Book Consequences of Brood Parasitism by Cowbirds on House Finches in a New Area of Sympatry

Download or read book Consequences of Brood Parasitism by Cowbirds on House Finches in a New Area of Sympatry written by Daniel Raymond Kozlovic and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I investigated interactions between the brood parasitic Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) and House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) host during 1983-1993. House Finches are native to western North America where they are sympatric with cowbirds. Recent introduction of House Finches to eastern North America has resulted in the association of both species there. Frequency of parasitism on House Finches appears to be related to duration of sympatry; the species is seldom parasitized in its native range but is frequently parasitized in its naturalized range. To determine the mechanisms responsible for this difference in host exploitation, I studied the consequences of parasitism on both species in California and in Ontario where cowbirds have very recently encountered the House Finch. House Finches were heavily parasitized soon after contact with cowbirds but sustained relatively little reproductive loss to cowbird activity. House Finches represent the most common cowbird host in urban habitat and in some non urban environments. Large numbers of House Finches in concert with frequent parasitism suggests that this host may serve an important role in influencing cowbird reproductive success. Cowbirds were not successfully reared in House Finch nests. This is apparently the result of an inappropriate diet (seeds) fed to cowbird young by their foster parents. Accordingly, the House Finch is an unsuitable host species. Failure of parasitism in House Finch nests indicates that host diet may be important in determining cowbird choice of host. Parasitism was not detected at Goleta, California. Frequency of cowbird parasitism on House Finches in eastern North America varied with their time in sympatry. Frequency of parasitism was highest in areas of initial contact between the species and nonexistent after 20 years of sympatry. Decrease in parasitism over time suggests cowbird response to an unsuitable host. Differential reproductive success as well as learning by cowbirds may contribute to the observed decrease in parasitism. It is suggested that host discrimination by a generalist parasite resulting in changes in host preference may occur rapidly.

Book excerpt: Brood parasitism has become one of the most flourishing areas of research in evolutionary ecology and one of the best model systems for investigating coevolution. This subject has undergone remarkable advances during the last two decades, but has not been covered by any book in the 21st century. This book offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the fascinating field of avian brood parasitism. The topics covered include conspecific brood parasitism; evolution and phylogenetic history of avian brood parasites; parasitic behaviour used by brood parasites; adaptations and counter-adaptations of brood parasites and their hosts at every stage of the breeding cycle (before laying, egg, chick and fledgling stages); factors affecting the evolution of host defences and parasitic attacks; the role of phenotypic plasticity in host defences; mechanisms driving egg recognition and rejection; evolution of nest sharing or nest killing by brood parasite chicks; begging behaviour in parasitized nests and food delivery by host adults; and recognition of conspecifics by juvenile brood parasites. This volume provides a comprehensive reference resource for readers and researchers with an interest in birds, behaviour and evolution, as well as a source of hypotheses and predictions for future investigations into this dynamic subject.

Book Cowbirds and Other Brood Parasites

Download or read book Cowbirds and Other Brood Parasites written by Catherine P. Ortega and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brown-headed Cowbird is known to use the nests of more than 200 other bird species, and cowbirds in general are believed to play a role in the decline of some migratory songbird populations. These brood parasites—birds that lay their eggs in the nests of others—have long flourished in North America. In this timely book, Catherine Ortega summarizes and synthesizes a wealth of information on cowbirds from around the world that has appeared since the publication of Herbert Friedmann's classic 1929 monograph on these birds. Most of this information has appeared in the last quarter-century and reflects advances in our understanding of how brood parasitism influences, and is influenced by, host species. Ortega shows that in order to manage cowbirds without further damaging delicate balances in host-parasite relationships, it is necessary to understand such factors as behavior, reproduction, population dynamics, and response to landscape patterns. She examines and explains the origin, evolution, and costs of brood parasitism, and she discusses the philosophical and ecological considerations regarding the management of cowbirds—a controversial issue because of their perceived influence on threatened and endangered birds. Because brood parasitism has evolved independently in various bird families, information on this adaptive strategy is of great ecological interest and considerable value to wildlife management. Cowbirds and Other Brood Parasites is an important reference on these creatures that enhances our understanding of both their behavior and their part in the natural world.

Book Host Relations of the Parasitic Cowbirds

Download or read book Host Relations of the Parasitic Cowbirds written by Herbert Friedmann and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowbirds are an ideal group in which to study the biology of brood parasitism; within the six included species there are displayed all stages of the development of this mode of reproduction ranging from that of the non-parasitic bay-wing through those of the completely parasitic screaming, shiny, brown-headed, bronzed, and giant cowbirds. The present report deals only with their host relationships, as this is the aspect of their biology in which our knowledge has shown the greatest increase since the author's discussion was published in 1929.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolutionary, ecological and behavioral questions posed by obligate brood parasites are among the most intriguing of all contemporary ornithological topics. Avian brood parasites lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and may be a major contributing factor driving several species of songbirds to near extinction. As one of the first books to present a comprehensive overview of this fascinating phenomenon, this work discusses the comparative biology and co-evolutionary adaptations exhibited by the five families of birds that engage in such behavior. Several chapters dealing with the comparative biology of both intraspecific and interspecific brood parasites, are followed by individual accounts of all known species--nearly 100 altogether, primarily cowbirds and cuckoos. Some of the more remarkable behavioral and structural adaptations of these birds include egg mimicry, juvenile mimicry, elimination by starvation or actual attack of other nestlings or host eggs, and even the learning and partial mimicry of host song traits. An extended glossary, a list of Latin names, 400 literature citations and range maps of all parasitic species discussed are also included. Detailed line drawings by the author enhance this synthesis of biological and ecological information.

Book Host Relations of the Parasitic Cowbirds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Host Relations of the Parasitic Cowbirds Classic Reprint written by Herbert Friedmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Host Relations of the Parasitic Cowbirds Inasmuch as the completeness of our knowledge varies with the different species of cowbirds, the detailed discussion of such biolog ical matters as host selection, the relative frequency with which different species of these hosts are utilized, the success rate with which these birds serve as fosterers, and the various reactions they give to the parasite and to the incidence of parasitism are all given in the account of each species of cowbird. As might be expected from the interest discussed above, the data are incomparably more extensive, and thus more amenable to analysis and interpretation, for the North American brown-headed cowbird than for any of the others. Because of this, the chief biological discussion and synthesis are given under that species, even though parts of the thoughts and conclusions are applicable to the others as well. The present study of the host-parasite relations of the cowbirds has been a long time in progress. Not only has a great mass of data been accumulating slowly over several decades, but newer insights and better methods of evaluating and interpreting the facts have been brought to bear as the material permitted. Much of the present data is due in large measure to the kind cooperation of many observ ers, collectors, and custodians of collections, all of whom have generously sent me numerous interesting records that otherwise would not have been available. Book Parasitic Birds and Their Hosts

Download or read book Parasitic Birds and Their Hosts written by Stephen I. Rothstein and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1998 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to present a comprehensive overview of parasitic birds and their hosts. Although the phenomenon has attracted the interest of naturalists and evolutionists since Darwin, only recently have researchers applied modern evolutionary theory and experimental methods to study the various adaptations related to brood parasitism. The work in this field is accelerating rapidly, and this volume collects work from the individuals and research groups around the world who have been responsible for nearly every major study in the last ten years. The papers present valuable summaries along with substantial new research, and the volume concludes with a review of important unsolved questions. The book is an invaluable resource on this fascinating topic, covering the remarkable sequences of adaptations and counter-adaptations, along with the perhaps even more remarkable cases where adaptations seem to be lacking.
