Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating the fortieth anniversary of this seminal book, this new edition includes an illuminating foreword by Carlos Eire and Ronald K. Rittges The seeds of the swift and sweeping religious movement that reshaped European thought in the 1500s were sown in the late Middle Ages. In this book, Steven Ozment traces the growth and dissemination of dissenting intellectual trends through three centuries to their explosive burgeoning in the Reformations—both Protestant and Catholic—of the sixteenth century. He elucidates with great clarity the complex philosophical and theological issues that inspired antagonistic schools, traditions, and movements from Aquinas to Calvin. This masterly synthesis of the intellectual and religious history of the period illuminates the impact of late medieval ideas on early modern society. With a new foreword by Carlos Eire and Ronald K. Rittgers, this modern classic is ripe for rediscovery by a new generation of students and scholars.

Download or read book Brothers in Christ written by Fritz Blanke and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-07-07 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Brothers In Christ', a reprint of a ground breaking study by Swiss church historian Fritz Blanke, details the origins of the Anabaptist movement in the little town of Zollikon, near Zurich. The author retraces the development of this fascinating revival, retelling the stories of this movement of dedicated believers - men and women who yearned to live as disciples of Christ in their personal lives and churches. Because of their custom to re-baptize adult converts, they were called Anabaptists. They were a vanguard of the priesthood of all believers, of religious freedom, and of independent church-planting. The men who sparked the Zollikon revival movement - Konrad Grebel, Felix Manz, Johannes Brotli, Jorg Blaurock, and their friends - faced persecution, exile, and even death. This book paints a vivid portrait of the controversies and friction that accompany spiritual awakenings in churches to this day. What stands out in Fritz Blanke's work is the sensitive and appreciative way in which he depicts the revival among the Lake Zurich vinedressers, balanced with a profound, background knowledge of Zwingli's work and spirit. The events that took place in Zurich 500 years ago are still very much relevant today. It is time to take steps towards reconciliation and to rediscover the Anabaptist heritage: their courage and their uncompromising devotion to Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Guenther family appears to have originated in Switzerland. Eventually members of the family became Mennonites and moved to the Ukraine where a number of Germans were settling. One of the Guenthers to move there was Franz Günther (1827-1900) who married Maria Warkentin and was the father of six children. In 1878 Franz, Maria and four of their children immigrated to America. They settled in South Dakota where one of the children, Cornelius F. Guenther (185301934) married Eva Dürksen and was the father of fourteen children. Their many descendants live throughout the United States.

Book Americans Knocking at Freedom S Door

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans pursue life and liberty through their religious freedom, economic well-being, and self-governance that includes a basic understanding of the constitutional principles provided by our founding fathers. Hopefully, our pursuit of life and liberty also includes a curiosity to explore our rich and diverse history. Americans Knocking at Freedoms Door is a uniquely American heritage of religious freedoms and government of and by the people. The author, Bernie Lee Yoder Smith-DeBoe, presents a conversational discussion and a historical exploration of our Christian roots. This book begins with Noahs ark and continues with the ancient tribes, the Middle Ages, religious wars, American DNA, and why the early settlers came to America. Our knowledge of American history generally includes our founding fathers, the Civil War, and more contemporary wars; however, this tells us very little about our early settlers, their challenges, and their background as people of religious faith. This book offers some historical background and stories about those who established and helped the United States to grow and flourish. It reminds us that we are Americans. We stand together as Americans, and we need to come together as Americans.
