Este libro expone los caminos en que las parejas suelen naufragar en la travesía del divorcio. Presenta una terapia para asistir a las familias basada en la convicción de que los padres pueden proteger a sus hijos y negociar entre sí pragmáticamente a pesar del trauma que afrontan. Su objetivo es que continúen responsabilizándose por sus hijos. Para ello se ayuda a los miembros de la pareja a mejorar su relación como cónyuges. El terapeuta ayuda a revertir los procesos de abdicación de la responsabilidad parental, que suelen percibirse en las familias en vías de separación que incluyen a adolescentes con problemas. Trata de prevenir las reacciones adversas que se observan en estos, como fracaso escolar, abuso de drogas, ideas suicidas, embarazo y aborto.
