Book Conservation of the Dugong Along the Andaman Coast of Thailand

Download or read book Conservation of the Dugong Along the Andaman Coast of Thailand written by Ellen Hines and published by VDM Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project investigates the integration of scientific methodology with community and other locally relevant management issues using dugong research on the Andaman coast of Thailand. I examine the role of science, the scientist, government, and the community in wildlife conservation issues. I then make recommendations for an integrated conservation management process for marine mammals and their habitats that are directly endangered by human activities. In any conservation process, it is necessary to understand the historical and socioeconomic perspective interactions between people and nature. Communication between scientists, government, and the community is crucial for effective conservation planning. Scientists can be a catalyst for social change by communicating the importance of the implications of their research, and collaborating with agencies, users, educators, local scientists, and NGO's.

It has a range spanning some 37 countries, including tropical and subtropical coastal and island waters. This plan presents a global overview of the status of the dugong and its management throughout its range. It contains information on dugong distribution and abundance, threatening processes, legislation, and existing and suggested research and management initiatives for the countries and territories in the dugong’s known range. It is hoped that the comparative information provided will enable individual countries to develop their own, more detailed, conservation plans.

Book Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Sirenia

Download or read book Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Sirenia written by Helene Marsh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their rich fossil history, there are only four surviving species of sirenians or sea cows, the only fully aquatic herbivorous mammals. The three species of manatees and the dugong live in the coastal waters rivers and lakes of more than 80 tropical and subtropical countries and are all on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This book examines sirenian conservation biology through the lens of their behavioral ecology and ethology. Sirenian feeding, diving, movement, social and reproductive behaviors are reviewed by an international team of scientists from eight countries, with an emphasis on data gathered in the past 15 years.

Book Sirenian Conservation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ellen Hines
  • Publisher : University Press of Florida
  • Release : 2012-05-20
  • ISBN : 0813042704
  • Pages : 341 pages

Download or read book Sirenian Conservation written by Ellen Hines and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2012-05-20 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important scientific volume comprehensively explores the biology and ecological status of manatees and dugongs in all of the geographic regions where they can be found today, from the Caribbean to Eastern Africa, from Arabia to the Amazon, and from Japan through the South Pacific to Australia. Many of these dwindling populations are situated in developing countries--locales that have previously received little attention in the scientific literature. In these areas, people occupying rivers or coastlines still capture sirenians for food and other uses (oil, bones for carving, leather). In addition, disruption, erosion, or complete loss of sirenian habitat occurs because of dredge and fill, coastal run-off, chemical pollution, and damage from boat propellers. Sirenian Conservation features contributions from an international group of scientists who are working to address the many challenges to manatee and dugong food supply, environment, reproduction, and survival. They share stories of programs that rescue, rehabilitate, release, and monitor these animals; offer reports on practical, replicable, and cost-effective management techniques; and summarize current research strategies.

Book excerpt: ENVIRONMENT Natural Resources and Aquatic Environment provides insight into existing knowledge of traditional knowledge and local wisdom with regard to natural resources and aquatic environment. This book presents the reader about the strong correlation between natural resources and science and its relationship with the local knowledge of local communities. Natural sources such as marine environment and its fauna are very important in human life. Therefore, people create various equipment and modern techniques to explore the marine resources for their survival. However, before the advent of modern equipments, the world community depends on local knowledge to survive. Various marine resources that are useful to human have been discussed in this book. The importance of science and technology in improving the functions of life are also discussed. Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penerbit Universiti Sains Malaysia

Download or read book An Introduction to Marine Mammal Biology and Conswervation written by Simmonds, M.P and published by Jones & Bartlett Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The charismatic mammals that live in the ocean are a constant source of interest, both for scientists and our society at large. The text begins with chapters on the evolution and classification of marine mammals and their general biology. It moves on to discuss the behavior and ecology of different groups of marine mammals, such as polar bears, otters, and cetaceans. Part 3 dives into many different conservation issues facing marine mammals, as well as discussions on how they can be addressed. Closing chapters provide information on how scientists study marine mammals, how society can enjoy observing the animals while making sure they are preserved, and a word to students looking to pursue a career with marine mammals.
