Book Landscape Genetics and Conservation Genetics of Gopher Tortoises Gopherus Polyphemus Across an Extensive Military Landscape

Download or read book Landscape Genetics and Conservation Genetics of Gopher Tortoises Gopherus Polyphemus Across an Extensive Military Landscape written by Jeffrey Alan Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying and maintaining genetic diversity in threatened and endangered species is something conservationists have recognized is of great importance. Genetic studies of federally threatened gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) populations located on Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center (Camp Shelby) in Hattiesburg, MS, is lacking in baseline information concerning genetic diversity and population structuring across the landscape. The objectives of this study were to assess the genetic variation of tortoises and how genetic variation is partitioned across Camp Shelby. Utilizing microsatellite DNA markers, genetic diversity was assessed and found to be low (H e = 0.25, H o = 0.22, avg. # alleles per locus = 1.97). When comparing the study population to populations in the eastern portions of the tortoise's range, alleles/locus (Georgia = 3.03, Florida = 3.40) and observed heterozygosity (Georgia = 0.42, Florida = 0.43) were significantly lower (P

Book Conservation and Coexistence of a Federally Listed Species Within a Landscape Highly Modified for Commodity Production Gopher Tortoise Gopherus Polyphemus and Intensive Pine Pinus Spp Management

Download or read book Conservation and Coexistence of a Federally Listed Species Within a Landscape Highly Modified for Commodity Production Gopher Tortoise Gopherus Polyphemus and Intensive Pine Pinus Spp Management written by Duston R. Duffie and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus; hereinafter, tortoise) is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in the western portion of its range. Across the species’ range, approximately 70 % of potential habitat is privately owned, and these properties are often managed primarily for timber production. However, tortoise ecology on private, working forest landscapes remains poorly understood. To provide a better understanding of tortoise response to active forest management, I evaluated population demographics, movement ecology, and habitat selection of two tortoise populations: former Ben’s Creek Wildlife Management Area (BC) in Washington Parish, Louisiana and Perry County Gopher Tortoise Management Unit (PCGTMU) in Perry County, Mississippi. At BC, tortoises were generally clustered along utility rights-of- way and roadways. At PCGTMU, tortoises were clustered within forest stands with high quality soils. Low recruitment has been documented at BC for the last 25 years. However, PCGTMU appears to have a stable population with active recruitment.

Book Biology and Conservation of North American Tortoises

Download or read book Biology and Conservation of North American Tortoises written by David C. Rostal and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive book ever published on North America's native tortoises. Tortoises, those unmistakable turtles, evolved from a lineage that split off from the familiar pond turtles roughly 100 million years ago. Over time, these plant-eating land turtles spread around the world, growing to an enormous size (depending on the species) and living so long that they have become the stuff of legends. By most accounts, they are indeed the longest-lived of the turtles, with good records suggesting individuals may live as long as 180 years (anecdotal records suggest that some reach ages of 200 years or more). Providing the first comprehensive treatment of North America’s tortoises, Biology and Conservation of North American Tortoises brings together leading experts to give an overview of tortoise morphology, taxonomy, systematics, paleontology, physiology, ecology, behavior, reproduction, diet, growth, health, and conservation. The contributors carefully combine their own expertise and observations with results from studies conducted by hundreds of other researchers. The result is a book that belongs in the library of every herpetologist. Contributors Gustavo Aguirre L. Linda J. Allison Matthew J. Aresco Roy C. Averill-Murray Joan E. Berish Kristin H. Book Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants 12 Month Finding on Petition to List Gopher Tortoise as Threatened in Eastern Portion of Its Range Us Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation Fws 2018 Edition

Download or read book Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants 12 Month Finding on Petition to List Gopher Tortoise as Threatened in Eastern Portion of Its Range Us Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation Fws 2018 Edition written by The Law The Law Library and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants - 12-Month Finding on Petition to List Gopher Tortoise as Threatened in Eastern Portion of its Range (US Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation) (FWS) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants - 12-Month Finding on Petition to List Gopher Tortoise as Threatened in Eastern Portion of its Range (US Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation) (FWS) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), announce a 12-month finding on a petition to list the gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) in the eastern portion of its range (east of the Mobile and Tombigbee Rivers) as threatened and to designate critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. In this finding, we also evaluate whether the status of the gopher tortoise in the western portion of its range (west of the Mobile and Tombigbee Rivers) is accurate. After review of all available scientific and commercial information, we find that the current listing of the gopher tortoise as a threatened species in the western portion of its range is accurate and that listing the gopher tortoise in the eastern portion of its range is warranted. Currently, however, listing the gopher tortoise in the eastern portion of its range is precluded by higher priority actions to amend the Lists of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants. We will add the gopher tortoise in the eastern portion of its range to our candidate species list, and we will develop a proposed rule to list the gopher tortoise in the eastern portion of its range as our priorities allow. We will make any determination on critical habitat during development of the proposed listing rule. In any interim period we will address the status of the candidate taxon through our annual Candidate Notice of Review and will work through partnerships to conserve the species by improving the habitat and removing the threats with the objective to make listing unnecessary. The Service's candidate conservation efforts place great emphasis on coordination with the states and other partners, voluntary conservation efforts, and may include tools such as Candidate Conservation Agreements with Assurances. Even though we are currently unable to take action to list the gopher tortoise in the eastern portion of its range, this does not affect the status of the gopher tortoise in the western portion of its range, where it remains listed as threatened. This book contains: - The complete text of the Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants - 12-Month Finding on Petition to List Gopher Tortoise as Threatened in Eastern Portion of its Range (US Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation) (FWS) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section

Book Long term Population Ecology and Movement Patterns of Gopher Tortoises Gopherus Polyphemus in Southwest Georgia

Download or read book Long term Population Ecology and Movement Patterns of Gopher Tortoises Gopherus Polyphemus in Southwest Georgia written by Alexander David Wright and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation have led to an estimated 80% range-wide decline of gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) populations across the Southeastern Coastal Plain. Recently, the gopher tortoise was identified as a candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act in the eastern part of its range. To support an adaptive landscape planning and decision framework for gopher tortoise conservation, I examined the population dynamics and movement patterns of four gopher tortoise populations on a large private reserve in southwestern Georgia, where tortoises were previously marked/recaptured from 1995-2000. It is critical to understand how tortoise populations vary in space and time at large spatial and temporal scales to protect a long-lived species, such as the gopher tortoise, into perpetuity. With further understanding of the long-term population ecology and movement patterns, we can better evaluate the roles of emigration and survival within populations to inform reserve design and decision analysis for the species' conservation.

Book Bibliography of the North American Land Tortoises genus Gopherus

Download or read book Bibliography of the North American Land Tortoises genus Gopherus written by John F. Douglass and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land tortoises of the genus Gopherus are an important element in the fauna of southern North America. Information on the four living species is widely scattered in various popular and scientific books and periodicals. An extensive search was made for literature on behavior and ecology of tortoises in this group. This compilation is intended as an aid to herpetologists and conservationists interested in these animals; it is hoped that it will serve as a directory to available information, prevent unnecessary duplication of effort, and help illuminate research needs. Each numbered item in the bibliography has been read and its contents indexed by subject. The references cited in each article have also been checked. A copy of each paper listed is on file in the Library of Archibold Biological Station.

Book Species Profile Gopher Tortoise Gopherus Polyphemus on Military Installations in the Southeastern United States

Download or read book Species Profile Gopher Tortoise Gopherus Polyphemus on Military Installations in the Southeastern United States written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is the only tortoise that occurs east of the Mississippi River. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has separated the species into two main populations. The western population (southwest Mississippi and southeast Louisiana) is Federally listed as threatened; the eastern population, which occurs in southern Alabama and Georgia, extreme southwestern South Carolina, and most of Florida, is a former candidate for listing as threatened. Gopher tortoises occupy a wide range of open, upland habitats with a well-drained, deep sandy substrate, primarily longleaf pine-xerophytic oak woodlands (sandhills). They have been documented on several military installations in the Southeast. This report is one of a series of 'Species Profiles' being developed for threatened, endangered, and sensitive species inhabiting southeastern United States plant communities. The work is being conducted as part of the Department of Defense (DoD) Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP). The report is designed to supplement information provided in plant community management reports for major United States plant communities found on military installations. Information provided on the gopher tortoise includes status, life history and ecology, habitat requirements, impacts and cause of decline, management and protection, and inventory and monitoring.

Book Investigation of Health in Translocated Gopher Tortoises gopherus Polyphemus at a Protected Site in Northwest Florida

Download or read book Investigation of Health in Translocated Gopher Tortoises gopherus Polyphemus at a Protected Site in Northwest Florida written by Rebecca Anne Cozad and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) are state listed as threatened throughout most of their range (and federally protected in the western-most portion), but are still facing population declines as a result of habitat loss and fragmentation. Throughout the state of Florida, an estimated 22,000 tortoises are in need of relocation as their habitat is being developed. Nokuse Plantation is a protected conservation preserve that has received nearly 4,500 of these translocated tortoises since 2006. From 2012 until 2015, 90 of these tortoises were found sick or dead at multiple enclosures on the property. Thus far, clinical signs and post-mortem findings suggest starvation as the immediate cause of death, but habitat analyses indicate these sites are suitable habitat with easy access to typical gopher tortoise forage plants. This project investigates the demographic, spatial, temporal, and environmental factors that are contributing to this mortality event and define potential predictors of mortality.
