failing in its mission when compared' with the city school. It has been a great institution. It is yet the greatest Americanizing agency in the rural community. In the major ity of states it is the most important educational institution, for it enrolls in these states the majority of school children, and. To the majority of them it gives the only school training they ever will receive. This is also true of our state. According to the latest available statistics there are now in the state public schools with an enrollment of pupils. Of that number of schools are rural (one-room) schools with an enrollment of This means that the great majority of school children in the state are enrolled in the rural schools. Thus i is most im portant that we improve in every way possible the rural school. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Bulletin of Information Regarding Consolidation of Rural Schools 1908 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bulletin of Information Regarding Consolidation of Rural Schools 1908 Classic Reprint written by Kansas; Dept; Of Public Instruction and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of Information Regarding Consolidation of Rural Schools, 1908 The most pressing educational problem to-day is the rural school. Our University, State Agricultural College and Normal Schools have attained a degree of excellence and efficiency unparalleled in the history of our state. The denominational institutions, the high schools, and even the village schools, all report remarkable prosperity and increased activity. The great wave of prosperity that has made the past decade the most marvelous in the development of material resources has also found expression in the educational field. The state has recognized this and at the last session of the legislature nearly two million dollars were given to three state educational institutions. Every true friend of education rejoices because of this liberality, and because of the many evidences of increasing advantages to the youth of our state. These institutions, including the high schools and village schools, have reached a condition where their future prosperity is practically assured. They have acquired a momentum that is bound to carry them forward surely and efficiently. The people of this state are fully aware of the value and worth of the work being done by this type of schools; it is a most pleasing situation and one of which the people of Kansas may well be proud. However, there is a phase of our school work that has not felt this forward impulse. I refer particularly to the rural school. It is the deliberate judgment of many of our best educators and closest observers that no such progress as we have above described is to be found in the common or country school. While all eyes have been turned to the high school, to the college, and to the university, it is feared that the welfare of the rural school has been sadly overlooked. While there are undoubtedly many excellent schools in the country to-day, and while many most capable and experienced teachers are working therein and doing their best for the children under their charge, yet the fact remains that a large percent, of the teachers of this class are inexperienced, and many are most indifferently equipped. Much has been hoped, because of the marked increase of salaries in the rural schools in recent years, yet statistics do not indicate that with larger salaries have come better teachers. Again, the average age of teachers in rural schools is continually lessening. In one county in eight years the average age has decreased from twenty-three to twenty years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Consolidation of Rural Schools: The Present Status of the Movement Now statistics support the verdict of common observation that the little country school house has little attraction for the older boys and girls. Hence their attendance is irregular and upon one pretext or another they frequently drop out of school even before the completion of the elementary school course. For secondary education the district school can usually make no provision. Hence it fails to perform one of the most import ant functions of a public school. By so doing the disadvantages of the one-room school are largely eliminated, while the pupils from the rural districts can be given practically the same advantages that are enjoyed by the child in a city school without many of the disadvantages with which the city child is confronted. Download or read book Consolidation of Rural Schools in Manitoba Classic Reprint written by Manitoba Dept Of Education and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consolidation of Rural Schools in Manitoba The Agricultural College of the University of Illinois collected and published data re consolidation in 1904 at the request of the Illinois Farmers' Institute; and E. Davenport, Dean of the College of Agriculture, writes as follows in the preface to the first edition of the bulletin: "Letters were sent to all the States of the Union asking what had been done, if anything, and how it had succeeded. Opinions were collected both from professional educators and from farmers who had experienced the workings of the system, all from sources the most diverse. Aside from this, a trusted agent of the institution visited the region in Ohio where the system had been longest in use, with instructions to note all the conditions found both favorable and unfavorable. "The investigation was begun and conducted without bias or previously formed impressions as to the merits or demerits, advantages or disadvantages, of this method of administering the school system. As the investigation proceeded, however, the conviction that is inevitable to anyone who really studies this question gradually forced itself upon the consciousness and, in spite of efforts to the contrary, the reader will detect its presence in the mind of the writer at the time of putting the data in final form. "It is therefore the more necessary to assure the reader that this conviction arose during and by virtue of this investigation, and that it did not exist in advance; indeed, there was no opportunity for preexisting opinions, because the writer had never before given the slightest attention to the details of the subject." In the preface to the second edition, he says: "In the further study of this subject in its application to Illinois, there has quite unexpectedly come to the surface the surprising fact that in spite of all the arguments as to the impossibility of transporting pupils over "bad roads," the facts are that they are being transported now in large numbers, and have been for years all over the State, often travelling as far as seven miles and back daily during a high school course. True, it is being done at private expense and often for several members of the same family. But it is done, and many vehicles follow each other daily at all seasons and in all kinds of weather over all the roads of the State leading to high schools, and it is well within the facts to state that without a doubt more horses are actually employed in Illinois today in transporting the older children to village high schools, and more miles are travelled than would be necessary to transport all the children to central schools if the horses were coupled together and hitched to proper vehicles. Book Consolidation of Rural Schools and Transportation of Pupils at Public Expense Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consolidation of Rural Schools and Transportation of Pupils at Public Expense Introduction, - "Consolidation of schools" is the term used when two or more school districts are made into a single district, one school in one building replacing two or more small schools in several buildings. In some States when but two schools are replaced by one, the new school is called a "union" school, the term "consolidated" being applied only when three or more schools are replaced by a single school. In other sections the term "consolidation" is used only in speaking of a school to which children are transported at public expense. When a single school is abandoned on account of the lack of sufficient pupils to keep it open, and the children attend school in a neighboring district, the term "consolidation" would seldom be applied. Consolidation in its best form takes place when schools not forced to close for lack of pupils are deliberately abandoned for the purpose of creating a larger school where more efficient, work may be done, or equivalent work at less expense. Ohio uses the term "centralization" instead of "consolidation," a centralized school being one located where it may be most convenient for the children of an entire township. Sometimes the "centralized" school is located in the village nearest the center; sometimes it is located in the open country. Some of the Ohio centralized schools are housed in two or more buildings; the usual number, however, is but one. Many Western States have schools which to all intents and purposes are consolidated or centralized schools, although they do not replace older one-teacher schools. They are the original schools built to serve large territories and existing from their first establishment as two or more teacher schools. The two primary motives in the movement for consolidation have been and still are (1) for the purpose of securing better educational facilities, and (2) for the purpose of decreasing the cost of education on the school district. Considerable space is given to the discussion of both of these subjects later in this bulletin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Possible Consolidations of Rural Schools in Delaware: Based on a Survey of the Public Schools of Delaware Any considerable advance in the educational opportunity to be provided for the children of Delaware is dependent upon a consolidation of the one teacher rural schools. It is obvious: to any one who knows the school situation in Delaware or elsewhere that a teacher who is required to teach children from the first to the eighth grade can give relatively little time or attention to anyone group or to any individual. It IS customary to find from eighteen to thirty recitation periods per day 1n these Schools. The usual length of recitation is from five to ten minutes. The teacher has literally no time to teach the children, and not enough time even to hear them recite what supposedly they have been studying during the greater part of the day, without attention or guidance from the teacher.
