Download or read book Conjugated Polymer Sensors Design Principles Towards Enhanced Versatility written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A description of how semiconducting fluorescent polymers function as chemosensors for a variety of chemical vapors is presented. Amplification is achieved by transport of optically induced excitations throughout a polymer film. Careful and thoughtful design of polymer chemical structures is crucial to achieving high sensitivity towards nitroaromatic explosives such as trinitrotoluene (TNT) and dinitrotoluene (DNT). These semiconductive materials have been incorporated into functional sensory devices used for ultratrace explosive detection in the search for hidden landmines. Research efforts in our group have been aimed improving the sensitivity, selectivity, and versatility of conjugated polymer sensors through rational molecularly design.

Book Conjugated Conducting Polymers

Download or read book Conjugated Conducting Polymers written by Helmut Kiess and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the current understanding of electronic, optical and magnetic properties of conjugated polymers in both the semiconducting and metallic states. It introduces in particular novel phenomena and concepts in these quasi one-dimensional materials that differ from the well-established concepts valid for crystalline semiconductors. After a brief introductory chapter, the second chapter presents basic theore tical concepts and treats in detail the various models for n-conjugated polymers and the computational methods required to derive observable quantities. Specific spatially localized structures, often referred to as solitons, polarons and bipolarons, result naturally from the interaction between n-electrons and lattice displacements. For a semi-quantitative understanding of the various measure ments, electron-electron interactions have to be incorporated in the models; this in turn makes the calculations rather complicated. The third chapter is devoted to the electrical properties of these materials. The high metallic conductivity achieved by doping gave rise to the expression conducting polymers, which is often used for such materials even when they are in their semiconducting or insulating state. Although conductivity is one of the most important features, the reader will learn how difficult it is to draw definite conclusions about the nature of the charge carriers and the microscopic transport mechanism solely from electrical measurements. Optical properties are discussed in the fourth chapter.

Book EHANCEMENT OF CONJUGATED POLYMER CHARACTERIZATION METHODS FROM THE INDIVIDUAL CHAIN TO MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES

Download or read book EHANCEMENT OF CONJUGATED POLYMER CHARACTERIZATION METHODS FROM THE INDIVIDUAL CHAIN TO MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES written by Ryan Fair and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conjugated polymers are a subset of polymers which act as electrical semiconductors, enabling the design of electronic devices such as field effect transistors, photovoltaics, and biomedical sensors without the use of inorganic compounds to form the active layer. This subset of semiconductor materials has many unique advantages over their inorganic counterparts: they can be lightweight, solution processable, flexible, stretchable, and biocompatible. However, these distinct properties are not true for all conjugated polymers. Creating devices with the desired properties requires an understanding of the structure-property relationships of these materials. This work will provide novel tools for predicting and characterizing conjugated polymer properties. Doing so will aid the development of design principles for future researchers who wish to customize material properties based on the intended application. First, we will outline methods for accurately characterizing conjugated polymer molecular weight and explore possible sources of error when using gel permeation chromatography. Molecular weight is a critical polymer property which can vary for any given sample. A universal calibration is necessary for obtaining accurate measurements of semiflexible polymers but doing so still does not ensure accurate results. We shall demonstrate the importance of monitoring outlet concentration for molecular weight measurements, which is necessary due to the poorer solubilities of conjugated polymers relative to their flexible synthetic counterparts. Additionally, we will provide discussion of polymer swelling and shrinking effects in solution and how these may influence solution measurement accuracy. Next, we will demonstrate the utility of computational tools for predicting polymer backbone stiffness, or persistence length. This parameter is known to correlate with macroscale device properties, such as mechanical rigidity and electrical conductivity. In this work we will establish the efficacy of a computationally simple tool for predicting persistence lengths of conjugated polymers based on the freely rotating chain model. The predictive model will be compared with measurements from small angle neutron scattering and static light scattering to demonstrate the accuracy of the tool. Finally, we will provide an investigation of novel concepts for electron microscopy of conjugated polymer thin films. We will demonstrate the utility of contemporary techniques for automated acquisition and computational analysis of electron microscopy datasets. This approach will take what is traditionally a qualitative measurement of material morphology and transform it into a quantitative technique. Additionally, we will provide an exploration of some practical limitations of measuring conjugated polymers using electron microscopy, with emphasis on the effects of beam damage at cryogenic conditions. This work will demonstrate an inverse correlation between observed beam damage and probe size at nanoscale probe sizes. Through these works, we will establish characterization methods and predictive models for future researchers who wish to explore structure property relationships of conjugated polymers. Methods will probe properties at scales ranging from the individual polymer chain all the way up to micron-scale morphology. In doing so, we will accelerate the pace of discovery for this exciting class of materials.

Book Doping in Conjugated Polymers

Download or read book Doping in Conjugated Polymers written by Pradip Kar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An A-to-Z of doping including its definition, its importance, methods of measurement, advantages and disadvantages, properties and characteristics—and role in conjugated polymers The versatility of polymer materials is expanding because of the introduction of electro-active behavior into the characteristics of some of them. The most exciting development in this area is related to the discovery of intrinsically conductive polymers or conjugated polymers, which include such examples as polyacetylene, polyaniline, polypyrrole, and polythiophene as well as their derivatives. "Synmet" or "synthetic metal" conjugated polymers, with their metallic characteristics, including conductivity, are of special interest to researchers. An area of limitless potential and application, conjugated polymers have sparked enormous interest, beginning in 2000 when the Nobel Prize for the discovery and development of electrically conducting conjugated polymers was awarded to three scientists: Alan J. Heeger, Alan G. MacDiarmid, and Hideki Shirakawa. Conjugated polymers have a combination of properties—both metallic (conductivity) and polymeric; doping gives the conjugated polymer's semiconducting a wide range of conductivity, from insulating to low conducting. The doping process is a tested effective method for producing conducting polymers as semiconducting material, providing a substitute for inorganic semiconductors. Doping in Conjugated Polymers is the first book dedicated to the subject and offers a comprehensive A-to-Z overview. It details doping interaction, dopant types, doping techniques, and the influence of the dopant on applications. It explains how the performance of doped conjugated polymers is greatly influenced by the nature of the dopants and their level of distribution within the polymer, and shows how the electrochemical, mechanical, and optical properties of the doped conjugated polymers can be tailored by controlling the size and mobility of the dopants counter ions. The book also examines doping at the nanoscale, in particular, with carbon nanotubes. Readership The book will interest a broad range of researchers including chemists, electrochemists, biochemists, experimental and theoretical physicists, electronic and electrical engineers, polymer and materials scientists. It can also be used in both graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses on conjugated polymers and polymer technology.

Book Principles of Chemical Sensors

Download or read book Principles of Chemical Sensors written by Jiri Janata and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-14 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do not learn the tricks of the trade, learn the trade I started teachinggraduate coursesin chemical sensors in early 1980s, ?rst as a o- quarter (30 h) class then as a semester course and also as several intensive, 4–5-day courses. Later I organized my lecture notes into the ?rst edition of this book, which was published by Plenum in 1989 under the title Principles of Chemical Sensors. I started working on the second edition in 2006. The new edition of Principles of Chemical Sensors is a teaching book, not a textbook. Let me explain the difference. Textbooks usually cover some more or less narrow subject in maximum depth. Such an approach is not possible here. The subject of chemical sensors is much too broad, spanning many aspects of physical and analytical chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, solid-state physics, optics, device fabrication, electrical engine- ing, statistical analysis, and so on. The challengefor me has been to present uniform logical coverage of such a large area. In spite of its relatively shallow depth, it is intended as a graduate course. At its present state the amount of material is more thancan be coveredin a one-semestercourse (45h). Two one-quartercourseswould be more appropriate. Because of the breadth of the material, the sensor course has a somewhat unexpected but, it is hoped, bene?cial effect.
