In its hysterical mode, conservative media emphasizes form over content, relies on the spectacle of debate to avoid substantive dialogue, mimics the aesthetic devices of its opponents, reduces complex political issues to moral dichotomies, and relies on excessive displays of opinion to produce so much mediated "noise" as to drown out alternative perspectives or viewpoints. However, rather than dismiss such examples of political representation as exemplars of ideological nonsense, reactionary propaganda, etc., Beyond Bias locates in such examples of conservative media a mode of discourse central to contemporary democratic debate in the US. Specifically, this book identifies conservative media as a mode of hysterical discourse. Since President Trump's inauguration, the mainstream media has published an increasingly larger number of false or erroneous stories pertaining to the President and his supporters. Some of the most prominent news stories, including the media's reporting of actor Jussie Smollett's hate crime hoax, the sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the vilification of the Covington Catholic students, has helped erode the public's faith in the media to fairly and accurately report the news. Fewer Millennials are likely to identify as conservative or vote for Republican candidates. Core values and ideologies of Conservatism have suffered irreputable damage as a result of explicit and intentional bias that is prevalent in mainstream media outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, CBS, NBC, ABC and CNN. The political agenda of the mainstream media has had an adverse effect on the Conservative party, especially with younger cohorts. Millennials, particularly those with college degrees, are far more likely to identify as left wing or liberal and are more likely to vote for Democrats than to identify as Conservative and vote for Republican candidates. According to the Pew Research Center fifty seven percent of Millennials hold consistently liberal values, while just twelve percent hold consistently Conservative values. This is especially problematic for the Conservative party, since numerous studies indicate that Millennials surpassed Baby Boomers in 2019 as the largest class of voters. This book explores clear instances of implicit bias against Conservative principles, figures, ideologies, policies, and agendas across mainstream media outlets, and how Conservatives can combat the national media onslaught that has become so pervasive and prevalent in American society that the views of a small minority of coastal elites have become normalized. It also analyzes the political attitudes of Millennials and outline strategies, tactics, and messaging that Conservatives can use to appeal to this cohort in the 2020 presidential election and in future races. If the Conservative party wishes to continue winning elections, then Conservative thought leaders must counterpunch and pushback against clear biases that have become inculcated by the mainstream media.

In The Bias That Divides Us, psychologist Keith Stanovich argues provocatively that we don't live in a post-truth society, as has been claimed, but rather a myside society. Our problem is not that we are unable to value and respect truth and facts, but that we are unable to agree on commonly accepted truth and facts. We believe that our side knows the truth. Post-truth? That describes the other side. The inevitable result is political polarization. Stanovich shows what science can tell us about myside bias: how common it is, how to avoid it, and what purposes it serves. Stanovich explains that although myside bias is ubiquitous, it is an outlier among cognitive biases. It is unpredictable. Intelligence does not inoculate against it, and myside bias in one domain is not a good indicator of bias shown in any other domain. Stanovich argues that because of its outlier status, myside bias creates a true blind spot among the cognitive elite--those who are high in intelligence, executive functioning, or other valued psychological dispositions. They may consider themselves unbiased and purely rational in their thinking, but in fact they are just as biased as everyone else. Stanovich investigates how this bias blind spot contributes to our current ideologically polarized politics, connecting it to another recent trend: the decline of trust in university research as a disinterested arbiter.

The first, published by Aca demic Press, was The Language of Television Advertising, and was concerned with how advertisers use language in their efforts to sell products and services and how consumers could be expected to understand it. In this study, the focus is on how politicians use language to win elections and get others to accept their policies and programs and on how journalists report the suasive efforts of politicans. I combine an interest in the language of political reporting with an interest in the language of politics for a number of reasons. First, much of the suasive rhetoric of politicians is filtered through the minds of political journalists before it reaches the citizenry, and we can be reasonably sure that this rhetoric does not come out the way it went in. Second, the press plays a significant role in deter mining the nation's political agenda through its choices of what issues will be presented to the public, how these issues will be presented, and which voices will be heard speaking out on these issues. Third, political reporting can be suasive in effect, if not in intent, and it will be useful, I think, to understand how this is so.
