Perfect for fans of Korman’s Ungifted and the Masterminds series, as well as Carl Hiaasen’s eco mysteries. As the son of the world’s most famous tech billionaire, spoiled Jett Baranov has always gotten what he wanted. So when his father’s private jet drops him in the middle of the Arkansas wilderness, at a place called the Oasis, Jett can’t believe it. He’s forced to hand over his cell phone, eat grainy veggie patties, and participate in wholesome activities with the other kids, who he has absolutely no interest in hanging out with. As the weeks go on, Jett starts to get used to the unplugged life and even bonds with the other kids over their discovery of a baby-lizard-turned-pet, Needles. But he can’t help noticing that the adults at the Oasis are acting really strange. Jett is determined to get to the bottom of things, but can he convince everybody that he is no longer just a spoiled brat who is making trouble?

Book excerpt: The Network Designer's Handbook will help anyone trapped between limited bandwidth, fault-intolerant computer buses and expensive, over-engineered telecommunications technology. It will help anyone looking for new cost-effective ways to build LAN switches, RAID systems, multimedia servers or multiprocessors. It will help the small company looking for an edge to break into the market, and the large one looking for ways to improve its margins and boost its market share. Book Professional Development for In Service Teachers

Download or read book Professional Development for In Service Teachers written by Chrystalla Mouza and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer science is increasingly becoming an essential 21st century skill. As school systems around the world recognize the importance of computer science, demand for teachers who have the knowledge and skills to deliver computer science instruction is rapidly growing. Yet a number of recent studies indicate that teachers report low confidence and limited understanding of computer science, frequently confusing basic computer literacy skills with computer science. This is true for both teachers at the K-8 level as well as secondary education teachers who frequently transition to computer science from other content areas, such as mathematics. As computer science is not yet included in most teacher preparation programs, professional development is a critical step in efforts to prepare in-service teachers to deliver high-quality computer science instruction. To date, however, research on best practices in computer science professional development has been severely lacking in the literature, making it difficult for researchers and practitioners alike to examine effective in-service preparation models. This book provide examples of professional development approaches that help teachers integrate aspects of computing in existing curricula at the K-8 level or deliver stand-alone computer science courses at the secondary school level. Further, this book identifies computational competencies for teachers, promising pedagogical strategies that advance teacher learning, as well as alternative pathways for ongoing learning including microcredentials. The primary audience of the book is graduate students and faculty in educational technology, educational or cognitive psychology, learning theory, curriculum and instruction, computer science, instructional systems and learning sciences. Additionally, the book will serve as a valuable addition to education practitioners and curriculum developers as well as policy makers looking to increase the number of teachers who are prepared to deliver computing education.

In the spring of 2021, Hannah Brencher found herself depleted and exhausted--and she knew the culprit was her constantly plugged-in lifestyle. Like so many of us, Hannah had been turning to her phone to cope with life in a time of isolation and uncertainty. Those coping mechanisms had calcified into habits she didn't know how to break. Sound familiar? That's when the nudge happened. Turn off your phone and keep turning off your phone. And a challenge was born: 1,000 unplugged hours in one year. Soon after she shared her tracker sheet on her website, thousands of people downloaded it and signed up for their own 1,000-hour challenge. Now in The Unplugged Hours, Hannah demonstrates how the act of powering down changed her entire life. It's a strikingly small thing to do and a surprisingly difficult habit to maintain, but turning off your phone has a substantial impact on your mental health, relationships, time management, and outlook on the world. A powerful weaving of memoir, cultural commentary, and spiritual insights, this life-changing book helps you: Reclaim your ability to be present and engaged with the world around you Swap the hurried, constant pace of technology for a steadier, more rooted way of living Establish your own unplugged rituals and rhythms in daily life Uncover the magic within the ordinary awaiting you just beyond the screen The Unplugged Hours gives you the practical ideas and spiritual inspiration you need to stop scrolling and start living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Screen-free. Battery-free. Pure fun. When Unplugged Play was first published as a parent-friendly encyclopedia of games and activities for all ages, Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, called it “A terrific prescription for much of what ails children and parents today.” Now Unplugged Play gets a fresh and appealing new life as three separate, brightly designed books, each targeted to a specific age group. The need, of course, is significantly more pressing than when the book was originally published—screens are far more ubiquitous, causing parents even greater concern about their overuse—and these timeless, imaginative, easy-to-implement games are here to the rescue. Each volume includes games to play alone and games to play with siblings and friends and parents. Games to play indoors and games for outside. There are craft projects, music activities, guessing games—the kinds of truly fun activities designed to stretch the imagination, spark creativity, build strong bodies, forge friendships, and explore the real world. The opposite of hunkering down in front of an addictive screen.

Download or read book The Disconnected Man written by Jim Turner and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Disconnected Man tracks the journey of one man's surprise discovery of his own disconnectedness and his desire to help other men, and the women who love them, before it is too late. Disconnected men hide out in plain view: in our churches, in our families and in our communities. They are competent, capable men who quietly 'do their duty' and attract little attention. They are fairly happy guys, relatively unemotional and capable of carrying heavy loads of responsibility, but are very difficult to get to know beyond superficial friendship. A closer examination inside their marriages reveals a desert strewn with emotionally emaciated spouses. While their competence may build the church, organize a group, or run a company, they haven't the slightest notion how to connect intimately with those they love. Their wives suffer, usually in silence, while the church and culture press past this couple secretly falling apart. Jim Turner was that disconnected man going about his life, happily fulfilling his duty within his own self-protective bubble, until God suddenly burst it in a most horrific way. His story starts when that devastation left him clinging precariously to the remaining shreds of his broken marriage. Jim longs to share with other disconnected men what he learned through that ordeal, to help them understand their disobedience and show how they can achieve real connection with those they love.

He chain-smoked cigarettes, popped pills, and was angry and depressed. But when he discovered that his mother kept a record of almost every detail of his childhood, an idea began to form. Could knowing the status of every aspect of his body and how his lifestyle affected his health help him learn to take care of himself? A modern-day story of rebirth and redemption, Chris' wisdom and insight will show readers how to improve their lives by paying attention to the relationship between how we move, what we eat, who we spend time with, and how it all makes us feel. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for anyone interested or involved in teaching, training, or instructing, whether you are just getting into the field or thinking about it or you have been teaching for decades. It is for those who administer teaching, training, or instructing. The book was written for academics and those who teach in academies and other professional adult learning environments. The books contents are applicable to all types of colleges, be they community colleges, four-year colleges, or universities, both private and public, for-profit or nonprofit. Most professional practitioner-type instructors go through some sort of instructor school, teachers earn degrees in teaching, but many who teach or instruct are never trained or taught how to teach or train. Few professors are taught how to teach. They have been taught, so this is where they often draw their own teaching styles. Regardless of where you teach, train, or instruct, this book and its contents are for you. The book goes into great detail regarding face-to-face classes as well as online and other delivery methods. The lessons found in this book can be applied to new students, undergraduate, or graduate students. The lessons apply equally to basic, in-service, and specialized training. My hope is that no matter how great of an instructor you are, you will find many new nuggets of information that will add to your teaching toolbox. One of my goals in life is to leave a positive lasting impact. I want to help students and other instructors recognize and reach their full potential. I want you to be the best instructor you can be. I strongly believe we impact people all the time whether we know it or not. You can and will make a big difference in your students lives.
