Book excerpt: People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often demonstrate restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, and activities, often involving preoccupations with one or more stereotyped and restricted patterns of interest and an inability to adjust to changes in daily routines and schedules. Academic achievement and skill acquisition present a challenge in children with ASD, often times due to a lack of reinforcer options resulting from these deficits. The current study examines the use of free-operant stimulus preference assessments, progressive-ratio schedule reinforcer analyses, and a Pavlovian conditioning procedure in order to evaluate the establishment of new reinforcers that may be used to increase responding on tasks in children with ASD. The results of the study strongly support the claim that restricted and repetitive patterns of interests and behaviors are prevalent in people with ASD, validating the importance in establishing new reinforcers to be used in the classroom setting. Although other variables may need to be considered, such as pairing schedules and stimulus classes, the data do suggest that changes in stimulus value may be achievable via response-independent conditioning procedures. Furthermore, the results of this study highlight the importance of utilizing each individual assessment in the development and implementation of a conditioning procedure.

Book excerpt: This study examined the prerequisite skills necessary to conduct a no-access video-based preference assessment for two children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who did not demonstrate a selection response during a video-based preference assessment. A brief Multiple Stimulus Without Replacement (MSWO) of videos of toys was used to teach a selection response by systematically fading the participants' access to toys during the preference assessment. Once the selection response was successfully taught with the toys, it was assessed with videos of social interactions. A progressive ratio (PR) schedule and concurrent operant reinforcer assessment were then conducted to determine the reinforcing effectiveness of the highest and lowest preferred social interactions from a brief MSWO for each of the participants. The selection response was successfully taught to both participants and mixed results were found from both reinforcer assessments for both participants.

Other research has reported that sensory (leisure) items facilitate acquisition and maintenance of behavior better than do edible items for individuals with autism. Although these findings seem contradictory, the data are not comparable because studies on preference were conducted with subjects without autism, whereas data on performance were collected for subjects with autism. The current study examined preference and performance of children with and without autism using sensory and edible reinforcers. Results showed that edibles were more preferred (Experiment 1) and resulted in higher rates of responding under maintenance conditions (Experiment 3) in subjects with and without autism. Edible and sensory items resulted in equal rates of response acquisition (Experiment 2) for both samples and for subjects with different patterns of preference.

Reinforcement procedures represent one of the fundamental Applied Behavior Analysis concepts for addressing these concerns, making it important that there are powerful motivators to use for reinforcement. Unfortunately, individuals with autism have restricted interests, which may limit available reinforcers and complicate the development of treatments using reinforcement based procedures. The present study tested a procedure to develop novel reinforcers for three individuals with autism. Two neutral items were paired with known reinforcers during work sessions at school. Preference increased for five of the six items and reinforcement value increased for four of the six items.

As many as half of children with ASD between the ages of 3 and 8 also exhibit disruptive behaviors that interfere with their overall development and family functioning. This Therapist Guide, Parent Training for Disruptive Behavior, is designed for therapists to use with parents of children with ASD and challenging behaviors, such as tantrums, noncompliance, and aggression. Based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and developed over more than a decade of research, the intervention consists of 11 core sessions as well as supplemental sessions, a home visit, and follow-up visits. Each session includes a therapist script, activity sheets, parent handouts, and checklists. Video vignettes are available online to illustrate concepts. The treatment manual is designed to be used in conjunction with the companion Workbook for parents. Each session is delivered individually in weekly outpatient visits. Homework assignments between sessions focus on implementing behavior change strategies collaboratively chosen by the therapist and parent.

While basic mands are often those that occur first in language development (e.g., "I want juice"), mands for information are more advanced and often lacking in children with autism, who often lack a functional language repertoire and demonstrate impairment in communication. Teaching children to mand for information can help them learn advanced language skills, increase their communication skills, and aid in decreasing challenging behaviours. Previous research has shown that using the most effective reinforcers when teaching children with autism results in quicker skill development; however, children with autism often display a restricted repertoire of interests. The current study sought to teach six preschool age children with autism to mand for information using "Where" and "Who" while comparing high-preference and low-preference reinforcers through a multi-element design. All six children were able to learn to mand for information about an item, and were able to generalize this skill to a novel environment. Contrary to what was predicted, there was no difference between the high preference and low preference items during training. Instead, the difference in skill acquisition was related to the mand being taught. The current findings suggest that both high preference and low preference items can use used when teaching new skills, suggesting that parents and clinicians can use a range of items/activities when teach children with autism.
