The Empire of Germany in the extent of its coun try, and the number of its inhabitants may be equal, if not fuperior, to France; but the'divifion of it into a great number of feparate independent States, while France has its whole force united under one abl'olute monarch, renders Germany greatly infe rior to France. Hence it is, that F rance has for a century pail: been formidable to the reft of Europe and has twice been able to fupport a long war againft the united alliance of the whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Full and Candid Answer to a Pamphlet, Entitled, Considerations on the Present German War There is undoubtedly a principle of political, asfwell as OT commercial, arithmetic; but the data of the former are extremely hard to be fet tled. The Confiderer goes to work'in the Cheap fide way; he pofis his books, he firikes his ba lance, but he does not give weight for 1nches, though he brings forth a melt plaufible account. Book The Conduct of the Ministry Impartially Examined

Download or read book The Conduct of the Ministry Impartially Examined written by Israel Mauduit and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conduct of the Ministry Impartially Examined: And the Pamphlet Entitled Considerations on the Present German War, Refuted From Its Own Principles Upon a candid Review of these Considerations, it mull be owned that there is merit in the composition; and there are some animadversions in it, to which every man, who is not a bigot to party, must readily assent. The writers ridicule, for instance, on the national idolatry of the K -g of P - a, is, in some respects, not ill placed. And it must be consessed, that the regard we have paid to that monarch, by our public illuminations, extravagant elogiums, and other testimonies of indiscreet attachment, have been carried to an excels, which has done no credit to the wisdom or spirit of Great-Britain. But our Considerer's Antiprussian sarcasms are too indiscriminate;and it is the intent of these sheets to (hew that his refledlions throughout are either false, or exaggerated and fallacious: that, in (liort, he has either been deceived himself, or, what is more to his dishonour, has endeavoured to deceive others. He writes, it is true, with great appearance of dinterestedness and moderation. He has too much judgment, to be abusive or scurrilous in terms: but an acute observer may be led to conclude, from his matter that he has no sincere disposition to candor and impartiality. Book Some Fundamental Issues of the Present War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Fundamental Issues of the Present War Classic Reprint written by William Dillon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Fundamental Issues of the Present War Germany treating of the causes of the War and the merits of the controversy as between the parties to it. Studying this liter ature, one is at once impressed by two facts: one sees very clearly (i) that in such a crisis as this, education, culture and mental train ing, even of the highest kind, count for little or nothing as against strong national sentiment; and (2) that it is almost, if not quite, im possible in such a crisis as this to find a man who can and will judge the issues involved from an absolutely judicial and purely intellectual standpoint. Indeed, it is hardly too much to say that the man who can and will judge in such a way the issues of such a controversy is little short of a monstrosity. All English writers - men of letters, scientists, philosophers almost without exception, are intensely convinced that, in this war, England is morally right and Germany is morally wrong; that it is for the best interests of civilization that the Allies should win; and that the blame for the war and for all the horrors that go with it lies at the door of Germany and not at the door of England. On the other hand, all the highest and most cultured minds in Germany believe with equal intensity the direct opposite of all this. They lay all the blame upon England and Russia and they pray God to defend the right with the most absolute conviction as to where the right lies. Book Concerning True War Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concerning True War Ir would be impossible to find any one pamphlet which could fairly be quoted as representing the German attitude towards the present war. For German opinion is divided; not indeed as to the righteousness of the war, but as to the exact grounds on which the German Government was justified in taking the initiative. A Bernhardi or a Harden disdains the plea of self-defence other German writers insist that Germany took up arms because her existence as a Great Power was at stake. The second school is, however, the more numerous; and to it belong most of the leaders of German academic thought. The views of this school are forcibly pre sented in the following address, which was delivered by Professor Wundt at Leipzig in September. It is desir able that the English public should have the opportunity of studying at first-hand the political ideas and judge ments which find favour with Germans regarded in their own country as men of moderate and balanced views. Englishmen who are unfamiliar with the German literature of the war may be surprised that a critic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Thoughts on the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thoughts on the War Classic Reprint written by Gilbert Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the War No: we cannot hate or blame the people in general. And certainly not the individual Germans whom we know. I have just by me a letter from young Fritz Hackmann, who was in Oxford last term and brought me an introduction from a Greek scholar in Berlin a charming letter, full of gratitude for the very small friendlinesses I had been able to show him. I remember his sunny smile and his bow with a click of the heels. He is now fighting us. And there is Paul Maass, too, a young Doctor of Philosophy, recently married. He sent me a short time back the photograph of his baby, Ulf and we exchanged small jokes about Ulf's look of wisdom and his knowledge of Greek and his imperious habits. And now of course Maass is with his regiment, and we shall do our best to kill him, and after that to starve Ulf and Ulf's mother. It is well for us to remember what war means when reduced to terms of private human life. Doubtless we have most of us met disagreeable Germans and been angry with them; but I doubt if we ever wanted to cut their throats or blow them to pieces with lyddite. And many thousands of us have German friends, or have come across good straight Germans in business, or have carried on smiling and incompetent conversa tions with kindly German peasants on walking tours. We must remember such things as these, and not hate the Germans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy War It is but just, also, to state that the Germans themselves regard the war as the culmination of their philosophy. It would none the less be wholly out of place to render the German philosophers of the past responsible for the use which is now being made of their doctrines. The same thoughts, said Pascal, do not always grow and develop in others as they do in their creator. Though the categorical imperative of Kant is at the present time advanced as proof that cruelty ceases to be cruelty when practised on behalf of German discipline, manifestly a like misinterpretation of his ideas cannot be imputed to Kant himself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany at Bay Readers of this book will find in its pages a clear and logical exposition showing the origin of this great War and the causes which, through a period of wellnigh a century, gradually led up to it. Unlike many other books on the same subject. It is written by a soldier, who brings a calm and trained mind to the determination of the strategical issues, although of course I do not commit myself to agreement with every view expressed. Speaking personally, I am naturally gratified that one who is a deep student of war should find himself able to write in such terms of my work as a General. The more so that he associates my name with that of the great French Marshal, whose military fame will assuredly earn for him undying glory when the whole history of this war is laid bare. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Method in the Madness: A Fresh Consideration of the Case Between Germany and Ourselves All the time that the war of bayonets and shells has been going on, a war of words has also been going on between the belligerent countries. In England a crowd of writers have been busy demonstrating by argument the justice of our cause, and no doubt we were right in feeling that the defence of our cause in words was a real contribution to victory. In arguing we had in view two sorts of public - on the one hand, the people in our own country and the other countries already at war with Germany; on the other hand, the people in countries which stand outside the conflict. It was plain that in both cases, if our arguments carried conviction, victory would have been brought nearer. I felt that this could be done without compromising my own official responsibility, or breaking through the regard and consideration due to others. That which the soldier's eye has witnessed, surely the soldier's pen may fairly describe for, as I have already stated in my Advertisement to a former work, I was constantly in the. Download or read book Germany and Europe Classic Reprint written by J. W. Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany and Europe This little book is the result of a serious effort to understand the causes and the issues of a war in which, whatever we may feel about it, every man, woman and child of us is engaged. It materialised, first, in the form of public lectures given at Bedford College, last October. An honest attempt has been made to state a case for Germany. The effort to do so is a necessary part of any effort to understand what is happening. In this as in all other controversies, a right statement of the adversary's case is the beginning of under standing. Until that is done we have not even put the question and all discussion is irrelevant. If it seems to the author that, at the bar of reason and of justice, Germany has no case, that may be due to his bias or to his general incompetence: it is not due to neglect. Book Why Germany Will Be Defeated

Download or read book Why Germany Will Be Defeated written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why Germany Will Be Defeated: By a Prussian (for Over Twenty-Five Years a Naturalized British Subject) I AM well aware that in the present state of public-feeling the words of a man of German nationality, however sincere his aim and purpose may be, have little prospect of meeting with attention and acceptance on the part of the English people. He could not hope, by any mere statement on paper, to create in them a conviction of his loyalty and integrity or persuade them that the stand point from which he is writing is one far removed from all considerations of nationality and of party feeling. It is evident, on the other hand, that no kind of literature is likely to attract serious attention at the present time which does not deal with the immediate causes of the war, with the various painful incidents in that terrific conflict, and with the question as to what its ultimate issues are likely to be. It is but natural that at a time when the destiny of nations is trembling in the balance, and when every heart is torn by hopes and fears, the momentous present should engage the attention to the exclusion of every other matter of human concern and interest. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Friendly Germany, Why Not? No attempt has been made in the following pages to deal exhaustively with the subject of anglo-german relations. My object has been to suggest new trains of thought and to put a new point of view to those who, either from want of due consideration or from the habit of reading in the Press and elsewhere alarmist reports of German hostility, have come to the regrettable conclusion that war between Great Britain and Germany is inevitable and impending. I have tried to show not only that there is no foundation for such a view, but that, for the sake of Western civilisation in particular and of the world in general, it is desirable that the two countries should be united by a close bond of friendship, and essential that they should not be parted by an artificial agitation. I have received a great deal of help in the preparation of this book from friends in England and Germany, and have much pleasure in acknow ledging it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why We Went to War I Cannot pretend that the following account is dispassionate, and I realize that in preparing it I have done what Burke said he did not know how to do. I have drawn up an indictment against a whole people for their complicity in the crimes of the rulers whom they have accepted. As an American of South German blood, I confess readily to an inherited dislike and distrust of the Prussian. I have tried, nevertheless, to represent him in his habit as he lives, and to draw out fully the implications in his attitude and philosophy. My ancestors and the Prussian were poor neighbors, and the traditional bitterness of that quarrel may have obtruded itself. In the interest of making my contentions clear to others not so unhappily familiar with him, I may unconsciously have overstated.
