Book Conservation of Spiders Araneae in the Western Australian Rangelands with Particular Reference to Disturbance by Fire

Download or read book Conservation of Spiders Araneae in the Western Australian Rangelands with Particular Reference to Disturbance by Fire written by Peter R. Langlands and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] Fire is a common disturbance in many ecosystems and an integral part of arid Australia. However, there are many gaps in the current knowledge of how the fauna and flora of the arid zone respond to fire. This is particularly true for invertebrates, including spiders, where there are several obstacles to successful biodiversity conservation. Besides lack of knowledge of the response of spiders to fire, there is also a considerable taxonomic impediment. That is, a majority of species are described long ago or not at all. I set out to improve our knowledge for the conservation of spiders in arid Australia by removing part of this taxonomic impediment and examining the long-term response of spiders to fire. To help remove the taxonomic impediment and facilitate my investigations of the postfire response of spiders, I revise the taxonomy and systematics of a genus of wolf spiders. The Australian wolf spider genus Hoggicosa Roewer, 1960 with the type species Hoggicosa errans (Hogg, 1905), is revised to include ten species. Hoggicosa is comprised of burrowing lycosids, several constructing doors from sand or debris, and are predominantly found in semi-arid to arid regions of Australia. Of nine previously described species, three are synonymised with Hoggicosa castanea (Hogg, 1905) comb. nov., and four new species are described. A phylogenetic analysis including nine Hoggicosa species, 11 lycosine species from Australia and four from overseas, with Arctosa cinerea Fabricius, 1777 as outgroup, supported the monophyly of Hoggicosa. Proposed synapomorphies for Hoggicosa are a larger distance between the epigynum anterior pockets compared to the width of the posterior transverse part in females, and a large number of specialised setae on the tip of the cymbium in males. The analysis found that an unusual sexual dimorphism for wolf spiders (females more colourful than males), evident in four species of Hoggicosa, has evolved multiple times. To examine the post-fire changes in assemblages of spiders I established a chronosequence study in spinifex habitat of central Western Australia. Ground-active spiders were pitfall-trapped over nine months in 27 sites representing experimental fires (0 and 0.5 years) and wildfires (3, 5, 8 and 20 years post-fire). ... Changes in abundance with post-fire age were significant for three of the five emergent groups. The fourth-corner analysis yielded more detailed results, but overall the two approaches are considered complementary. These studies make a substantial contribution of new knowledge to assist with the conservation of spiders in the arid zone of Australia. I have removed the taxonomic impediment for a charismatic and common genus of wolf spiders. In addition, I have examined in detail the post-fire response of an assemblage of spiders in spinifex habitat. The high degree of determinism in this assemblage and the strong correlation between post-fire changes in the vegetation and spiders is promising for land managers. It suggests that managers can directly influence the conservation of the spider fauna by actively managing fire effects on habitat structure and floristics. The development of a traits-based approach, which may contribute to predicting post-fire responses of spiders in other habitats, was only moderately successful. However, the development of such a mechanistic approach is novel and deserves further attention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire is pivotal to the functioning of ecosystems in Australia, affecting the distribution and abundance of the continent's unique and highly diverse range of plants and animals. Conservation of this natural biodiversity therefore requires a good understanding of scientific processes involved in the action of fire on the landscape. This book provides an up-to-date synthesis of current knowledge in this area and its application in contemporary land management. Central to the discussion is an exploration of the concept of the fire regime and its interactions with biodiversity.

Book Spiders of Australia

Book excerpt: This book introduces the Australian spider fauna and includes many species that are well known to Australian biologists, naturalists, gardeners and pest controllers. Spiders of Australia provides for the first time information on a vast spectrum of the Australian spider fauna and illustrates and describes over 150 species in some detail. Many other species are mentioned and discussed and a thorough summary of spider morphology, biology and classification is also provided. All representative families are described in some detail and the numbers of each family are listed on Australian and World levels. Most of the major genera of each family are described and representative species illustrated and described. Most of the spiders illustrated are photographed alive in their natural settings while approx. 30 species are represented by paintings of living specimens. The illustrations and descriptions make it easy for the layperson to identify many common spiders and provides also for the first time, an up to date reference list of hundreds of old and more recent scientific papers, books and other articles on Australian and related spider species. This list is organized into families and will prove to be an indispensable tool for serious workers on Arachnida. Much of the information provided for many of the species is new, based on the authors own field observations. The book is aimed for the scientist, naturalist, student and layperson both in Australia and overseas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Flammable Australia: Fire Regimes, Biodiversity and Ecosystems in a Changing World, leading researchers in fire ecology and management discuss how fire regimes have shaped and will continue to shape the distribution and abundance of Australia’s highly diverse plants and animals. Central to this is the exploration of the concept of the fire regime – the cumulative pattern of fires and their individual characteristics (fire type, frequency, intensity, season) and how variation in regime components affects landscapes and their constituent biota. Contributions by 44 authors explore a wide range of topics including classical themes such as pre-history and evolution, fire behaviour, fire regimes in key biomes, plant and animal life cycles, remote sensing and modelling of fire regimes, and emerging issues such as climate change and fire regimes, carbon dynamics and opportunities for managing fire regimes for multiple benefits. In the face of significant global change, the conservation of our native species and ecosystems requires an understanding of the processes at play when fires and landscapes interact. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of this complex science, in the context of one of the world’s most flammable continents.

Book excerpt: Southern Australia is one of the three most fire-prone areas on Earth. After more than a century of urban growth and valiant efforts to ‘tame’ the bush, recent decades have seen more people moving back onto the fringe or into the middle of this volatile landscape. As this movement has intensified, so has the debate on how to best protect life and property from the ever-present bushfire threat. A long-running drought and a predicted warming climate have ensured that bushfire is a dominant factor in our nation’s long-term planning. Following the tragic Victorian Black Saturday fires in 2009, a much greater urgency now confronts policy makers, land and fire managers and communities living in bushfire areas. This has led to a call for a single, simple answer on fuel reduction burning to reduce the bushfire risk. Burning Issues explains that this is a complex issue without such a simple answer. The book gives an account of the role of fire in Australia’s ecosystems, how we have to accept and live with fire, and how we can manage fire both for safety and for diversity. It aims to change people’s attitudes to fire, and to be influential in encouraging changes in land management by government agencies.

Book Insect Conservation and Australia s Grasslands

Download or read book Insect Conservation and Australia s Grasslands written by Tim R. New and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s varied grasslands have suffered massive losses and changes since European settlement, and those changes continue under increasingly intensive human pressures for development and agricultural production. The values of native grasslands for conservation of endemic native biodiversity, both flora and fauna, have led to strong interests in the protection of remaining fragments, especially near urban centres, and documentation of the insects and other inhabitants of grasslands spanning tropical to cool temperate parts of the country. Attention to conservation of grassland insects in Australia is relatively recent, but it is increasingly apparent that grasslands harbour many localised and ecologically specialised endemic species. Their conservation necessarily advances from very incomplete documentation, and draws heavily on lessons from the far better-documented grasslands elsewhere, most notably in the northern hemisphere, and undertaken over far longer periods. From those cases, and the extensive background to grassland management to harmonise conservation with production and amenity values through honing use of processes such as grazing, mowing and fire, the needs and priorities for Australia can become clearer, together with needs for grassland restoration at a variety of scales. This book is a broad overview of conservation needs of grassland insects in Australia, drawing on the background provided elsewhere in the world on the responses to disturbances, and the ecological importance, of some key insect groups (notably Orthoptera, Hemiptera and Lepidoptera) to suggest how insect conservation in native, pastoral and urban grasslands may be advanced. The substantial references given for each chapter facilitate entry for non-entomologist grassland managers and stewards to appreciate the diversity and importance of Australia’s grassland insects, their vulnerabilities to changes, and the possibilities for conserving them and the wider ecological roles in which they participate.
