Book Making Democratic Governance Work

Download or read book Making Democratic Governance Work written by Pippa Norris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is democratic governance good for economic prosperity? Does it accelerate progress towards social welfare and human development? Does it generate a peace-dividend and reduce conflict at home? Within the international community, democracy and governance are widely advocated as intrinsically desirable goals. Nevertheless, alternative schools of thought dispute their consequences and the most effective strategy for achieving critical developmental objectives. This book argues that both liberal democracy and state capacity need to be strengthened to ensure effective development, within the constraints posed by structural conditions. Liberal democracy allows citizens to express their demands, hold public officials to account and rid themselves of ineffective leaders. Yet rising public demands that cannot be met by the state generate disillusionment with incumbent officeholders, the regime, or ultimately the promise of liberal democracy ideals. Thus governance capacity also plays a vital role in advancing human security, enabling states to respond effectively to citizen's demands.

Book Abstract Art as a Path Healing Connection and Market Value

Download or read book Abstract Art as a Path Healing Connection and Market Value written by Dóris M. Fabiano and published by Portal dos Deuses. This book was released on with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout my journey, art has been a path of healing and transformation. With each new work, I strive to create effects that go beyond aesthetics, providing a physical, emotional, and spiritual experience for those who come close to this art. Places like Hauser & Wirth, Almine Rech, and the immersive Hidden Gallery have been fundamental to the art world as they evoke art's transformative power. Other notable galleries, such as Gazelli Art House, the London Science Gallery, and the daring Eternal Art, open doors to a new way of thinking and feeling the impact of art, much like the art I create. Moreover, spaces like CAG Vancouver, Galerie Ropac, and The Modern have taught me to view art as a dialogue with the viewer, expanding my understanding of the effects art can have on people. Initiatives like the Affordable Art Fair, Rise Art, and the engaging ICA challenge us to go beyond the conventional, demonstrating how art can be accessible, universal, and profoundly personal. The Saatchi Art platform and the innovative project at Pace Gallery open up opportunities for emerging artists to bring their voices to a global audience. In events like Frieze and Art Dubai, I see true celebrations of contemporary art that inspire me to constantly seek new forms of expression and connection. Other institutions, such as Baltic Art, Wilson Center, Gagosian, and the ever-inspiring Eden Gallery, represent pillars of learning for me. Each of these spaces, from the National Gallery, ICA San Diego, and Creative Growth, to more intimate exhibitions like those at Sultan Gallery, are part of a vast network of support and inspiration that strengthens the art world. Finally, I am profoundly grateful for the movements and collaborations in places like Chihuly, Kala, and the iconic Guggenheim, which remind us of the boundless possibilities within art. Other centers, such as Made4Art, Contemporary Calgary, and the careful curation at Kasmin Gallery, reinforce my commitment to art as a channel for healing and spiritual connection. It is with this deep admiration for spaces like the South London Gallery, Agora Gallery, Van Art Gallery, Monterone Art, and many others that I created this book. It is an expression of my gratitude to these galleries, which, over the years, have been an invaluable source of learning and inspiration. May this work serve as a bridge to new projects of healing and elevation, carrying the same transformative energy that these places promote. According to the report The Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting in 2024, there has been a surge in interest in emerging artists in 2024, with 52% of HNWIs directing their spending towards emerging artists, highlighting a trend towards investing in new voices. High demand for multi-channel sales: Dealers remain the top choice for HNWIs, with 95% purchasing through galleries, online and social media. Generational wealth transfer and collecting preferences: With an estimated $6 trillion in wealth projected to transfer to younger generations over the next 20 years, many heirs are showing a greater preference for diverse and experience-rich investments, such as transformative and healing art.

Download or read book Epic Landscapes written by Julia Sienkewicz and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epic Landscapes is the first study devoted to architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe’s substantial artistic oeuvre from 1795, when he set sail from Britain to Virginia, to late 1798, when he relocated to Pennsylvania. Thus, this book offers the only extended consideration of Latrobe’s Virginian watercolors, including a series of complex trompe l’oeil studies and three significant illustrated manuscripts. Though Latrobe’s architecture is well known, his watercolors have received little critical attention. Epic Landscapes rediscovers Latrobe’s watercolors as an ambitious body of work and reconsiders the close relationship between the visual and spatial sensibility of these images and his architectural designs. It also offers a fresh analysis of Latrobe within the context of creative practice in the Atlantic world at the end of the eighteenth century as he explored contemporary ideas concerning the form of art for Republican society and the social impacts of revolution. Published by University of Delaware Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

Book Tibetan Magic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cameron Bailey
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2024-03-07
  • ISBN : 1350354953
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Tibetan Magic written by Cameron Bailey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the theme of magic in Tibetan contexts, encompassing both pre-modern and modern text-cultures as well as contemporary practices. It offers a new understanding of the identity and role of magical specialists in both historical and contemporary contexts. Combining the theoretical approaches of anthropology, ethnography, religious and textual studies, the book aims to shed light on experiences, practices and practitioners that have been frequently marginalized by the normative mainstream monastic Buddhist traditions and Western Buddhist scholarship, which focuses primarily on meditation and philosophy. The book explores the intersection between magic/folk practices and Tantra, a complex, socio-religious phenomenon associated not only with the religious and political elites who sponsored it, but also with 'marginal' ethnic groups and social milieus, as well as with lay communities at large, who resorted to ritual agents to fulfil their worldly needs.
