Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding the manpower to defend democracy has been a recurring problem. Russell Weigley writes: The historic preoccupation of the Army's thought in peacetime has been the manpower question: how, in an unmilitary nation, to muster adequate numbers of capable soldiers quickly should war occur. When the nature of modern warfare made an all-volunteer army inadequate, the major Western democracies confronted the dilemma of involuntary military service in a free society. The core of this manuscript concerns methods by which France, Great Britain, and the United States solved the problem and why some solutions were more lasting and effective than others. Flynn challenges conventional wisdom that suggests that conscription was inefficient and that it promoted inequality of sacrifice. Sharing similar but not identical diplomatic outlooks, the three countries discussed here were allies in world wars and in the Cold War, and they also confronted the problem of using conscripts to defend colonial interests in an age of decolonization. These societies rest upon democratic principles, and operating a draft in a democracy raises several unique problems. A particular tension develops as a result of adopting forced military service in a polity based on concepts of individual rights and freedoms. Despite the protest and inconsistencies, the criticism and waste, Flynn reveals that conscription served the three Western democracies well in an historical context, proving effective in gathering fighting men and allowing a flexibility to cope and change as problems arose.

Book The Campus and a Nation in Crisis

Download or read book The Campus and a Nation in Crisis written by Willis Rudy and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how colleges and universities have played a vital role during times of great crisis in American history, responding actively and helpfully to all the major challenges confronting their country. The colleges of the land became politicized repeatedly by such momentous developments as the American Revolution, the Civil War between the North and the South, the two vast global conflicts of the twentieth century, and America's controversial involvement in Southeast Asia. Campus life became intensely fractious during these difficult and turbulent periods. Violence sometimes accompanied the campus activism. While there were significant differences in the response of groups on the campuses - students and professors reacted differently, for example - to the crises of earlier times as compared to those in more recent years, there is an element of continuity. That thread of continuity from the Revolutionary era to Vietnam was the fact that time after time, the members of the academic communities sought to resolve the nation's crises constructively. They rallied to the cause of colonial rights and, ultimately, political independence. They supported the aims of their embattled sections, North and South. They sought to influence their nation's responses to the global crises of the twentieth century. And they campaigned to extricate the nation from an increasingly costly military entanglement in Southeast Asia. In all five of these tests of national purpose, the colleges and universities, while not the ultimate decision makers, helped shape the eventual patterns of America's response in an important way.

Book excerpt: Places Greenville's experience during World War I within the context of the progressive era to better understand the rise of this New South city Greenville, South Carolina has become an attractive destination, frequently included in lists of the "Best Small Cities" in America. While Greenville's twenty-first-century Renaissance has been impressive, in "Our Country First, Then Greenville," Courtney L. Tollison Hartness explores an earlier period, revealing how Greenville's experience during World War I served to generate massive development in the city and the region. It was this moment that catalyzed Greenville's development into a modern city, setting the stage for the continued growth that persists into the present-day. "Our Country First, Then Greenville" explores Greenville's home-front experience of race relations, dramatic population growth (the number of Greenville residents nearly tripled between 1900 and 1930s), the women's suffrage movement, and the contributions of African Americans and women to Greenville's history. This important work features photos of Greenville, found in archival collections throughout the country and dating back over one hundred years.
