Book Let s Call it What it is A Matter of Conscience

Download or read book Let s Call it What it is A Matter of Conscience written by Beryl W. Holtam and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-23 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a new century, there has emerged a new age in moral considerations. The Arab Spring, Facebook, and the Occupy Movement all point to an awareness of, and concern for, the moral character of the individual and the collective. The phrase, “it’s the right thing to do”, echoing throughout news media and one’s daily exchanges, typically indicates a moral positioning. Presented in this book is the argument that now is the time to call it what it is, a matter of conscience, and to embrace the transformative power of a new vocabulary for moral and character education. In a more expansive approach than typically seen, this book examines the nature and function of conscience. Building upon the foundational work of Thomas Green (1999), the vocabulary of reflexive judgment, reflexive emotions, normation, and voices of conscience, are explored as they apply to moral formation, with examples and applications provided. Specific attention is given to the interrelationship of the collective conscience with democracy. Educating for conscience and the notion of the sacred are also examined. Written from an educator’s perspective, this book offers a framework for moral education to both the secular and religious domains.

  • Author : Hendrik Stoker
  • Publisher : University of Notre Dame Pess
  • Release : 2018-03-30
  • ISBN : 0268103208
  • Pages : 468 pages

Download or read book Conscience written by Hendrik Stoker and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conscience: Phenomena and Theories was first published in German in 1925 as a dissertation by Hendrik G. Stoker under the title Das Gewissen: Erscheinungsformen und Theorien. It was received with acclaim by philosophers at the time, including Stoker’s dissertation mentor Max Scheler, Martin Heidegger, and Herbert Spielberg, as quite possibly the single most comprehensive philosophical treatment of conscience and as a major contribution in the phenomenological tradition. Stoker’s study offers a detailed historical survey of the concept of conscience from ancient times through the Middle Ages up to more modern thinkers, including Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Freud, and Cardinal Newman. Stoker analyzes not only the concept of conscience in academic theory but also various types of theories of conscience. His work offers insightful discussions of problems and theories related to the genesis, reliability, and validity of conscience. In particular, Stoker analyzes the moral, spiritual, and psychological phenomena connected with bad conscience, which in turn illuminate the concept of conscience. The book is deeply informed by the traditions of western Christianity. Available for the first time in an accessible English translation, with an introduction by its translator and editor, Philip E. Blosser, it promises to be of interest to philosophers, especially in Christian philosophy and phenomenology, and also to all those interested in moral and religious psychology, ethics, religion, and theology.

  • Author : Andrew R. Murphy

Download or read book Conscience and Community written by Andrew R. Murphy and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious toleration appears near the top of any short list of core liberal democratic values. Theorists from John Locke to John Rawls emphasize important interconnections between the principles of toleration, constitutional government, and the rule of law. Conscience and Community revisits the historical emergence of religious liberty in the Anglo-American tradition, looking deeper than the traditional emergence of toleration to find not a series of self-evident or logically connected expansions but instead a far more complex evolution. Murphy argues that contemporary liberal theorists have misunderstood and misconstrued the actual historical development of toleration in theory and practice. Murphy approaches the concept through three "myths" about religious toleration: that it was opposed only by ignorant, narrow-minded persecutors; that it was achieved by skeptical Enlightenment rationalists; and that tolerationist arguments generalize easily from religion to issues such as gender, race, ethnicity, and sexuality, providing a basis for identity politics.

Sin, disobedience, hardening of heart and impurity destroy the good conscience and produce a defiled conscience. When the conscience is defiled, faith cannot be born. Lack of repentance, and a hardened heart produce a seared and dead conscience to the point where, when God speaks, you no longer feel anything. This book by Professor Fomum is a description of the state of man's conscience. His burden is to get every believer to cooperate with God to have a clear conscience before God and before man. A strong and clear conscience speaks of the possibility of letting in the light of God, for the strong conscience is full of the Holy Spirit. From a detailed explanation of each state of conscience, Professor Fomum demonstrates that the Lord has done everything possible to make sure that every believer has a conscience that is functioning at the highest possible level. His prayer is that everyone should step into the health of God for their conscience and become whatever God wants them to become in their relationship with Him. May you read this book in order to accomplish all that He has asked you to do for His everlasting purposes.
