Trata sobre el tipo de conocimiento general, sociocultural, que periodistas y lectores, entre muchos otros usuarios del lenguaje, han de tener para ser capaces de escribir o leer y comprender una noticia, para participar en una conversación, para dictar una clase o participar en reuniones profesionales, así como para muchos otros géneros de discursos. Hay muchos miles de libros sobre conocimiento, en variadas disciplinas, y muchos cientos de libros sobre discurso. Sin embargo, pese a las múltiples e interesantes relaciones entre las dos nociones, no existe ni siquiera una monografía que, sistemáticamente, se centre en el estudio de esas relaciones. La intención de este libro es, justamente, hacer eso. En esta monografía hemos mostrado, necesariamente a los más altos y, por lo tanto, más superficiales niveles, que el estudio del conocimiento se debe llevar a cabo de una manera profundamente integrada, como acabamos de mostrar en las últimas décadas para el estudio del discurso.

Sotomayor applies Anzaldúa's theories and her own theorizing to curate educational spaces that decolonize White hegemonic academic canons and empower underrepresented learners who may experience a deep sense of not belonging in academia. She situates herself in the study as curator, and her practice as curator as an agent of self-knowledge production and theorizing to create self-empowering learning environments. Sotomayor's work dwells within the lineage of border and cultural studies with shared voices of Gloria Anzaldúa, AnaLouise Keating, Mariana Ortega, Ami Kantawala, Maxine Greene, and Ruth Behar. Her work is considered a guide for teaching practitioners and researchers who hope to develop ways of knowing within their teaching environments that are inclusive and holistic for learners through a non-linear transformative process. 'Teaching In/Between' can be adapted for classroom use for pre-service teachers and instructors as well as creative interpretations for interdisciplinary works within Chicana/x, Latina/x, Art Education, Visual Arts and History, Women's & Gender Studies, Border and Cultural Studies.

Book excerpt: The study questions whether, after a decade of remarkable progress in trade reform, Latin America and the Caribbean really integrates into the global market, offering a promising rapid growth, and good jobs for its workers. For despite the incidence of the loosely called "knowledge economy", the concern prevails that most countries' rich natural resources, still are the determining factor for exports. Policy recommendations include fostering openness to trade, market access, and foreign direct investment flows, in addition to building human capital, institutions, and public infrastructure, without disregarding the natural advantages. To this end, policymakers should aim at developing educational systems that provide quality education, focused on lifelong learning, and training activities to build human capital. Emphasis should follow on research and development (R&D) incentives, and innovations systems, arguing that countries should experiment with taxation incentives, and subsidies to promote both private, and public investments in R&D, (dependent on the institutional capacity of governments to enforce tax laws, and monitor the quality of investments). Moreover, evidence in this report, suggests that information, and communications technology (ICT) can reduce coordination costs, enabling an effective industrialization, and market access.
