Book excerpt: The free exercise of conscience is under threat in the United States. Already the conservative bloc of the Supreme Court is reversing the progress of religious liberty that had been steadily advancing. And this danger will only increase if more conservative judges are nominated to the court. This is the impassioned argument of Religion on Trial. Against Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Chief Justice Rehnquist, the authors argue that what the First Amendment protects is the freedom of individual conviction, not the rights of sectarian majorities to inflict their values on others. Beginning with an analysis of the origins of the Constitution and then following the history of significant church-state issues, Religion on Trial shows that the trajectory of American history has been toward greater freedoms for more Americans: freedom of religion moving gradually toward freedom of conscience regardless of religion. But in the last quarter-century, conservatives have gained political power and they are now attempting to limit the ability of the Court to protect the rights of individual conscience. Writing not just as scholars, but as advocates of church-state separation, Hammond, Machacek, and Mazur make the strong case that every American needs to pay attention to what is happening on the Surpeme Court or risk losing the liberties of conscience and religion that have been gained so far.

Book Sentiments of an American Conscience

Download or read book Sentiments of an American Conscience written by Chris Arney and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how we feel, how we understand, how we relate, and what we can do to improve ourselves. While all of us have a conscience, our consciences are not all-knowing nor always correct. However, our consciences help us sort out our values and philosophy, ethics and virtue, rights and responsibilities, and politics and relationships. Sentiments of an American Conscience: Showing society through many perspectives by Chris Arney provides ideas and reminders of the important elements of life in the forms of passages, snippets, quotes, and reflections. The book's topics range from liberty, equality, fairness, freedom, and democracy to technology, science, and mathematics and many subjects in between. Our world is in transition from its past focus on industrialization to a new emphasis on information. The central premise of the book is that as a nation in transition the US has become less capable in some ways and more competitive and greedy. Because of that, we need reminders on how we think and act to regain our competence and confidence with sufficient virtue and morality to take care of US citizens and to garner the cooperation and support from other countries in the world. The book's version of conscience considers formal institutions such as the military and education systems in the US along with American fascinations such as football, sports, religion, and politics. The reader will find an assortment of notions that at times confronts and embraces modern issues such as complexity, flatness, artificial intelligence, robots, networks, international relations, decision-making, and problem-solving. The book's conscience also reminds the reader of foundational issues and values embedded in the humanism of US democracy like freedom, liberty, equality, altruism, morality, diversity, tolerance, and other basic principles within American culture and society. As is the case with consciences, some ideas are farfetched, and others are more mundane and obvious. The sentiments and opinions are presented to make us think and reflect on ourselves and our country. Given the author's experiences in the military and teaching at the United States Military Academy, these topics are ones that capture the sentiments of the conscience and are used as examples of American culture, government, and organization. The author's perspectives as a mathematician and interdisciplinary scientist also affect the presentation, which is sometimes empirical and sometimes emotional. The author sees American democracy in need of modernization and human society in need of more cooperation and toleration As a former teacher of cadets who have opportunities to change and hopefully improve the world, Chris Arney is both idealistic and optimistic about the future trajectory of the United States and the world. Chris sees himself as a member of the once hopeful and now disappointing Woodstock Generation. He and the conscience reflect on the lost opportunities of his Baby Boomer generation and put their faith in the Millennials for the revitalization of the Woodstock spirit. The one American pastime that is a prime target of the conscience's wrath is big-time college football. The conscience warns of football's dangers and reveals the misguided emphasis of American education institutions on football's role in the educational demise of American students.

Book The Conscience of the State in North America

Download or read book The Conscience of the State in North America written by E. R. Norman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book strongly challenges the commonly held view that Great Britain, Canada and the United States are dissimilate in one important aspect of their histories - the relations between Church and state, between religious opinion and public life. In this comparative study, Dr Norman traces the movements towards the formal separation of Church and state since the mid-eighteenth century. He demonstrates that the redefinition of their mutual relationships has followed an essentially similar, though independent and chronologically uneven, course in all three countries. Viewed from the perspectives of British experience, North American problems and their solutions are shown to conform to a recognisably similar pattern. Dr Norman outlines the common elements making for change: the combined forces of religious pluralism which undermined the strength of the established Churches, allied with radical politicians who demanded the end of state protection of religious institutions in the name of political justice.

Book The Conscience of a Conservative

Download or read book The Conscience of a Conservative written by Barry M. Goldwater and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-23 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1960, Barry Goldwater set forth his brief manifesto in The Conscience of a Conservative. Written at the height of the Cold War and in the wake of America's greatest experiment with big government, the New Deal, Goldwater's message was not only remarkable, but radical. He argued for the value and importance of conservative principles--freedom, foremost among them--in contemporary political life. Using the principles he espoused in this concise but powerful book, Goldwater fundamentally altered the political landscape of his day--and ours.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Common Conscience: Addresses Delivered in America During the Great War In the first of the following addresses I have explained the origins of the mission on which they were delivered. That mission was begun in New York on the 2nd of April, 1918, and with two brief intervals was continued daily till the middle of July, after which I had a few further engagements before my return from America in the end of August. The programme of the necessary tours was drawn up by the executive of the National Committee (of the United States) on the Churches and Moral Aims of the War - of which Mr. Holt is chairman, and ex-President Taft, the Hon. Alton B. Parker, and other representative Americans are members, and by their secretary, Mr. Henry A. Atkinson, to whom, with his assistant, Mr. L. Gordon, and Dr. Frederick Lynch of the "League to Enforce Peace" by winning the war, I have many reasons to be very grateful. Book Diversity Conformity and Conscience in Contemporary America

Download or read book Diversity Conformity and Conscience in Contemporary America written by Bradley C. S. Watson and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is a nation that celebrates diversity and freedom of conscience. Yet, as Alexis de Tocqueville observed, democratic times often demand conformity. Nowadays, conformity might be enforced in the name of diversity itself, and go so far as to infringe on the rights of conscience, expression, association, and religious freedom. Americans have recently been confronted by this paradox in various ways, from federal health care mandates, to campus speech codes, to consumer boycotts, to public intimidation, to vexatious litigation, to private corporations dismissing employees for expressing certain political views. In this book, Bradley C. S. Watson brings together leading thinkers from a variety of disciplines to examine the manner and extent to which conformity is demanded by contemporary American law and social practice. Contributors also consider the long-term results of such demands for conformity for the health—and even survival—of a constitutional republic.
