Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Entertaining and fascinating. The prose is crisp and engaging, the voice confident, and the plot skillfully imagined."" -- Readers' Favorite Book Review In this blockchain version of Gulliver's Travels, a businessman gets the offer of a lifetime from the tiny, island country of Consensusland, but the catch is troubling: give up everything he knows about business and finance on a leap of faith in cryptocurrency and the power of blockchain. Will he take that leap? Possibly the first fiction book about blockchain, Consensusland infuses a strong narrative with dramatic realism to show readers how the world changes when it uses cryptocurrency, not cash. ""This book answers, in a very clever and engaging way, the question of what a society running on the blockchain could look like. But really, it goes deeper than that, intertwining allegory to capture a lot of the current debate amidst the naysayers that are resistant to change."" -- Misha Yurchenko, author, ""Bullish on Bitcoin""

Book Cryptoeconomics

Download or read book Cryptoeconomics written by Jian Gong and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A systematic review of the structure and context of the blockchain-derived economic model... (the book) describes cryptoeconomics in connection with the game theory, behavioral economics and others in simple understandable language."—Wang Feng, founder of Linekong Interactive Group and Mars Finance, partner in Geekbang Venture Capital Blockchain technology has subverted existing perceptions and is the start of an economic revolution, called, cryptoeconomics. Blockchain is a key component of cryptoeconomics. Vlad Zamfir, a developer of Ethereum, defines this term as "a formal discipline that studies protocols that governs the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services in a decentralized digital economy. Cryptoeconomics is a practical science that focuses on the design and characterization of these protocols". This book explains the structures of blockchain-derived economic models, their history, and their application. It uses real-world cases to illustrate the relationship between cryptoeconomics and blockchain. Blockchain technology solves trust issues. A blockchain application can restrict behavior on the blockchain through a reward and punishment system that enables consensus in an innovative way. The greatest significance of cryptoeconomics lies in guaranteeing safety, stability, activity, and order in a decentralized consensus system. Security and stability are achieved mainly by cryptographical mechanisms. Activity and order are achieved through economic mechanisms. Cryptoeconomics and Blockchain: Ignighting a New Era of Blockchain discusses the most popular consensus algorithms and optimization mechanisms. With examples explained in clear and simple terms that are easy to understand, the book also explores economic mechanisms of blockchain such as game theory and behavioral economics.

Book excerpt: Depending on who you ask, bitcoin is rat poison, an interesting technology, or a world-altering wonder-currency that will lead a revolution in finance and alter our contemporary notions of privacy, wealth, governance, and security. Some say it will liberate the masses from financial oppression and deprivation. Others claim it's a ponzi scheme destined to destroy all who participate in it. Wall Street does not seem to care. It's happy to make money from those who want to buy it and those who want to bet against it. Does this mark the beginning of a shift of cryptocurrency away from bootstrapping developers and diehard believers towards professional money-makers? Will traditional finance rekindle the speculative frenzy that blasted cryptocurrency into mainstream discourse? How will cryptocurrency change Wall Street? More importantly, how will Wall Street change cryptocurrency?

Book Enlightened Capitalism

Download or read book Enlightened Capitalism written by Daniel Bright M.D. and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Spending is not the depletion of wealth, it is the transfer of ownership of money. And that transfer of ownership of money activates the economic activity that creates and maintains wealth.”……….. The classic work on Macroeconomics by John Maynard Keynes called “The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money” is notoriously difficult to read. It was my initial goal to attempt to read and fully understand Keynes’ work and then to produce a study guide of sorts, in order to make his concepts more accessible. This attempt turned into a major project that took years to accomplish. I believe the result of that effort, this book, captures the essence of the most important concepts Keynes discovered. However, in the process I discovered that, in order to properly understand those concepts, new definitions for currently used terms and new ways of organizing macroeconomic models are necessary. One might think that attempts to do so would just make everything more complicated and difficult to understand, but the opposite is true. The way of organizing and explaining the concepts shown in this book leads to the development of a comprehensive and fully consistent model of macroeconomics, a model that is actually easier to understand. I hope you will agree.

Book The New Financial Order

Download or read book The New Financial Order written by Robert J. Shiller and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his best-selling Irrational Exuberance, Robert Shiller cautioned that society's obsession with the stock market was fueling the volatility that has since made a roller coaster of the financial system. Less noted was Shiller's admonition that our infatuation with the stock market distracts us from more durable economic prospects. These lie in the hidden potential of real assets, such as income from our livelihoods and homes. But these ''ordinary riches,'' so fundamental to our well-being, are increasingly exposed to the pervasive risks of a rapidly changing global economy. This compelling and important new book presents a fresh vision for hedging risk and securing our economic future. Shiller describes six fundamental ideas for using modern information technology and advanced financial theory to temper basic risks that have been ignored by risk management institutions--risks to the value of our jobs and our homes, to the vitality of our communities, and to the very stability of national economies. Informed by a comprehensive risk information database, this new financial order would include global markets for trading risks and exploiting myriad new financial opportunities, from inequality insurance to intergenerational social security. Just as developments in insuring risks to life, health, and catastrophe have given us a quality of life unimaginable a century ago, so Shiller's plan for securing crucial assets promises to substantially enrich our condition. Once again providing an enormous service, Shiller gives us a powerful means to convert our ordinary riches into a level of economic security, equity, and growth never before seen. And once again, what Robert Shiller says should be read and heeded by anyone with a stake in the economy.

Book excerpt: In this luminous portrait of Paris, the celebrated historian gives us the history, culture, disasters, and triumphs of one of the world’s truly great cities. While Paris may be many things, it is never boring. From the rise of Philippe Auguste through the reigns of Henry IV and Louis XIV (who abandoned Paris for Versailles); Napoleon’s rise and fall; Baron Haussmann’s rebuilding of Paris (at the cost of much of the medieval city); the Belle Epoque and the Great War that brought it to an end; the Nazi Occupation, the Liberation, and the postwar period dominated by de Gaulle--Horne brings the city’s highs and lows, savagery and sophistication, and heroes and villains splendidly to life. With a keen eye for the telling anecdote and pivotal moment, he portrays an array of vivid incidents to show us how Paris endures through each age, is altered but always emerges more brilliant and beautiful than ever. The Seven Ages of Paris is a great historian’s tribute to a city he loves and has spent a lifetime learning to know. "Knowledgeable and colorful, written with gusto and love.... [An] ambitious and skillful narrative that covers the history of Paris with considerable brio and fervor." —LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK REVIEW

Book Louis XIV

Download or read book Louis XIV written by Olivier Bernier and published by New Word City. This book was released on 2018-02-17 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis XIV - the Sun King or Louis the Great, as he was also known - ruled France with an iron fist for over half a century, from 1651 to his death in 1715, outliving his son and even his grandson. His court at the Palace of Versailles became the most dazzling on the Continent, and through his intelligence and cunning, he made France the leading power of Europe. Now, in this masterful biography, historian Olivier Bernier brilliantly recreates Louis XIV's world to reveal the secrets of this monarch's unequaled sovereignty and to explore the singular mystique that surrounds him today. Not only was Louis heir to his father's throne, he felt he was divinely chosen to rule France. From the year he became king at the age of thirteen, he oversaw every aspect of government, from waging war and making political appointments to supervising the building of his many palaces. Along with political treachery that marked Louis XIV's long reign, Bernier also brings to light the personal scandals. We witness the poignant resignation of Louis XIV's queen to her husband's parade of mistresses and illegitimate children, the infamous intrigue when the king's brother was accused of poisoning his wife in a jealous rage, and the momentous building of Versailles, not an act of monstrous self-indulgence that bankrupted the nation but the visible expression of Louis XIV's new monarchy - his ingenious methods of centering all activity around court life, thus preventing his courtiers from fomenting rebellion. Under the Sun King, architecture, painting, music, and theater flourished, making France not only a great political force but a paradigm of fashion and culture as well. Louis XIV takes us from the grandeur of Versailles to the battlefields of the countryside, from the bedrooms of the king's mistresses to the chambers of his ministers, and presents an engrossing portrait of royal life and a commanding leader.

Book A Manual for Creating Atheists

Download or read book A Manual for Creating Atheists written by Peter Boghossian and published by Pitchstone Publishing (US&CA). This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, the faithful have honed proselytizing strategies and talked people into believing the truth of one holy book or another. Indeed, the faithful often view converting others as an obligation of their faith—and are trained from an early age to spread their unique brand of religion. The result is a world broken in large part by unquestioned faith. As an urgently needed counter to this tried-and-true tradition of religious evangelism, A Manual for Creating Atheists offers the first-ever guide not for talking people into faith—but for talking them out of it. Peter Boghossian draws on the tools he has developed and used for more than 20 years as a philosopher and educator to teach how to engage the faithful in conversations that will help them value reason and rationality, cast doubt on their religious beliefs, mistrust their faith, abandon superstition and irrationality, and ultimately embrace reason.

Book Colonial Urban Development

Download or read book Colonial Urban Development written by Anthony D. King and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Study focuses on the social and, more especially, the cultural processes governing colonial urban development and develops a theory and methodology to do this. The author demonstrates how the physical and spatial arrangements characterizing urban development are unique products of a particular society, to be understood only in terms of its values, behaviour and institutions and the distribution of social and political power within it. Nowhere is this more apparent than in 'colonial cities' of Asia and Africa where the environmental assumptions of a dominant, industrializing Western power were introduced to largely 'pre-industrial' societies. Anthony King draws his material primarily from these areas, and includes a case study of the development of colonial Delhi from the early nineteenth century to 1947. Yet, as the author explains, the problems of how cultural social and political factors influence the nature of environments and how these in turn affect social processes and behaviour, are of global significance. This book was first published in 1976.
