For these problems to be resolved, it is pertinent that the study of various religions be taken seriously. This study should be aiming at better understanding, co-existence, respect for one another and frequent inter-religious dialogues among the various religions of the world. When this is achieved, the believers of various religions would realize that many are worshipping one God and their desire is to communicate with Him, although they may approach Him differently.

CHAJA in Igbo Traditional Religion: A comparative study with SACRIFICE in Judaism, Hinduism and Christianity is a sincere, direct and pointed African perspective; presenting the nature of sacrifice in the religion without prejudice. It challenges earlier works on this subject matter especially Sacrifice in Ibo Religion (1970) by Francis Arinze. The book builds the nature of sacrifice in Igbo Traditional Religion (ITR) on the theory of Do ut Des and postulates immolation as the distinctive character of sacrifice in the religion. The innovation in the areas of the object of the religion as Mm and the divisions of Ichaja as Ajanchnye and Ajanchp paves a way for a veritable monotheism opposed the polytheism that has always been proposed by writers. This object of ITR is Mm - a multi-partite being. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ...the present book on Sacrifice in Igbo Taditional Religion (ITR), aptly titled "chaja" by the witer finds its rightful place. With what looks like a heart-warming academic throb, the author of this book revisited the usual claims of previous scholars on Sacrifice in ITR. Dissatisfied with the nomenclature 'Aja' in transliterating the English Sacrifice for what he regarded as the heart of ITR, he swiftly moved towards a reconstruction with the Igbo word 'chaja' as a strong hinge. As he succinctly quipped in the introductory section (2008: ): The aim of this work is to re-assess the etymological formulation of Ichuaja by evaluating its status among all other ritual elements and exploring what constitutes it as a practical action in ITR.... To achieve the above gigantic task, the author made use of what is often regarded as polymorphic method or interdisciplinary method with anthropo-religious, comparative, historico-philological and theological approaches in forefront. Finally, with further analysis of the various nuances of 'chaja', he landed on curious conclusions which readers will find fascinating and provocative. Thus he conclusively snipped with academic assurance (2008: ): ...we believe that the whole idea of sacrifice in ITR has been radicalized and made more profound and meaningful. Before this work, Ichuaja has been viewed from a negative perspective; the work has opened further vistas to the understanding of what the votaries of ITR do in a more positive light.... Even if readers of the contents of this work disagree on some issues raised by its author, they cannot but appreciate the courage and innovative trends of the writer. Like a good architect, he pulls down the old edifice of this practical element of ITR only to build with alacrity what looked like a lost ground. Therein is the genius of this work. While passing kudos on the efforts of the author, I warmly recommend the work to all especially genuine readers of ATR/ITR. Rev. Fr. Prof. A. This book presents a contextual model of local theology that begins its reflection with the Igbo cultural context. The Igbo or Nigerian or African Church can have a pattern of ministry with a model and a method that are consistent with the peoples' values. To accomplish this goal a local cultural value must be explored and brought into the scene. Since the Igbo society is the heart of Christianity and Catholicism in Africa, the author relies on Igboland as his situational context. The exploration of the indigenous Igbo value of collaboration will be an advantage in ministering to the rest of the African people who have cultural resemblances to Igbos. The African Church has to learn from the Igbo values of umunna bu ike. Umunna is the basic Igbo unit, and possibly the most powerful missionary force in Igboland, and potentially an Igbo gift to the Church in Nigeria and Africa, and even beyond.

Book excerpt: The problems arising from the separate celebrations of traditional marriage and church wedding in the Igbo Church of Nigeria are the main objectives of the proposed Rite. The Igbo Christian man and woman require the traditional marriage and the church wedding to be considered as husband and wife. The important fact is that marriage for the Igbo people, even for some Christians among them, is the traditional marriage. In such traditional marriages today, experience shows that in addition to Christians and Non-christians, the clergy are very often present not only to grace the occasion by their presence, but also to say the opening prayer, prayer over the kola nuts, and sometimes also the closing prayer, and give the blessing. The obvious questions arising from these separate celebrations call for attention and review in the light of the on-going liturgical inculturation and the provisions made by the reformed liturgy of the Second Vatican Council. Is it then possible to evolve a unique Rite whereby the two celebrations can be validly and lawfully celebrated in one ceremony? Such a Rite would be required not only to be fully cultural and truly Christian but above all acceptable by both the culture and the church. The Igbo Christian Rite of Marriage is, therefore, a concrete proposal.
