Book The Protection and Conservation of Water Resources

Download or read book The Protection and Conservation of Water Resources written by Hadrian F. Cook and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about water - in Britain, and in the world. It is about water resources, their conservation, protection of water quality for human consumption and aquatic ecosystems. Since the publication of the first edition in 1998, major political and regulatory changes have taken place; this book provides a clear and comprehensive update of conservation and water resource management issues in the UK over the past two decades, and – in an expansion of its original UK perspective – now includes examples of global best practice. The UK’s 2003 adoption of the EU Water Framework Directive has had enormous implications for the conservation and management of our water resources. In 2016, with the UK’s decision to leave the EU, the governance scene is entering upon an unpredictable future regarding its major water resource policies. The Protection and Conservation of Water Resources, Second edition provides a clear and comprehensive update of conservation and water resource management issues. Chapter 1 deals with sustainability and water policy, outlines the issues and challenges, and asks: what is integrated water management? Chapter 2 reviews water availability and sufficiency in Britain, while Chapter 3 explores the dynamic between institutions and legislative framework. Chapter 4 introduces the catchment approach, and chapters 5 and 6 explore the issues of sustaining bulk supply and the imperatives of climate change. Chapter 7 looks at the contemporary background to water quality issues, and Chapter 8 provides case studies of catchment problems, both urban and rural. Chapter 9 describes solutions in land use change, including technical fixes and their sustainability. Chapter 10 is concerned with emerging governance arrangements, and Chapter 11 takes a global view, looking at successful examples around the world to find positive lessons from Europe, north America and Australia.

This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 2002, a group of specialists on water resources from the United States and Iran met in Tunis, Tunisia, for an interacademy workshop on water resources management, conservation, and recycling. This was the fourth interacademy workshop on a variety of topics held in 2002, the first year of such workshops. Tunis was selected as the location for the workshop because the Tunisian experience in addressing water conservation issues was of interest to the participants from both the United States and Iran. This report includes the agenda for the workshop, all of the papers that were presented, and the list of site visits.

Book The Protection and Conservation of Water Resources

Download or read book The Protection and Conservation of Water Resources written by Hadrian F. Cook and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1998-06-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about water in Britain. It is about resources, their conservation, protection of water quality for human consumption and aquatic ecosystems. Presently there is a struggle to reverse long-term trends towards contaminated groundwater, polluted rivers and dirty beaches. While farmers have to contend with fertiliser controls, and sewage undertakings improve treatment, industry is now under the most stringent pollution control measures in history. Amidst the dash for more dishwashers and washing machines, and in a country which prides itself on its gardening, we are told the climate is changing and this may put further pressure on resources. Meanwhile, recent dry winters have compounded long-term over-abstraction problems, reducing river flows and resulting in drought orders. Since 1989 there has been privatisation of water and sewage undertakings, and the loss of what was once a public service to commercial providers. This has proved controversial, and anything from low reservoirs to highly paid water executives keeps water in the news year-by-year. There have also been major changes in the environmental regulation of water; with the creation of the National Rivers Authority, and subsequently the Environment Agency and SEPA for Scotland. There is now a relatively stable, and regulated, provision of water and sewerage services across England, Scotland and Wales. With the issues such as sustainable development, demand management (including leakage controls) and environmental assessment driving water policy and planning, there is a price to pay for investment, and this has to be shifted towards the consumer. This book explores all these aspects of Britain's water resources, providing a comprehensive description of recent policy developments. It is written for advanced students of environmental science and policy, and for professionals in the water industry and regulatory bodies.

Book Water Resources in the Built Environment

Download or read book Water Resources in the Built Environment written by Colin A. Booth and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water management is a key environmental issue in controlling of floods and reducing droughts. This book provides analysis of the main issues, offering solutions and describing good practice. Water Resources for the Built Environment: management issues and solutions develops an appreciation of the diverse, complex and current themes of the water resources debate across the built environment, urban development and management continuum. The integration of physical and environmental sciences, combined with social, economic and political sciences, provide a unique resource, useful to policy experts, scientists, engineers and subject enthusiasts. By taking an interdisciplinary approach, water resources issues and impacts on the built environment are presented in the inventive and strategic setting of considering the constraints of delivering potable water to an ever-demanding society who, at the same time, are increasingly aware of living in an urban landscape where excessive surface water creates a flood threatened environment – hence, the need to portray a balance between ‘too little vs. too much’. This unique approach to the water resources debate presents a multifaceted collection of chapters that address the contemporary concomitant issues of water shortage and urban flooding and proffers solutions specifically for the built environment. The book is structured into three parts: the first part (Sections 2, 3 and 4) addresses management issues and solutions to minimise water shortages and provide water security for society; whilst the second part of the book (Sections 5 and 6) addresses management issues and solutions to control excessive rainfall and minimise flooding impacts. The third part (Section 7) contextualises the issues of the earlier sections within international case studies from the developing world.
