Book French Blockbusters

  • Author : Michael Charlie Michael
  • Publisher : Edinburgh University Press

Download or read book French Blockbusters written by Michael Charlie Michael and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The digitised spectacles conjured by a word like 'blockbuster' may create a certain cognitive dissonance with received ideas about French cinema - long celebrated as a model for philosophical, economic and aesthetic resistance to globalised popular culture. While the Gallic 'cultural exception' remains a forceful current to this day, this book shows how the onslaught of Hollywood mega-franchises and new media platforms since the 1980s has also provoked an overtly commercialised response from French producers eager to redefine the stakes and scope of their own traditions. From English-language action vehicles like Valrian and the City of a Thousand Planets (Besson, 2017) to revisionist historical films like Of Gods and Men (Beauvois, 2011) and crowd-pleasing comedies like Intouchables (Toldano & Nakache, 2011), the variously filiated 'local blockbusters' from contemporary France brim with the seeds of cultural contradiction, but also with the energy of a forceful counter-history. Cutting across a swath of recent French-produced cinema, French Blockbusters offers the first book-length consideration of the theoretical implications, historical impact and cultural consequences of a recent grouping of popular films that are rapidly changing what it means to make - or to see - a 'French' film today.

Book Film Policy in a Globalised Cultural Economy

Download or read book Film Policy in a Globalised Cultural Economy written by John Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past two decades have witnessed major changes in film industries worldwide in response to both economic globalisation and technological developments. The dominant position of Hollywood movies in the global film market has remained largely uncontested, but Hollywood itself has become increasingly international in its operations whilst ‘regional’ screen industries such as those in East Asia and in the Indian subcontinent have (re-)emerged and developed new forms of collaboration. The advent of digital technologies has also transformed the content of films and the ways in which they are made and consumed. Such changes, in turn, have posed new economic and cultural challenges for policy-makers around the world and led to a degree of rethinking of how film policy objectives are to be conceived, defined and implemented. This collection brings together a range of international scholars from the USA, Europe and Asia to consider how film policy has responded to the various economic, technological and political shifts shaping the global film industry; and to identify the many tensions between global and local, economic and cultural, and public and private policy objectives that have been the result of these changes. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Cultural Policy.

Book The Political Economy of Disney

Download or read book The Political Economy of Disney written by Alexandre Bohas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the socio-economic impact of multinational corporations. Combining Cultural Studies and International Political Economy, it provides a revealing analysis of the Walt Disney Company, and by extension the wider Hollywood studio system. It does so by examining the cultural and economic forces powering the industry's expansion, the 'civilisation' that Disney disseminates, and the various ways that societies beyond the USA have adopted facets of the Hollywood productions to which they are exposed. Identifying both the strengths and the weaknesses of these transnational firms, it demonstrates the significance of their contribution to American power and predominance.

Download or read book Exception Taken written by Jonathan Buchsbaum and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Exception Taken, Jonathan Buchsbaum examines the movements that have emerged in opposition to the homogenizing force of Hollywood in global filmmaking. While European cinema was entering a steady decline in the 1980s, France sought to strengthen support for its film industry under the new Mitterrand government. Over the following decades, the country lobbied partners in the European Economic Community to design strategies to protect the audiovisual industries and to resist cultural free-trade pressures in international trade agreements. These struggles to preserve the autonomy of national artistic prerogatives emboldened many countries to question the benefits of accelerated globalization. Led by the energetic minister of culture Jack Lang, France initiated a series of measures to support all sectors of the film industry. Lang introduced laws mandating that state and private television invest in the film industry, effectively replacing the revenue lost from a shrinking theatrical audience for French films. With the formation of the European Union in 1992, Europe passed a new treaty (Maastricht) that extended its legal purview to culture for the first time, setting up the dramatic confrontation over the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) in 1993. Pushed by France, the EU fought the United States over the idea that countries should preserve their right to regulate cultural activity as they saw fit. France and Canada then initiated a campaign to protect cultural diversity within UNESCO that led to the passage of the Convention on Cultural Diversity in 2005. As France pursued these efforts to protect cultural diversity beyond its borders, it also articulated "a certain idea of cinema" that did not simply defend a narrow vision of national cinema. France promoted both commercial cinema and art cinema, disproving announcements of the death of cinema.

NOUS NOUS PROPOSONS D'EXAMINER CETTE QUESTION A TRAVERS DEUX CHAMPS D'INVESTIGATION : CELUI DES BIENS COLLECTIFS ET CELUI DES BIENS DE TUTELLE. NOUS VERRONS ALORS QU'EN S'IMMISCANT DANS LA PRODUCTION DE LONGS METRAGES, LES POUVOIRS PUBLICS PEUVENT NON SEULEMENT CHERCHER A SUPPLEER UN MARCHE DEFICIENT, MAIS EGALEMENT A CORRIGER LES PREFERENCES INDIVIDUELLES, ESSENTIELLEMENT DANS UNE OPTIQUE CULTURELLE. LE PROBLEME DU SOUTIEN PUBLIC NE S'ARRETE TOUTEFOIS PAS A CES SEULS ARGUMENTS. L'ETAT INTERVIENT AUSSI PARCE QUE LE CINEMA EST EN CRISE. POUR MIEUX COMPRENDRE CET ETAT DE FAIT, HORMIS ETUDIER EN DETAIL LA FILIERE, ON PEUT SE REPORTER AUX ANALYSES METTANT EN RELATION LE PROGRES TECHNIQUE ET LES CYCLES LONGS. ON DECOUVRE ALORS QUE C'EST LA TELEVISION, NEE PENDANT LA LONGUE PHASE D DE L'ENTRE-DEUX-GUERRES ET ETENDUE A TOUTE LA SOCIETE PENDANT LA LONGUE PHASE A DE L'APRES-GUERRE, QUI A CONDUIT LE SEPTIEME ART A SES DIFFICULTES ACTUELLES. CEPENDANT, AVEC LES TECHNOLOGIES RECENTES, QUI CONTRIBUENT A LA MULTIPLICATION DES CANAUX DE DIFFUSION ET, CONSEQUEMMENT, GENERENT DES DEBOUCHES ET FINANCEMENTS NOUVEAUX, IL SEMBLERAIT QU'UN CHANGEMENT DE SITUATION SOIT ENVISAGEABLE. D'AILLEURS, CONSCIENTES DE L'IRREVERSIBILITE DES TRANSFORMATIONS EN COURS, LES ENTREPRISES CINEMATOGRAPHIQUES CHOISISSENT FREQUEMMENT DE TRAVAILLER EN COLLABORATION AVEC LES DIFFUSEURS. POUR LE MOMENT, IL EST NEANMOINS INDISPENSABLE DE RETABLIR LA COMPETITIVITE DE NOS LONGS METRAGES, MAIS AUSSI DE TOUTES NOS FICTIONS, SOUMIS A UNE CONCURRENCE INTERNATIONALE POUSSEE A SON PAROXYSME. INDISCUTABLEMENT, LE CINEMA EUROPEEN EST UN SECTEUR CULTUREL EN CRISE QUI DOIT ETRE SOUTENU PAR LES POUVOIRS PUBLICS ET, DANS UN MONDE DE L'IMAGE EN MUTATION, ADOPTER DES STRATEGIES QUI LUI SOIENT PROPRES AFIN DE POUVOIR CONTINUER D'EXISTER CULTURELLEMENT ET ECONOMIQUEMENT.

Book Jane Campion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hilary Radner
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9780814334324
  • Pages : 350 pages

Download or read book Jane Campion written by Hilary Radner and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative collection of original essays on Jane Campion, renowned female auteur filmmaker. In Jane Campion: Cinema, Nation, Identity a diverse group of contributors challenge the view that Campion's body of work lacks coherence or unity to instead examine the important characteristics and themes that underlie it. Editors Hilary Radner, Alistair Fox, and Irène Bessière have compiled rich, original scholarship on Campion's oeuvre to probe issues previously neglected by scholars--like her debt to New Zealand sources and her personal views of family dynamics--and those that benefit from additional insight--such as her place in the feminist filmmaking tradition. This volume also investigates Campion's distinct cinematic style in light of these issues to examine the source of her enduring cross-cultural and international appeal. Contributors in the first section explore the creation of subjectivity and identity in Campion's films, which include well-known works like The Piano and Holy Smoke, to trace the unique perspectives of Campion's characters and Campion herself as director. In the second section, essays analyze Campion's close relationship with literature and argue that the singular vision in her literary adaptations stems from her New Zealand background and her personal mythology. Contributors in the third section argue that while Campion devotes considerable attention to the evocation of feminine internal space, she also uses the symbolic potential of her external physical locations to register what is taking place in the inner life of her characters and reflect their search for personal fulfillment. A final group of essays presents a variety of responses to Campion's films, demonstrating that Campion is a highly personal and idiosyncratic director who nonetheless manages to fascinate viewers across a broad cultural spectrum. Taken together, contributors in Jane Campion: Cinema, Nation, Identity present a compelling analysis of Campion's status as a leading female filmmaker with close attention to her distinctive cinematic style and particular mise-en-scène. The collective nature of this volume will appeal to students and teachers of film, literature, and gender studies, as well as fans of Campion's work.
