  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 140 pages

Download or read book The Black Poplar written by Fiona Cooper and published by Windgather Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cultural and ecological biography of the black poplar in Britain. Fiona cooper explores the tree's historic place in the landscape, and how it has played a role in folklore and in the work of poets such as William Cowper. She explains how the tree has been used through the centuries as timber and in medicine, and then addresses the question of its conservation. She investigates the reasons for the black poplar's decline, and focuses in particular on the important populations in the Vale of Aylesbury and in Manchester, which is in danger of completely losing trees which for a century have been a distinctive feature of the urban landscape. The key to the species' survival in Britain may in fact lie in our own understanding of its genetic make-up.

Book Biology of Populus and Its Implications for Management and Conservation

Download or read book Biology of Populus and Its Implications for Management and Conservation written by National Research Council Canada and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Poplar is increasingly recognized as an excellent model tree for the study of tree growth and its underlying physiology and genetics. By studying trees of the genus Populus (poplars, cottonwoods, aspens), which in their native ecosystems play a major role in the re-colonization of sites after disturbances, new insights have been gained into plantation culture and the development of improved cultivars. Of the 20 chapters in this publication, editored by an international group of researchers, one section deals with systematics, genetics, genetic manipulation and biotic interactions of Populus, while the other deals with stress response and the physiology of growth and productivity" --

Book Poplars and Willows

Download or read book Poplars and Willows written by Jud G. Isebrands and published by CABI. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poplars and willows form an important component of forestry and agricultural systems, providing a wide range of wood and non-wood products. This book synthesizes research on poplars and willows, providing a practical worldwide overview and guide to their basic characteristics, cultivation and use, issues, problems and trends. Prominence is given to environmental benefits and the importance of poplar and willow cultivation in meeting the needs of people and communities, sustainable livelihoods, land use and development.

Book Forests of Southeast Europe Under a Changing Climate

Download or read book Forests of Southeast Europe Under a Changing Climate written by Mirjana Šijačić-Nikolić and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates the different prospective, scientific and practical experience of researchers as well as beneficiaries and stakeholders in the field of forest conservation in Southeast Europe. The book stresses the importance of improving the adaptability of these ecosystems to the impacts of climate change. Gathered around a common idea, the book presents the latest results in forest genetic resources conservation at national and regional level. The chapters are written by experts from: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Greece, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia. The book presents the current state, legal and institutional framework for conservation and management of forest genetic resources, case studies and best practices in the application of different conservation methods and techniques (in situ and ex situ) as well as climate change aspects in this area. This book will be of particular interest to scientists and experts in the field of forestry, environmental protection and rural development, bachelor, master and doctoral students, as well as for anyone interested in the conservation issues fuelled by ethical and economic motives.

Book Plant Genetic Conservation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nigel Maxted
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2020-09-10
  • ISBN : 1108907776
  • Pages : 598 pages

Download or read book Plant Genetic Conservation written by Nigel Maxted and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant diversity sustains all animal life, and the genetic diversity within plants underpins global food security. This text provides a practical and theoretical introduction to the strategies and actions to adopt for conserving plant genetic variation, as well as explaining how humans can exploit this diversity for sustainable development. Notably readable, it initially offers current knowledge on the characterization and evaluation of plant genetic resources. The authors then discuss strategies from in situ and ex situ conservation to crop breeding, exploring how these can be used to improve food security in the face of increasing agrobiodiversity loss, human population growth and climate change. Each chapter draws on examples from the literature or the authors' research and includes further reading references. Containing other useful features such as a glossary, it is invaluable for professionals and undergraduate and graduate students in plant sciences, ecology, conservation, genetics and natural resource management.

Book Genetics and Genomics of Populus

Download or read book Genetics and Genomics of Populus written by Stefan Jansson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-02 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetics and Genomics of Populus provides an indepth description of the genetic and genomic tools and approaches for Populus, examines the biology that has been elucidated using genomics, and looks to the future of this unique model plant. This volume is designed to serve both experienced Populus researchers and newcomers to the field. Contributors to the volume are a blend of researchers, some who have spent most of their research career on Populus and others that have moved to Populus from other model systems. Research on Populus forms a useful complement to research on Arabidopsis. In fact, many plant species found in nature are – in terms of the life history and genetics – more similar to Populus than to Arabidopsis. Thus, the genetic and genomic strategies and tools developed by the Populus community, and showcased in this volume, will hopefully provide inspiration for researchers working in other, less well developed, systems.
