Book Don t Fire Your Church Members

Download or read book Don t Fire Your Church Members written by Jonathan Leeman and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church membership is not just a status, it’s an office. Leaders shouldn’t fire members from the responsibilities given to them by Jesus—they should train them! When members are trained, the church grows in holiness and love, discipleship and mission. Complacency and nominalism are diminished. Jesus gives every church member an office in the church’s government: to assume final responsibility for guarding the what and the who of the gospel in the church and its ministry. Similarly, Jesus gives leaders to the church for equipping the members to do this church-building and mission-accomplishing work. In our day, the tasks of reinvigorating congregational authority and elder authority must work together. The vision of congregationalism pictured in this book offers an integrated view of the Christian life. Congregationalism is biblical, but biblical congregationalism just might look a little different than you expect. It is nothing less than Jesus’ authorization for living out his kingdom rule among a people on mission.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Congregationalists: Who They Are and What They Do It is therefore different from the Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopal, or Roman Catholic churches, in which each local congregation is part of one great organization, and subject to some authority outside of itself. Are churches of any other denomination congregational in form? Yes, the Baptist, the Plymouth Brethren, the Christian, the Disciples of Christ, the Unitarians, and some others - in all nearly thirty-eight percent of the congregations in the United States. There are about ten times as many religious organizations congregationally governed as there are Congregational churches. How are they different from Congregational churches? They differ frequently in some special doctrine which is emphasized in their name, as the Baptists and Unitarians. Why is it inaccurate to speak of the whole denomination as the Congregational Church of the United States? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congregational Connections challenges both clergy and lay leaders to become deeply sensitized to the demographic reality of six separate generational cohorts being alive at once. This is the first time in the worlds history that such a thing has happened to humans, and none of us has the reality clear in our minds yet. It takes work to analyze consciously what we are seeing when multiple generations are present. We discover that we are quite happy when we see the expected three Elders, Parents raising kids, and the children themselves-- and we often fail to ask: Who isnt here? Demographers and marketers have created names for these six cohorts (a cohort is a group of people born within a 20 or 25 year span who have some distinctive characteristics). In America today we have Builders (approximately ages 110-87); Silents (86-68); Boomers (67- 51/48); GenXers (51/48 27); Millennials (27- 11) and GenZ (10 and under). The first three Builders, Silents and Boomers are referred to in Congregational Connections as Olders; and the second three (GenX, Millennials and GenZ) are referred to as Youngers. A great shift in worldview and preferred technologies separates Olders and Youngers. Today five of these cohorts (the youngest Builders, Silents, Boomers, GenX and the oldest Millennials) are playing adult roles in a world that recently seemed to be populated by Elders and Parents raising Children. It is making everyone grumpy. There does not seem to be psychological room for all these players. The March 2011 cover of Philadelphia Magazine pictured a generic texting device with the following text: Dear Baby Boomers, Just die already. (Well take Philly from here. Thanks) XOXO, Generation X In congregation after congregation, Olders are wondering why the Youngers dont seem to be attending worship regularly. Yet when they do come, the Olders wish they would make their children stop texting and the parents would stop checking their cell phones. Youngers are wondering why Olders want to have all these time-wasting repetitive meetings and wont use e-technologies to avoid them. And why arent they being respected? Congregational Connections offers a discussion of who these cohorts are, and why they act the way they do. Its nine chapters cover: How We Got Here; Six Different Cohort Experiences; The Generational Divide; Realities for Congregational Life; Worship; Christian Formation; Programs and Space; Community is Congregation, and The Way Forward: Hope. The books aim is not only to have readers become aware of the six cohorts and their different attitudes and needs, but also to offer insights through Congregational Moments (case studies) that let readers see how these realities play out in church life, and suggest questions for discussion. Why is it happening now? In her book, The Great Emergence, Phyllis Tickle offers us a thesis that we are in the middle of the next Reformation. These happen every five hundred years, and take about 150 years to roll their paradigm shift of technology and worldview through society. The last Reformation was fueled by printing technology that promoted widespread literacy and a worldview shift that supported increasing political democracy and social leveling. The one that we are living through now is about electronic technology (radio, phone, television, computers, internet, and who knows?) and an even flatter social environment. Those changes by themselves seem sufficient to make the Second Reformation happen. Yet added to their pressures is the arrival of six generational cohorts on the worlds playing field. Each cohort has its own identity, but Olders and Youngers break into two different sides of the game. Whats more, by the time the Second Reformation finishes rolling through, medical advances may add several decades to the average lifespan. Perhaps eight, nine or even more generational cohorts will be alive together at its end. Right now, congre

Book Understanding the Congregation s Authority

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congregational authority is less about the meetings and more about the mission. Congregationalism has a bad rap for well-known reasons: inefficient meetings, upstart members, browbeaten ministers. But biblical congregationalism isn’t so much about the meetings. It’s about empowering the whole church to promote and protect the gospel. Pastors lead and equip. Members get to work strengthening one another and pursuing Christ’s mission in the world.

Book excerpt: New faith communities are appearing across the U.S.. Many of them bear little resemblance—on the surface—to ‘church’ in its conventional form. But when we look a little deeper we see striking continuity with the most deeply rooted practices of the Christian faith in community. What are those practices? What do these unconventional, alternative faith communities look like? How are they, perhaps, indicators of a hopeful new future for the church? And what can we learn from them? Authors Kara Brinkerhoff and Tim Shapiro spent more than a year researching and exploring these questions, closely examining the life of a dozen alternative faith communities across the country. They include new monastic communities, food-oriented communities, affinity group communities, house churches, hybrid churches and others. They are creative, ingenious, innovative, clever, dynamic and transformative. But they represent human expressions of activities that have always been part of human religious congregations: hospitality, learning, storytelling, care, leadership, worship and honoring place. This fascinating book goes beyond simply analyzing current trends. It reveals how innovative Christians are engaging in time-honored practices, creating new types of communities, which will shape the church to come. Further, it shows us how we too might innovate while holding true to the essential practices of our gathered faith. This is an instructive picture of Christian community, past, present and future.
