Surgeons typically find these syndromes to be abstruse and congenital hand conditions can represent an enigma even to pediatric geneticists. This book is designed to serve as a practical, up-to-date reference that will enable practitioners and students in a variety of disciplines to easily recognize the most common congenital upper extremity anomalies and syndromes. In total, 37 congenital upper extremity anomalies and 127 syndromes are discussed. Salient and common presenting features are described in detail and illustrated with the aid of high-quality digital color photographs whenever possible. In addition, relevant background information is included on such aspects as prevalence, etiology, pathogenesis and findings elsewhere in the body.

Book Congenital Deformities of the Hand

Download or read book Congenital Deformities of the Hand written by W. Blauth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 10-15 years marked progress has been made in the surgical treatment of congenital anomalies of the hand. More and more, the reluctance to operate on these deformities has been abandoned. One reason for this - at least in the German-speaking countries - was the thalidomide catastrophe (1959-1962), which involved the birth of many children with deformed upper limbs. These previously rare severe abnormalities resulted in many problems and required new ways of thinking in terms of their treatment by all persons concerned with their care. At the same time hand surgery was beginning to come of age and the combination of these two events increased the interest in the field of hand anomalies, particularly by orthopaedic surgeons who had always been involved in it. The idea and preparation for this book go back to 1964. Since that time nearly all operations on anomalous hands were systematically charted by us. They were photographically recorded from skin incision to wound closure. Regular follow-up examinations were performed. This atlas represents our experience gained in over a thousand operations. The book has been written by practitioners. We hope that a hand surgeon looking for additional advice will find answers in regard to therapy and surgical suggestions. This intent influenced the book's compilation and structure: - Only those operations that have given us good long-term results will be discussed.

Book Congenital Anomalies of the Upper Extremity

Download or read book Congenital Anomalies of the Upper Extremity written by Donald R. Laub Jr. and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in a revised and updated second edition, this book encompasses the current knowledge of genetic and molecular causes of, and surgical and non-surgical treatment for, congenital deformities of the hand. Divided into five sections, this comprehensive text presents the many variations of congenital anomaly encountered in the clinical setting. Part I discusses general considerations for congenital deformity, including embryology and classification, incidence and prevalence, genetics, anesthesia, prosthetics and rehabilitation principles, hand therapy and even psychological considerations for children living with these conditions. The second and third sections present deformities based on failures of formation and/or differentiation of the axis and hand plate respectively: radial and ulnar longitudinal deficiencies, symbrachydactyly, syndactyly (including Apert Syndrome), clinodactyly and captodactyly, and synostosis and coalitions are described in detail, among others. Duplication deformities, such as radial and ulnar polydactyly, are covered in part IV. The final section discussed overgrowth (macrodactyly), amniotic band syndrome, arthrogryposis, Madelung deformity, epidermolysis bullosa and additional generalized skeletal anomalies. All chapters are generously referenced and illustrated with radiography and full-color photographs. Bringing together the latest clinical evidence and surgical interventions, this second edition of Congenital Anomalies of the Upper Extremity will continue to be an excellent resource for orthopedic, hand and plastic surgeons treating young patients with these challenging deformities of the hand.

Book Paediatric Orthopaedic Diagnosis

Download or read book Paediatric Orthopaedic Diagnosis written by Benjamin Joseph and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a problem-based, rational approach to the diagnosis of orthopaedic problems in children. It is divided into four sections based on the age at which specific problems may be encountered; the newborn and infant, the toddler and the pre-school child, the child in the school-going age and the adolescent. The authors outline a systematic approach to arrive at a tentative diagnosis by asking relevant questions related to the presenting symptom and then performing a thorough clinical examination. They then suggest the most appropriate investigations to confirm the diagnosis. Each chapter deals with the common conditions that may lead to the problem; the rarer causes of the problem are listed at the end. This feature would make the book a practical manual and a high quality reference source. An important feature of the book is the number and quality of illustrations and video clips in the electronic version.

Book The Pediatric Upper Extremity

Download or read book The Pediatric Upper Extremity written by Joshua M. Abzug and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sub-specialization within pediatric orthopedics is growing, in part due to the development of free-standing children's hospitals and the desire by patients and their parents to have "experts" care for them. We are at the forefront of a trend in physicians classifying themselves as pediatric upper extremity surgeons. Numerous pediatric hospitals now have or are recruiting physicians to focus their practice in this area. Historically, these issues were treated by general orthopedic surgeons, adult hand surgeons, pediatric orthopedic surgeons, or plastic surgeons. However, none of these professionals treat the entirety of pediatric upper extremity pathology, and no single reference has focused on the treatment of the pediatric upper extremity as a whole. For example, fractures have typically been written about in pediatric textbooks, while tendon and nerve injuries are covered in adult hand textbooks. This textbook is a comprehensive, illustrated reference that discusses all aspects of the pediatric upper extremity, from embryology and functional development to nerve injuries, trauma, tumors, burns, sports injuries and more.

Book Orthotic Design and Fabrication for the Upper Extremity

Download or read book Orthotic Design and Fabrication for the Upper Extremity written by Katherine Schofield and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-01 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthotic Design and Fabrication for the Upper Extremity: A Practical Guide by Drs. Katherine Schofield and Deborah Schwartz is a unique guide that illustrates orthotic design and fabrication in a clear step-by-step fashion by presenting printed textual material along with instructional videos. The first chapters lay the foundation for orthotic design and detail the anatomical knowledge and background information that is required before molding orthoses on clients. Each chapter explores a specific part of the upper extremity, describes several common clinical diagnoses, and highlights typical orthoses that might be utilized to immobilize and protect it. Together, these chapters communicate core, foundational knowledge for the use of orthoses as an intervention in occupational therapy practice. The instructional videos also emphasize the application of biomechanical, anatomic, and clinical constructs in orthotic design, fabrication, and evaluation. The textbook and video content work together enabling students and entry-level practitioners to learn with visual and versatile resources. University faculty members will gain access to ample activities and exercises to augment their classroom and laboratory teaching. This allows for more efficient use of time and appeals to the learning styles of current and future students. This text includes: Chapters devoted to specific type of orthosis for parts of the upper extremity linked to step -by -step instructional videos Case studies to promote a grasp of the knowledge and application to the development of clinical reasoning skills Multiple choice and short answer review questions and activities for most chapters Presentation of current evidence to support the use of the specific orthoses in clinical practice Patterns that can be replicated and check out sheets to critique each orthosis The combination of text materials and instructional video material makes Orthotic Design and Fabrication for the Upper Extremity: A Practical Guide a uniquely valuable resource for occupational therapy students, new graduates, and novice clinicians.
