Mario Bunge is a philosopher of great repute, whose enormous output includes dozens of books in several languages, which will culminate with his Treatise on Basic Philosophy projected in seven volumes, four of which have already appeared [Reidel, I 974ff. ]. He is known for his works on research methods, the foundations of physics, biology, the social sciences, the diverse applications of mathematical methods and of systems analysis, and more. Bunge stands for exact philosophy, classical liberal social philosophy, rationalism and enlightenment. He is brave, even relentless, in his attacks on subjectivism, mentalism, and spiritualism, as well as on positivism, mechanism, and dialectics. He believes in logic and clarity, in science and open-mindedness - not as the philosopher's equivalent to the poli tician's rhetoric of motherhood and apple pie, but as a matter of everyday practice, as qualities to cultivate daily in our pursuit of the life worth living. Bunge's philosophy often has the quality of Columbus's egg, and he is prone to come to swift and decisive conclusions on the basis of argu ments which seem to him valid; he will not be perturbed by the fact that most of the advanced thinkers in the field hold different views.

Book excerpt: O IX Colóquio Internacional de Filosofia da Mente foi realizado entre os dias 26 e 28 de abril de 2017, no Campus Dom Bosco da Universidade Federal de São João del-Rei (UFSJ). O evento reuniu alguns dos principais pesquisadores brasileiros na área, além de três convidados estrangeiros. Foram cerca de 20 apresentações de palestrantes convidados e mais de 40 comunicações durante 3 dias de intenso debate e confraternização entre todos os participantes e o público presente. Ao contrário de edições anteriores, nessa edição do evento não foi proposto nenhum tema específico, sendo os palestrantes e comunicadores incentivados a apresentarem as pesquisas que estavam realizando no momento. A intenção, que se mostrou bem sucedida, era estimular a contribuição e o conhecimento mútuo entre os pesquisadores da área no Brasil. Em sua nona edição, o Colóquio deu continuidade a uma já consolidada tradição de inegável sucesso. Os 15 artigos que compõem essas Atas foram selecionados dentre as mais de 40 comunicações realizadas no Colóquio; comunicações essas que foram selecionadas de um total de cerca de 80 submissões. Trata-se, portanto, de uma amostra selecionada e representativa da pesquisa hoje feita no Brasil na área de filosofia da mente e áreas correlatas. Muitas pessoas contribuíram para a execução do evento, e certamente seriamos injustos com alguns nomes se tentássemos nomear cada um. Vamos registrar apenas nossos mais sinceros agradecimentos aos colegas do GT-Filosofia da Mente, em especial aos professores Maria Eunice Quilici Gonzalez e André Leclerc, que iniciaram essa tradição há quase 20 anos atrás. Desejamos longa vida ao Colóquio, e bons estudos para aqueles que porventura vieram a consultar essas Atas.

Book excerpt: This book discusses Ramon Llull (ca. 1232-1316), the Christian missionary, philosopher and mystic, his relations with Jewish contemporaries, and how he integrated Jewish mystical teachings (Kabbalah) into his thought system so as to persuade the Jews to convert. Issues dealt with include Llull's attitude towards the Jews, his knowledge of Kabbalah, his theories regarding the Trinity and Incarnation (the Art), and the impact of his ideas on the Jewish community. The book challenges conventional scholarly opinion regarding Christian knowledge of contemporary Jewish thought and questions the assumption that Christians did not know or use Kabbalah before the Renaissance. Further, it suggests that Lull was well aware of ongoing intellectual and religious controversies within the Jewish community, as well as being the first Christian to acknowledge and appreciate Kabbalah as a tool for conversion.
