Book Conservation of Kashmir Himalayan Endemic Plants

Download or read book Conservation of Kashmir Himalayan Endemic Plants written by Abdul Rashid Dar and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a compendium of the extent of endemism in the Himalaya is not known, it is believed that the majority of dicot endemic species of India are concentrated in the Himalaya. A significant proportion of the Kashmir Himalayan endemics are endangered due to a multitude of factors and several of them are now listed in the Red Data Books at regional, national and international levels. For this study, ex situ conservation efforts were attempted by raising plants of some economically important, critically endangered endemic angiosperms species of the Kashmir Himalaya from rhizomes, seeds or other reproductive propagules in the experimental plot at Kashmir University Botanical Garden (KUBG). Nine species belonging to 9 genera and 7 families were dealt with. The paucity of critical information necessitated the present study to explicate the macro-level factors constraining the populations of the target species through extensive field survey trips, and also to undertake measures for ex situ propagation and conservation in order to support their recovery and restoration and provide long-term backup collections for sustained use by the local populace.

Book Biodiversity of the Himalaya Jammu and Kashmir State

Download or read book Biodiversity of the Himalaya Jammu and Kashmir State written by Ghulam Hassan Dar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 1100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Himalaya, a global biodiversity hotspot, sustains about one-fifth of the humankind. Nestled within the north-western mountain ranges of the Himalaya, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) State harbours more than half of the biodiversity found in the Indian Himalaya. The wide expanse of State, spread across the subtropical Jammu, through the temperate Kashmir valley, to the cold arid Ladakh, is typical representative of the extensive elevational and topographical diversity encountered in the entire Himalaya. This book, the most comprehensive and updated synthesis ever made available on biodiversity of the J&K State, is a valuable addition to the biodiversity literature with global and regional relevance. The book, arranged into 7 parts, comprises of 42 chapters contributed by 87 researchers, each of whom is an expert in his/her own field of research. The precious baseline data contained in the book would form the foundation for assessing current status of knowledge about the bioresources, identify the knowledge gaps, and help prioritization of conservation strategies to steer the sustainable use of biodiversity in this Himalayan region. Given the breadth of topics covered under the banner of biodiversity in this book, it can surely serve as a model for documentation of biodiversity in other regions of the world. The book will be of immense value to all those who, directly or indirectly, have to deal with biodiversity, including students, teachers, researchers, naturalists, environmentalists, resource managers, planners, government agencies, NGOs and the general public at large.

Book Ethnobotany of the Himalayas

Download or read book Ethnobotany of the Himalayas written by Ripu M. Kunwar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 2075 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in recent years has increasingly shifted away from purely academic research, and into applied aspects of the discipline, including climate change research, conservation, and sustainable development. It has by now widely been recognized that “traditional” knowledge is always in flux and adapting to a quickly changing environment. Trends of globalization, especially the globalization of plant markets, have greatly influenced how plant resources are managed nowadays. While ethnobotanical studies are now available from many regions of the world, no comprehensive encyclopedic series focusing on the worlds mountain regions is available in the market. Scholars in plant sciences worldwide will be interested in this website and its dynamic content. The field (and thus the market) of ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology has grown considerably in recent years. Student interest is on the rise, attendance at professional conferences has grown steadily, and the number of professionals calling themselves ethnobotanists has increased significantly (the various societies, like the Society for Economic Botany, the International Society of Ethnopharmacology, the Society of Ethnobiology, and the International Society for Ethnobiology currently have thousands of members). Growth has been most robust in BRIC countries. This new MRW on Ethnobotany of the Himalayas takes advantage of the increasing international interest and scholarship in the field of mountain research. It includes the best and latest research on a full range of descriptive, methodological, theoretical, and applied research on the most important plants in the Himalayas. Each contribution is scientifically rigorous and contributes to the overall field of study.

Applications of the results for developing an appropriate strategy for mass scale production and conservation of these species are suggested.

Book Biodiversity and Ethnobotany of Himalayan Region of Azad Kashmir

Download or read book Biodiversity and Ethnobotany of Himalayan Region of Azad Kashmir written by Muhammad Azam Khan and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man has always been facinated by the diversity of life. Huminity derived all of its food and many medicines and industrial products from wild and domesticated plant life. Kashmir is bestowed with a unique biodiversity comprising of different climatic zones and wide range of plant species. Plants are crucial for the diversity of terrestrial life. The medicinal values of plants play vital role in general health of mankind. Allopathic drugs cause many side effects as compared to the extracts of medicinal plants. All indigenous remedies, whether traditional or modern, have originated directly or indirectly from folklore and rituals or measuring hold to the treasure of folk medicinal knowledge and ethnomedical botany. With rapid population growth and the experience of economic development by the means of outside interventions, the natural habitats have already been destroyed to considerable extent. This situation is particularly critical in the Himalayan region that is documented in this work.Conservation of biodiversity calls for both global attention and prompt action at regional level also.
