This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shell structures are used in all phases of structures, from space vehicles to deep submergence hulls, from nuclear reactors to domes on sport arenas and civic buildings. With new materials and manufacturing methods, curved thin walled structures are being used increasingly. This text is a graduate course in the theory of shells. It covers shells of isotropic materials, such as metal alloys and plastics, and shells of composite materials, such as fibre reinforced polymer, metal or ceramic matrix materials. It provides the essential information for an understanding of the underlying theory, and solution of some of the basic problems. It also provides a basis to study the voluminous shell literature. Beyond being primarily a textbook, it is intended also for self study by practising engineers who would like to learn more about the behaviour of shells. The book has two parts: Part I deals with shells of isotropic materials. In this part the mathematical formulations are introduced involving curvilinear coordinates. The techniques of solutions and resulting behavior is compared to planar thin walled isotropic structures such as plates and beams. Part II then treats the behavior of shells, involving anisotropic composite materials, so widely used today. The analysis involves the complications due to the many elastic constants, effects of transverse shear deformation, thermal thickening and offer effects arising from the properties of composite materials.

Download or read book Structural Failure and Plasticity written by X.L. Zhao and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-10-04 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As mankind continues to push back the boundaries and begins to explore other worlds and the ocean depths, a thorough understanding of how structures behave when subjected to extremes in temperature, pressure, and high loading rates will be essential. This symposium provided the perfect forum for presenting research into structures subjected to such extreme loads. There were a large number of papers presented under topics of impact, blast and shock loading, indicating a strong research interest in high rates of loading. Similarly new topics have been added to the traditional symposium list such as fire loading, earthquake loading, and fatigue and connection failures. It is clear now that fundamental knowledge of plastic deformation of structures to various extreme loads is coming of age. Each full paper was peer reviewed by at least two experts in the field.

Download or read book Thin Walled Structures written by J.Y. Richard Liew and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-11-27 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin-plated structures are used extensively in building construction, automobile, aircraft, shipbuilding and other industries because of a number of favourable factors such as high strength-weight ratio, development of new materials and processes and the availability of efficient analytical methods. This class of structure is made by joining thin plates together at their edges and they rely for their rigidity and strength upon the tremendous stiffness and load-carrying capacity of the flat plates from which they are made. Many of the problems encountered in these structures arise because of the effects of local buckling. The knowledge of various facets of this phenomenon has increased dramatically since the 1960s. Problem areas which were hitherto either too complex for rigorous analysis or whose subtleties were not fully realized have in these years been subjected to intensive study. Great advances have been made in the areas of inelastic buckling. The growth in use of lightweight strong materials, such as fibre-reinforced plastics has also been a contributory factor towards the need for advances in the knowledge of the far post-buckling range. The conference is a sequel to the international conference organised by the University of Strathclyde in December 1996 and this international gathering will provide the opportunity for discussion of recent developments and trends in design of thin-walled structures.

Download or read book Buckling and Postbuckling of Beams Plates and Shells written by M. Reza Eslami and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains eight chapters treating the stability of all major areas of the flexural theory. It covers the stability of structures under mechanical and thermal loads and all areas of structural, loading and material types. The structural element may be assumed to be made of a homogeneous/isotropic material, or of a functionally graded material. Structures may experience the bifurcation phenomenon, or they may follow the postbuckling path. This volume explains all these aspects in detail. The book is self-contained and the necessary mathematical concepts and numerical methods are presented in such a way that the reader may easily follow the topics based on these basic tools. It is intended for people working or interested in areas of structural stability under mechanical and/or thermal loads. Some basic knowledge in classical mechanics and theory of elasticity is required.
Download or read book Rotating Shell Dynamics written by Hua Li and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-01-19 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are numerous engineering applications for high-speed rotating structures which rotate about their symmetric axes. For example, free-flight sub-munition projectiles rotate at high speeds in order to achieve an aerodynamically-stable flight. This is the first book of its kind to provide a comprehensive and systematic description of rotating shell dynamics. It not only provides the basic derivation of the dynamic governing equations for rotating shells, but documents benchmark results for free vibration, critical speed and parametric resonance. It is written in a simple and clear manner making it accessible both the expert and graduate student. The first monograph to provide a detailed description of rotating shell dynamics Dynamic problems such as free vibration and dynamic stability are examined in detail, for basic shells of revolutions

Download or read book Hydrostatically Loaded Structures written by W.A. Nash and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-10-27 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powered submersibles have enabled the exploration of lake and ocean depths, and are used extensively for inspection of drilling rigs and offshore pipelines. Their potential for the discovery of undersea mineral resources is widely acknowledged. The design of such vehicles poses many problems not encountered with land-based systems: for example, normal pressures are very large, and many structural elements are extremely sensitive to initial geometric imperfections.Following a review of the history and development of submersibles, each chapter concentrates on a specific geometric design. The bibliography is unusually complete, and includes summaries of many referenced publications. This unique book covers all aspects of the structural mechanics, analysis and design of submersibles, and will be invaluable to ocean engineers, naval architects and graduate students entering the field.

Download or read book Shell and Membrane Theories in Mechanics and Biology written by Holm Altenbach and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest results related to shells characterize and design shells, plates, membranes and other thin-walled structures, a multidisciplinary approach from macro- to nanoscale is required which involves the classical disciplines of mechanical/civil/materials engineering (design, analysis, and properties) and physics/biology/medicine among others. The book contains contributions of a meeting of specialists (mechanical engineers, mathematicians, physicists and others) in such areas as classical and non-classical shell theories. New trends with respect to applications in mechanical, civil and aero-space engineering, as well as in new branches like medicine and biology are presented which demand improvements of the theoretical foundations of these theories and a deeper understanding of the material behavior used in such structures.
