Book The Diversity of Modern Capitalism

Download or read book The Diversity of Modern Capitalism written by Bruno Amable and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-12-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers why institutional forms of modern capitalist economies differ internationally, and proposes a typology of capitalism based on the theory of institutional complementarity. Different economic models are not simply characterized by different institutional forms, but also by particular patterns of interaction between complementary institutions which are the core characteristics of these models. Institutions are not just simply devices which would be chosen by 'social engineers' in order to perform a function as efficiently as possible; they are the outcome of a political economy process. Therefore, institutional change should be envisaged not as a move towards a hypothetical 'one best way', but as a result of socio-political compromises. Based on a theory of institutions and comparative capitalism, the book proposes an analysis of the diversity of modern economies - from America to Korea - and identifies five different models: the market-based Anglo-Saxon model; Asian capitalism; the Continental European model; the social democratic economies; and the Mediterranean model. Each of these types of capitalism is characterized by specific institutional complementarities. The question of the stability of the Continental European model of capitalism has been open since the beginning of the 1990s: inferior macroeconomic performance compared to Anglo-Saxon economies, alleged unsustainability of its welfare systems, too rigid markets, etc. The book examines the institutional transformations that have taken place within Continental European economies and analyses the political project behind the attempts at transforming the Continental model. It argues that Continental European economies will most likely stay very different from the market-based economies, and caat political strategies promoting institutional change aiming at convergence with the Anglo-Saxon model are bound to meet considerable opposition.

Book The Oxford Handbook of State Capitalism and the Firm

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of State Capitalism and the Firm written by Mike Wright and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a major revival of interest in State Capitalism: what it is, where it is found, and why it is seemingly becoming more ubiquitous. As a concept, it has evolved from radical critiques of the Soviet Union, to being deployed by neo-liberals to describe market reforms deemed imperfect, to settle into a middle ground, as a pragmatic way to describe the state assuming a role as an active economic agent, in addition to its regulatory, social, and security functions. The latter is the central focus of this book, although due attention is accorded to the origins of state capitalism and how it has changed over the years, as well as contemporary ways in which state capitalism may be theorized. This economic agency may assume direct forms, for example, via state owned enterprises. However, it may also be indirect, for example, actively serving private interests through promoting insider firms, who may occupy monopolistic market positions and perform outsourced state functions. In turn, this leads to raising salient governance questions. The latter may encompass agency tensions between public ownership, and political or even private interest control; it may also include issues of transparency and monitoring. Although state capitalism has often been depicted as the preserve of states in the global south, be they developmental or predatory, many forms of state capitalism are visible in mature economies, be they liberal or coordinated, and this is not always associated with superior governance arrangements; indeed, this is an area where clear and easy divisions between the "developing" or "emerging" world and the "developed" or "mature" world may increasingly be breaking down. This volume brings together the accounts of leading experts from around the world; it is explicitly multi-disciplinary, and both consolidates the existing knowledge base, and provides new, novel, and counter-intuitive insights.

Book Institutional Variety in East Asia

Download or read book Institutional Variety in East Asia written by Werner Pascha and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illuminating book broadly addresses the emerging field of 'diversity of Capitalism' from a comparative institutional approach. It explores the varied patterns for achieving coordination in different economic systems, applying them specifically to China, Japan and South Korea. These countries are of particular interest due to the fact that they are often considered to have developed their own peculiar blend of models of capitalism. The expert contributors take a common institutional approach, focusing on institutions at the macro level. They present case studies to demonstrate the diversity of institutional patterns at the advent of the 21st century, both within the East Asian region and elsewhere. Examples of stability within existing institutions are illustrated alongside examples of comprehensive institutional change. Underpinning the case studies are a set of theoretical and empirical challenges for researchers concerned with national institutional settings, path dependence and endogenous dynamics.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Heterodox Economics

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Heterodox Economics written by Tae-Hee Jo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Heterodox Economics presents a comprehensive overview of the latest work on economic theory and policy from a ‘pluralistic’ heterodox perspective. Contributions throughout the Handbook explore different theoretical perspectives including: Marxian-radical political economics; Post Keynesian-Sraffian economics; institutionalist-evolutionary economics; feminist economics; social economics; Régulation theory; the Social Structure of Accumulation approach; and ecological economics. They explain the structural properties and dynamics of capitalism, as well as propose economic and social policies for the benefit of the majority of the population. This book aims, firstly, to provide realistic and coherent theoretical frameworks to understand the capitalist economy in a constructive and forward-looking manner. Secondly, it delineates the future directions, as well as the current state, of heterodox economics, and then provides both ‘heat and light’ on controversial issues, drawing out the commonalities and differences among different heterodox economic approaches. The volume also envisions transformative economic and social policies for the majority of the population and explains why economics is, and should be treated as, a social science. This Handbook will be of compelling interest to those, including students, who wish to learn about alternative economic theories and policies that are rarely found in conventional economics textbooks or discussed in the mainstream media, and to critical economists and other social scientists who are concerned with analyzing pressing socio-economic issues.

Book The Palgrave Handbook of Development Economics

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Development Economics written by Machiko Nissanke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-12 with total page 918 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook responds to the needs and aspirations of current and future generations of development economists by providing critical reference material alongside or in relation to mainstream propositions. Despite the potential of globalisation in accelerating growth and development in low and middle-income countries through the spread of technology, knowledge and information, its current practice in many parts of the world has led to processes that are socially, economically and politically and ecologically unsustainable. It is critical for development economists to engage with the pivotal question of how to change the nature and course of globalisation to make it work for inclusive and sustainable development. Applying a critical and pluralistic approach, the chapters in this Handbook examine economics of development paths under globalisation, focusing on sustainable development in social, environmental, institutional and political economy dimensions. It aims at advancing the frontier of development economics in these key aspects and generating more refined policy perspectives. It is critically reflective in examining effects of globalisation on development paths to date, and in terms of methodological and analytical approaches, as well as forward-thinking in policy perspectives with a view to laying a foundation for sustainable development.

Book The Fictions of American Capitalism

Download or read book The Fictions of American Capitalism written by Jacques-Henri Coste and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fictions of American Capitalism: Working Fictions and the Economic Novel introduces a new way of thinking about fiction in connection with capitalism, especially American capitalism. These essays demonstrate how fiction fulfills a major function of the American capitalist engine, presenting various formulations of American capitalism from the perspective of economists, social scientists, and literary critics. Focusing on three narratives—fictitious capital, working fictions, and the economic novel—the volume questions whether these three types of fiction can be linked under the sign of capitalism. This collection seeks to illustrate the American economy’s dependence on fictitiousness, America’s ideological fictions, and the nation’s creative literary fiction. In relation to what the credit and banking crisis of 2007–2008 exposed about the “unreal” base of the economy, the volume concludes with a call to recognize the economic humanities, arguing that American fiction and American literary studies can provide a useful mirror for economists.

Book Schumpeter s General Theory of Capitalism

Download or read book Schumpeter s General Theory of Capitalism written by Tristan Velardo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph A. Schumpeter made multiple contributions to economic science and beyond. Drawing on this wide range of writings, this book argues that Schumpeter provided a theoretical account of capitalism as a total phenomenon. It methodically reconstructs the “general theory” of capitalism present in Schumpeter's work and shows its consistency and limits. The book identifies three key dimensions of a Schumpeterian general theory of capitalism. First, capitalism is defined at its core as a form or method of economic change: the entrepreneur disrupts a static, equilibrium economy (which is the foundation of all economic activities) with the introduction of an innovation. He is an unbalancing and disruptive force. Second, capitalism is defined as an institutional order composed of private property, private initiative for private profit and credit. Finally, capitalism is defined as a "civilization" or culture: a set of values, attitudes, and beliefs. The general theory thus accounts for capitalism as an economic form (innovation and entrepreneurship) which is the source of economic change; supported and enabled by a particular institutional order without which innovation would remain a dead letter (private property, private profit, and credit); all this generates the culture of capitalism. This book will be of interest to readers in the history of economic thought, economic theory, innovation, political economy, and social theory.

Book Contemporary Capitalism

Download or read book Contemporary Capitalism written by J. Rogers Hollingsworth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that there is no single best institutional arrangement for organizing modern societies. Therefore, the market should not be considered the ideal and universal arrangement for coordinating economic activity. Instead, the editors argue, the economic institutions of capitalism exhibit a large variety of objectives and tools that complement each other and can not work in isolation. The various chapters of the book ask what logics and functions institutions follow and why they emerge, mature and persist in the forms they do.

Book The Palgrave Handbook of Political Economy

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Political Economy written by Ivano Cardinale and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a major contribution to the study of political economy. With chapters ranging from the origins of political economy to its most exciting research fields, this handbook provides a reassessment of political economy as it stands today, whilst boldly gesturing to where it might head in the future. This handbook transcends the received dichotomy between political economy as an application of rational choice theory or as the study of the causes of societies’ material welfare, outlining a broader field of study that encompasses those traditions. This book will be essential reading for academics, researchers, students, and anyone looking for a comprehensive reassessment of political economy.

Book Rethinking Asian Capitalism

Download or read book Rethinking Asian Capitalism written by Thi Anh-Dao Tran and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to reflect on the changes that Vietnam has experienced over the past 30 years, during and after DoiMoi. Through multi-dimensional empirical investigations, it aims to offer theoretical and empirical accounts for how a variety of socioeconomic regimes emerged after the end of the Cold War. Being methodologically pluralist (including both theoretical and empirical studies), it aims to give a higher profile to heterodox thinking in comparative political economy. Particular attention is given to post-socialist governance, economic transformation, land rights, trade-led growth, civil society participation, climate change, and the post-COVID 19 recovery. This book comes at a time when great changes are about to take place in Southeast Asia, where heterodox economic development strategy is rather understudied. With Asia playing an increasingly important role in the world economy, readers wish not only to hear about the economic transformation but also to see certain hidden aspects or original evidence in order that they can perceive the other dimensions put in place in a market-oriented economy. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in transitional economics, development economics and the political economy.

Book Decoding Economic Crises

Download or read book Decoding Economic Crises written by Cristina Peicuti and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-11-24 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constantly bandied about, 'crisis' has tended to be a much-overused word. Understanding the economy and its future challenges requires a detailed and precise analysis of what an economic crisis is. This book sets out to do just that. It first provides a deep historical context of what economic theory says about crises and their perpetual return in the form of a cycle. It then looks at what lessons might be learned from such cycles. Since 1945, the world economy has been dominated by the United States, so an analysis of recent crises must necessarily consider public policy response in this country. Decoding Economic Crises attempts to answer the question of whether American leadership has emerged unscathed from the damage inflicted by the 1975, 1992, 2009 and 2020 recessions and their legacies of debt.Looking forward to the future, there is a particular focus on environmental change. The book interrogates whether devastating crises might ensue, reminiscent of the 'nutritional trap' theorised by Nobel Prize winner Angus Deaton. Finally, Decoding Economic Crises asks if there will be a return to times of extreme scarcity as seen prior to the mid-18th century.
