Book Congregational Studies in the UK

Download or read book Congregational Studies in the UK written by Karin Tusting and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first comprehensive introduction to congregational studies in the UK. Through a series of innovative essays, it explores the difference that the increasingly post-Christian nature of British society is making to life in Christian congregations, and compares this to the very different scenario which exists in the USA. Contributions from leading scholars in the field include rich case studies of local communities and theoretical analyses which reflect on issues of method and develop broader understandings. Congregational studies is revealed as a rich and growing field of interest to scholars across many disciplines and to those involved in congregational life.

Book The Churches and the Working Classes

Download or read book The Churches and the Working Classes written by Patricia Midgley and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to our perception of the centrality of the churches in English life in the nineteenth century, the disappointing results of the 1851 Religious Census led religious leaders to seek a variety of ways to increase religious allegiance as the century progressed. The apparent apathy and lack of interest in formal religion on the part of the working classes was particularly galling, and the various denominations tried hard to attract them through evangelical missions as well as social and charitable ventures which sometimes competed with religious concerns, to the latter’s detriment. This book traces the motivations, concerns and efforts of the churches, particularly in the period between 1870 and 1920, and the ambivalent responses of ordinary people. The Education Act of 1870 led to the churches losing their hold on the education of the young, a consequence foreseen by many church leaders, but unable to be prevented. By 1920 it was apparent that the churches’ optimism regarding an increased role with a war-weary population would not be fulfilled. The focus is on the city of Leeds, representative of the industrialised urban areas with burgeoning populations which proved to be such a challenge to the churches, at the same time stimulating them to ever-greater efforts.

Book Chapels of England

Download or read book Chapels of England written by Christopher Wakeling and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Protestant Reformation, religion remained remarkably unstable in Great Britain, and places of worship were the focus of dispute and regular change. Beginning in the seventeenth century, the growth of the Nonconformist denominations left a particularly rich architectural legacy in the form of a vast and diverse network of churches and chapels constructed throughout the towns and cities of England. Although many of these buildings have been lost, about 20,000 remain, some still in use by congregations to this day. The Chapels of England provides the first chronological history of Nonconformist architecture in England, from the seventeenth century to the present day. Beautifully illustrated throughout with interior and exterior photography, the book includes examples that range from small wayside chapels to large urban churches and encompass all the country's regions and each of Nonconformity's main religious traditions. The book's chronological organization allows readers to follow the main developments in the architecture of Nonconformity and understand how these developments fit within broader religious and cultural conversations.

Book excerpt: Table of contents: Leeds is a city with a rich commercial tradition and fine buildings to match. Its prosperity, founded on the wool trade, is reflected in the seventeenth-century church of St John, with its magnificent Jacobean woodcarving and furnishings, while the town's eighteenth-century expansion produced elegant Georgian parades and squares with homes for wealthy merchants. They now stand cheek-by-jowl with solid, proud warehouses and offices of the railway age in a wonderful variety of styles ranging from elegant neo-Grecian to Gothic, Moorish and Egyptian.
