Book Chastity Poverty and Obedience

Download or read book Chastity Poverty and Obedience written by Mary Francis and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-05-26 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many topics addressed by the Second Vatican Council was the need for the renewal of religious life. Some forty years later, many religious orders of women are dying out, begging the question: Did the reforms of Vatican II help the religious orders become more fruitful, or did they plant the seeds of destruction? In writing this work, Mother Mary Francis, P.C.C., carefully and prayerfully examined the decree on religious life promulgated by the Council Fathers and uncovered its noble meaning and purpose. With her penetrating eye and thoughtful reflection, Mother goes to the heart of the document, Perfectae Caritatis, and finds there the calling to pursue perfect love though chastity, poverty and obedience that Christ himself extends to those disciples who would follow him more closely. This book is a timely volume on this important topic for religious life in the Church. For Catholics who want to discover how the religious life can be restored, this is a fine place to start.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2015 has been ; deemed the Year of the Consecrated Life by Pope Francis, ; this work by Cardinal Arinze is a very timely one-for this ; year, and for any time. A reflection on the consecrated ; life, Radical Discipleship represents a beautiful ; way for faithful Catholics to participate in this ; Church-wide theme and celebration by coming to a deeper ; understanding of the consecrated life. Radical ; Discipleship illuminates the vocation of the ; consecrated state and its presence in the Body of Christ, ; beginning with a brief look at its origins in Scripture and ; the early Church. The work then reflects upon the ; following: The different forms this radical ; life takes The population of consecrated persons ; in the Church today The recognition that the ; consecrated life has received from the Church The ; vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience taken by all ; consecrated persons Community life as it pertains ; to consecrated life The prophetic aspect of the ; consecrated life The impact of the consecrated ; state on the Church community and on ; society Alongside these fascinating topics, ; Cardinal Arinze addresses some of the problems faced by ; consecrated people, and how these difficulties have led ; some to abandon this vocation. In examining the struggles ; specific to the consecrated state, the Cardinal seeks to ; encourage other consecrated persons to persevere in their ; vocation. He further calls the entire Church to support the ; consecrated life and those who have dedicated themselves to ; Christ in this way. Although filled with substantive ; information, even the most involved sections are presented ; in an engaging, readable and reflective style. The book is ; not, as the Cardinal explains, "a dissertation based on ; deep research on the theology and canon law on the ; consecrated life". Radical Discipleship is ; rather a reflection, written for consecrated people, other ; laity and clergy alike, and offers wonderful material for ; thought and prayer. It is Cardinal Arinze's hope that his ; work will make the consecrated life "better understood, ; loved, lived and promoted".

  • Author : Kent Lasnoski

Download or read book Vocation to Virtue written by Kent Lasnoski and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-08-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocation to Virtue seeks to answer a perennial difficulty in the Catholic theology of marriage: how do the practice and bond of marriage lead to Christian perfection in spouses and their children? If the Second Vatican Council is correct in saying that all in the church are called to Christian perfection, we need an account of how those consecrated in the sacrament of marriage can fulfill that vocation. If the perfection of charity consists in Christ himself, then couples must imitate Christ. But how? If Christ is the poor, chaste, and obedient bridegroom of the church, then spouses achieve holiness inasmuch as they participate in Christ's own virtues: poverty, chastity, and obedience. The thesis is that the language of the evangelical virtues (poverty, chastity, and obedience), a rule of life, and robust preparation (maybe a novitiate) belongs as properly to marriage as to consecrated religious life. Both states are specifications of a common baptismal consecration to Christ himself. Lasnoski seeks to establish this fact and constructively apply this language to conjugal life. The book begins by explaining our marriage crisis and theological paradigms for speaking about Christian marriage as "relationship" or as "practice," and considers modern scholarly attempts to relate conjugal life and consecrated religious life. The book then offers a theological groundwork in Christ and the Trinity for a deeper, noncompetitive relationship between the consecrated religious life and married life. It offers an Augustinian account of the relationship between marriage and consecrated life, and develops the ecclesial connection between the states with recourse to John's Gospel, which sees Christian life in terms of "householding." The church's tradition has a dialogical relationship between the consecrated and married - a mutual sharing of both "monastic" and "domestic" language. The final chapter develops practices of Christian householding for conjugal life using the language of poverty, chastity, and obedience, a rule of life, and a kind of novitiate preparation.

This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the meditations for a retreat for the renewal of vows of the consecrated lay women of the Apostles of the Interior Life, given from May 28 to June 1, 2018. The theme was "the mystery of evangelical love" or the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. In these reflections, I tried to gaze upon the foundational realities of our existence-especially the truth of our belovedness in the arms of our heavenly Father-within which alone all the other elements of our life find their meaning and their place. It is my hope that what I have said may prove helpful to persons in every state of life, whether religious, priest, single, or married, opening the way to a deeper restfulness in God and a greater freedom and playfulness within his tender care.

Book Christian Totality

Download or read book Christian Totality written by Basil Cole and published by Saint Pauls/Alba House. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and scholarly treatise on Christian living. After highlighting the dignity of lay Christian life and its mission to transform the world, it contrasts the lay and consecrated vocations and then proceeds to explore the splendid love and mystery of the consecrated life from the Scriptural, historical, conciliar and theological perspectives. It deals at length with the three evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience which are the principal elements of the religious life, with the common life and apostolic work of consecrated men and women. It also addresses the mutual influence of consecrated life and ministerial priesthood in the lives of religious who are ordained. Besides tracing the origin and development of the three evangelical counsels, the books presents a lucid and balanced exposition of the real meaning and essential features of the allied virtues and suggests practical ways and means of avoiding pitfalls and of growing in each virtue. Of special interest is the sensitive treatment of delicate issues like friendship with the same or opposite sex among consecrated persons.

Book Consecrated life as self donation to God and to his cause

Download or read book Consecrated life as self donation to God and to his cause written by Paramavalan Elanko Peter (Father, CMF) and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is entitled: "Consecrated Life as Self-donation to God and to His cause." Thus, this study is descriptive. God of love and lover of life called the consecrated persons and offer them the necessary grace to respond to His divine initiative in profound freedom and self-surrender. The Church herself, in virtue of her God-given authority, receives the evangelical counsels of Chastity, Poverty and Obedience as loving gift of the Trinity to the consecrated persons who profess this form of life. The consecrated life is self-donation to God and to his kingdom. This dynamic process of self-donation to God is a permanent and lifelong loving gift of oneself to God in faith and inner joy. This state of life strengthens the bond between the consecrated person and Triune God, in the person of Jesus Christ. This bound of divine communion motivates the consecrated person to find his/her personality, identity and mission in Jesus. This study has been done in order to understand to deeper meaning of consecrated life in self-donation to God. This life self-donation is being experienced in living the evangelical counsels in communion and fraternal love in the model of Christ's self-emptying.

Book Understanding the Consecrated Life in Canada

Download or read book Understanding the Consecrated Life in Canada written by Jason Zuidema and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the consecrated life in Canada since the 1960s should be about much more than numerical decline. Although the falling numbers are significant among Catholic religious in communities that pre-date Vatican II, many communities continue to show stability and even growth. This book provides nuance to that story by adding detailed portraits of movements, communities and institutions. In four parts, this book presents essays from the leading scholars on religious life in Canada that seek to address the state of religious communities dedicated to religious virtuosity normally characterized by formal promises of chastity, poverty, and obedience. The essays examine a broad range of topics related to the general state of consecrated (or “religious” or “monastic”) life in contemporary Canadian Christian and Buddhist traditions. In the first section, the contributors trace the demographics and definitions of religious life in Canada. The second section examines Canadian developments in Catholic religious life during the Vatican II and the post-Vatican II eras. A third section explores trends in contemporary Canadian religious life, while the fourth section describes the consecrated life in other Canadian religious traditions.
