Book Integrated Groundwater Management

Download or read book Integrated Groundwater Management written by Anthony J Jakeman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to document for the first time the dimensions and requirements of effective integrated groundwater management (IGM). Groundwater management is a formidable challenge, one that remains one of humanity’s foremost priorities. It has become a largely non-renewable resource that is overexploited in many parts of the world. In the 21st century, the issue moves from how to simply obtain the water we need to how we manage it sustainably for future generations, future economies, and future ecosystems. The focus then becomes one of understanding the drivers and current state of the groundwater resource, and restoring equilibrium to at-risk aquifers. Many interrelated dimensions, however, come to bear when trying to manage groundwater effectively. An integrated approach to groundwater necessarily involves many factors beyond the aquifer itself, such as surface water, water use, water quality, and ecohydrology. Moreover, the science by itself can only define the fundamental bounds of what is possible; effective IGM must also engage the wider community of stakeholders to develop and support policy and other socioeconomic tools needed to realize effective IGM. In order to demonstrate IGM, this book covers theory and principles, embracing: 1) an overview of the dimensions and requirements of groundwater management from an international perspective; 2) the scale of groundwater issues internationally and its links with other sectors, principally energy and climate change; 3) groundwater governance with regard to principles, instruments and institutions available for IGM; 4) biophysical constraints and the capacity and role of hydroecological and hydrogeological science including water quality concerns; and 5) necessary tools including models, data infrastructures, decision support systems and the management of uncertainty. Examples of effective, and failed, IGM are given. Throughout, the importance of the socioeconomic context that connects all effective IGM is emphasized. Taken as a whole, this work relates the many facets of effective IGM, from the catchment to global perspective.

Book Optimal Conjunctive Management of Coupled Surface Water and Groundwater Systems Using Gradient Dynamic Programming

Download or read book Optimal Conjunctive Management of Coupled Surface Water and Groundwater Systems Using Gradient Dynamic Programming written by Charles Russell Philbrick (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents an analytic procedure to derive rules for managing a conjunctive use system. In this thesis, system management refers to the specification of optimal controls: decisions regarding the release and allocation of water. The procedure is applied to a proposed conjunctive use system of practical interest, where the facilities have predetermined characteristics and where control decisions are affected by uncertain autocorrelated inputs. Optimal decisions are determined by applying the optimization method of gradient dynamic programming to a numerical model of the conjunctive use system. The resulting optimal decisions demonstrate that application of the analytic procedure can greatly improve the management of a conjunctive use system. These decisions are significantly more efficient than those that result from application of heuristic rules. Also, the analytic procedure incorporates the effect of autocorrelation, and the resulting optimal decisions demonstrate that autocorrelation is important in the control of conjunctive use systems because of the different capabilities and constraints that surface reservoir storage and aquifer storage present.

Book Adaptive Catchment Management and Reservoir Operation

Download or read book Adaptive Catchment Management and Reservoir Operation written by Guangtao Fu and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River catchments and reservoirs play a central role in water security, food supply, flood risk management, hydropower generation, and ecosystem services; however, they are now under increasing pressure from population growth, economic activities, and changing climate means and extremes in many parts of the world. Adaptive management of river catchments and reservoirs requires an in-depth understanding of the impacts of future uncertainties and thus the development of robust, sustainable solutions to meet the needs of various stakeholders and the environment. To tackle the huge challenges in moving towards adaptive catchment management, this book presents the latest developments in cutting-edge knowledge, novel methodologies, innovative management strategies, and case studies, focusing on the following themes: reservoir dynamics and impact analysis of dam construction, optimal reservoir operation, climate change impacts on hydrological processes and water management, and integrated catchment management.
