Download or read book The Consolations of Mortality written by Andrew Stark and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who don’t believe in an afterlife, the wisdom of the ages offers four great consolations for mortality: that death is benign and good; that mortal life provides its own kind of immortality; that true immortality would be awful; and that we experience the kinds of losses in life that we will eventually face in death. Can any of these consolations honestly reconcile us to our inevitable demise? In this timely book, Andrew Stark tests the psychological truth of these consolations and searches our collective literary, philosophical, and cultural traditions for answers to the question of how we, in the twenty-first century, might accept our mortal condition. Ranging from Epicurus and Heidegger to bucket lists, the flaming out of rock stars, and the retiring of sports jerseys, Stark’s poignant and learned exploration shows how these consolations, taken together, reveal death as a blessing no matter how much we may love life.
Download or read book Handbook of Consolations written by Johann Gerhard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johann Gerhard (1582-1637) was one of the leading dogmatic theologians of his time and was the authoritative voice of seventeenth-century Lutheran Orthodoxy. Yet, he also published numerous devotional works and meditations that were meant to be used in the daily lives of ordinary believers. The Handbook of Consolations sought to provide comfort and encouragement not only to those approaching death, but also to those who provided care for the sick and dying. Gerhard himself was no stranger to sickness and death, having lost his infant son and young wife, and faced numerous life-threatening illnesses throughout his life. In this pastoral work, which is the first complete English translation based on Gerhard's original Latin to be published since the seventeenth century, Gerhard brings together his extensive understanding of Scripture, theology, and church history in a practical and easy-to-understand manual that is as relevant and meaningful in the twenty-first century as it was in Gerhard's day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a distinguished historian of medicine surveys the basic elements that have constituted psychological healing over the centuries. Dr. Stanley W. Jackson shows that healing practices, whether they come from the worlds of medicine, religion, or philosophy, share certain elements that transcend space and time.Drawing on medical writings from classical Greece and Rome to the present, as well as on philosophical and religious writings, Dr. Jackson shows that the basic ingredients of psychological healing-which have survived changes of name, the fall of their theoretical contexts, and the waning of social support in different historical eras-are essential factors in our modern psychotherapies and in healing contexts in general.

This book was released on 2011-06-13 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by Lewis Bayly, originally written and published in 1611, has been republished dozens of times. It was one of the most popular devotional manuals of the 17th century, or for that matter, of any age. This "manual" demonstrates how the Christian may walk in a manner worthy of the high calling Christ Jesus has called them to - holiness and PIETY. Bayly masterfully teaches the Christian how to live as a Christian, and to love God with all of his heart, soul, mind and strength. At the same time, he exhorts the unconverted to look upon Jesus Christ, the One that ought to be their great INTEREST. Many editions in the last decade have been published from a faulty version of the 19th century publication. Those editions did not completely update all the errors and grammatical problems. This edition has focused on updating that work with proper Scriptural proofs and punctuation that have been otherwise left incorrectly published, including all the notes by the author that were added for further clarification. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two sermons address the concept of sadness, particularly in the context of death, and distinguishes between two types: godly sorrow that leads to repentance and worldly sorrow that brings death. It reflects on the inevitability of death as a divine decree and reassures believers of the hope of resurrection through Christ. The text cites biblical examples, including King David's response to his son's death, to illustrate appropriate mourning and the importance of maintaining faith. It concludes by affirming the transformative power of resurrection, urging Christians to embrace hope rather than despair.

Download or read book A GRIEF OBSERVED Based on a Personal Journal written by C. S. Lewis and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Grief Observed is a collection of Lewis's reflections on the experience of bereavement following the death of his wife, Joy Davidman, in 1960. The book was first published under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk as Lewis wished to avoid identification as the author. Though republished in 1963 after his death under his own name, the text still refers to his wife as "H" (her first name, which she rarely used, was Helen). The book is compiled from the four notebooks which Lewis used to vent and explore his grief. He illustrates the everyday trials of his life without Joy and explores fundamental questions of faith and theodicy. Lewis's step-son (Joy's son) Douglas Gresham points out in his 1994 introduction that the indefinite article 'a' in the title makes it clear that Lewis's grief is not the quintessential grief experience at the loss of a loved one, but one individual's perspective among countless others. The book helped inspire a 1985 television movie Shadowlands, as well as a 1993 film of the same name. Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, lay theologian and Christian apologist. He is best known for his fictional work, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain.
