Download or read book Abolition written by Seymour Drescher and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-27 with total page 939 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one form or another, slavery has existed throughout the world for millennia. It helped to change the world, and the world transformed the institution. In the 1450s, when Europeans from the small corner of the globe least enmeshed in the institution first interacted with peoples of other continents, they created, in the Americas, the most dynamic, productive, and exploitative system of coerced labor in human history. Three centuries later these same intercontinental actions produced a movement that successfully challenged the institution at the peak of its dynamism. Within another century a new surge of European expansion constructed Old World empires under the banner of antislavery. However, twentieth-century Europe itself was inundated by a new system of slavery, larger and more deadly than its earlier system of New World slavery. This book examines these dramatic expansions and contractions of the institution of slavery and the impact of violence, economics, and civil society in the ebb and flow of slavery and antislavery during the last five centuries.

Download or read book Language and Slavery written by Jacques Arends and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This posthumous work by Jacques Arends offers new insights into the emergence of the creole languages of Suriname including Sranantongo or Suriname Plantation Creole, Ndyuka, and Saramaccan, and the sociohistorical context in which they developed. Drawing on a wealth of sources including little known historical texts, the author points out the relevance of European settlements prior to colonization by the English in 1651 and concludes that the formation of the Surinamese creoles goes back further than generally assumed. He provides an all-encompassing sociolinguistic overview of the colony up to the mid-19th century and shows how ethnicity, language attitude, religion and location had an effect on which languages were spoken by whom. The author discusses creole data gleaned from the earliest sources and interprets the attested variation. The book is completed by annotated textual data, both oral and written and representing different genres and stages of the Surinamese creoles. It will be of interest to linguists, historians, anthropologists, literary scholars and anyone interested in Suriname.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Considerations on Negro Slavery: With Authentic Reports, Illustrative of the Actual Condition of the Negroes in Demerara The question of' colonial slavery contin uing to excite general interest, I offer the following work to the consideration of the public. It was my original intention merely. To have given a statement of the actual condition of the slaves in Demerara, together with some particulars of a local nature, with which I supposed the com munity unacquainted, and which I thought might mitigate the feeling of hostility so gene-4 rally entertained in this country against the West Indies; On re ection, however, it ap' peared to me that the details of only part of a subject, no matter how fully illustrated. Could not in themselves be sufficient to produce the effect desired. Even supposing them to be perfectly satisfactory, so many other matters press upon the attention, giving rise to various doubts, that any favourable impression, if con nected with but one view of an intricate question, is generally soon efi'aced and speedily forgotten. To do justice to the present enquiry we should endeavour of all the circum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of a unique slave colony and of antislavery conflicts prior to the Emancipation Act of 1833. In their hostility to a booming slave-based sugar economy, abolitionists produced dubious propaganda and quarrelled bitterly, without moderating the cruelty of the slave regime. Nevertheless the reforming impulse demanded documentation which illuminates the working lives and social interactions of a slave population - drawn from Africa, India, Madagascar and numerous smaller Indian Ocean islands - much more diverse than any in the Americas.

Download or read book Cuisine and Culture written by Linda Civitello and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cuisine and Culture presents a multicultural and multiethnic approach that draws connections between major historical events and how and why these events affected and defined the culinary traditions of different societies. Witty and engaging, Civitello shows how history has shaped our diet--and how food has affected history. Prehistoric societies are explored all the way to present day issues such as genetically modified foods and the rise of celebrity chefs. Civitello's humorous tone and deep knowledge are the perfect antidote to the usual scholarly and academic treatment of this universally important subject.
