Book excerpt: The Army is in the process of transforming itself and is developing new operational concepts and technologies to enable this transformation. The Army Medical Department (AMEDD) has been deeply involved in the overall Army transformation effort since its inception, and it has identified operational medicine issues whose resolution will be critical to its ability to support the Army of the future. The purpose of this research was to develop a method to assess these issues and further investigate a subset of them. Rand Arroyo Center designed and conducted the Army Medical Department Transformation Workshops (ATW) held in April, August, and November 2002. The purpose of the workshops was to initiate an assessment of the medical risks associated with emerging Army operational concepts and the capacity of AMEDD to mitigate these risks. Medical risk is defined generally as the number, severity, and fate of casualties incurred. The workshops examined combat operations of a notional future force, each supported by a different health service support (HSS) structure. Eight hours of simulated combat provided the context for the workshops, generating casualty data to support the analysis of the HSS structure. AMEDD experts determined likely outcomes for individual casualties resulting from the Army simulation of its 2015 future force. It was concluded that, in this particular simulation, the structure and concepts postulated for the evacuation and treatment of future force combat casualties were overwhelmed by 8 hours of relatively low-intensity combat. This report describes the development of issues that provided a basis for the workshops, workshop organization, the composition of the various teams and cells, objectives and issues, the scenario used, and the analysis methodology employed. Finally, the report provides results and observations. (3 tables, 2 figures).

Book Army Medical Department Transformation

Download or read book Army Medical Department Transformation written by David Eugene Johnson and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army has been transforming itself into what it calls the Future Force, which relies on a combination of rapid operations, dispersed forces, and superior information to enable a medium-weight force to fight with the punch of heavy conventional forces. These new concepts pose considerable challenges for the organizations that support the combat forces on the battlefield, and the challenge is particularly great for medical forces, which must find, stabilize, and evacuate casualties that are spread across a dispersed battlefield. To determine what the new concepts mean for providing medical support to the fighting units, the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) conducted five Transformation Workshops (ATWs) from 2002 to 2004 to identify the challenges the new concepts posed to providing battlefield medical support and to explore what those challenges might imply for medical force structure.

Book excerpt: The US Army Medical Department (AMEDD) is in the process of developing new concepts to support the Army's transformation. Its current mission is to conserve the fighting strength of US Army forces, providing force health protection to forces in a theater of operations; however, what about the future? What are the changes required to support the Army Future Force of 2025? The purpose of this monograph is to conduct a holistical examination of the US Army's medical functional areas starting with the Vietnam War and includes a current medical analysis of the US Army Future Force. The monograph considers not only historical trends from past reports, but also examination of a Future Force scenario by applying systematic analysis of Level 1 through 3 health care. The result is the capture of critical medical issues associated with medical support to support the Future Force in a contemporary environment.

This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army War College (USAWC) is proud to present the 28th Edition of How the Army Runs: A Senior Leader Reference Handbook, 2011-2012. Publication of this text at this time, when the Army has been at war for almost a decade, has almost completed restructuring of its operating force, and is addressing the structure of the generating force, as well as completing formidable base closure and restationing actions, gives credence to the enduring truth that in order to be successful the Army must sustain and improve itself while it is fully committed to the Nation's bidding. The systems and processes documented and explained in this work are designed to do just that. This text was prepared under the direction of the faculty of the Department of Command, Leadership, and Management. It is intended to be used in an academic environment during the study of the systems and processes used to develop and sustain trained and ready combat forces to be used by the Combatant Commanders.

Book Force Health Protection for the Objective Force

Download or read book Force Health Protection for the Objective Force written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation of the U.S. Army from a 2002 legacy force, into the future Objective Force will create unique challenges for the medical sustainment mission. As new methods and concepts are introduced that capitalize on information technologies and enhanced productivity, the Army Medical Department will seek parity in operational capabilities. This is not an easy task, as constraints to reduce the sustainment organization and operate within an extended contemporary operating environment will challenge the capability to provide medical sustainment. If the medical sustainment footprint is reduced, the capability to 'Conserve the Fighting Strength' of the Objective Force soldier in the contemporary operating environment will be at risk. The Army Medical Department (AMEDD) has the responsibility of transforming the U.S. Army's Combat Health Support system into a seamless continuum that will sustain the life of the Objective Force in a complex contemporary operating environment. The future medical sustainment concept is called Force Health Protection. The AMEDD provides support at any cost, however, can it adequately support a force that is more mobile, dominant, and faster than any peer competitor? In comparison, the Combat Health Support unit is a step behind the fighting force in regards to equipment, capability, and mobility. The advent of the Objective Force has the potential to widen the gap between the fighting force and it's supporting Combat Health Support system. The Objective Force is the future combat force that will operate throughout the full spectrum of military operations. It will possess dominant maneuver, lethality, speed, and the technological advantage as it operates over extended distances. As military leaders demand a smaller and more mobile force, the Force Health Protection of the Objective Force soldier will require leap ahead medical technologies and innovations to support the force.
