Book excerpt: 'Historical memory is an unwelcome guest at the banquet of belief, even in secular societies', wrote Trojanow and Hoskote midway through this book on the myopic certitudes that have fed into mainstream understandings of Western and Indian civilisations. In their defamiliarising story, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism no longer remain stand-alone edifices guarded by their (religious and scholarly) yakshas and guardian angels. Instead they come into their own through a criss-crossing of cultural products, ideas, icons, philosophies, spiritualities, effecting smoe of the greatest confluences that humanity has known. An elegant corrective to lazy generalities of 'globalisation', 'Hindutva' 'Islamism' and 'clash of civilisations'. A brilliant story of 'Connected Histories'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Crem home world the high council was in session. The Earth Project Leader reported that phase one is complete and successful. The satellite sent to depopulate the Earth has effectively completed its mission and the planet is now virtually devoid of human inhabitants. The council enquired as to the fate of phase two, the pilot plot at the so called farm house. The Project Leader was momentarily diffident then continued in a confident manner, admitting that contact was lost with the pilot plot and has not as yet been reestablished. However, reports up to the moment that communication was lost indicated that plants had been rooted and were thriving. The Project Leader advised the council that phase three, the activation of three selected Earth confluence locations, 38N 86W, 38N 87W and 38N 88W, was proceeding as planned. In anticipation of successful startups at those locations construction of the processing plant at nearby 39N 86W was also being initiated. For this an Engineer was being dispatched to direct the activities of humanoid worker drones that will be transported to the location. Security will be provided by canine drones under the Engineers supervision. At the moment, the Crem known to Alex and Mattie as the voices were themselves in conference. "It is advisable that we maintain a low profile for the time being," stated Speaker 1. "The Earth Project Leader has terminated some of our allies on the home world. That resource will be difficult to replace." Speaker two: "Are we in this listening post in danger as well?" "Not at the present time," replied Speaker 1. "I have it on good authority that the Project Leader, while still suspicious of the events at the farm house, is confident that internal opposition to the project has been expunged. Prudence dictates that for the time being we not engage in any activity to suggest otherwise. Let us not give the Project Leader any reason to believe that the opposition is still viable." "So the fledgling and her progenitor are on their own?" asked Speaker 3. "For the time being yes, but remember we have sent them a resource," said Speaker 1. Book Shirley Jackson Influences and Confluences

Download or read book Shirley Jackson Influences and Confluences written by Melanie R. Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popularity of such widely known works as "The Lottery" and The Haunting of Hill House has tended to obscure the extent of Shirley Jackson's literary output, which includes six novels, a prodigious number of short stories, and two volumes of domestic sketches. Organized around the themes of influence and intertextuality, this collection places Jackson firmly within the literary cohort of the 1950s. The contributors investigate the work that informed her own fiction and discuss how Jackson inspired writers of literature and film. The collection begins with essays that tease out what Jackson's writing owes to the weird tale, detective fiction, the supernatural tradition, and folklore, among other influences. The focus then shifts to Jackson's place in American literature and the impact of her work on women's writing, campus literature, and the graphic novelist Alison Bechdel. The final two essays examine adaptations of The Haunting of Hill House and Jackson's influence on contemporary American horror cinema. Taken together, the essays offer convincing evidence that half a century following her death, readers and writers alike are still finding value in Jackson’s words.

But when NASA recruits her to join a team of military scientists for an expedition to the Target, it's an adventure she can't refuse. The ship isn't vacant, as they presumed. Ways of Walking combines discussions of embodiment, place and materiality to address this significant and largely ignored 'technique of the body'. This book presents studies of walking in a range of regional and cultural contexts, exploring the diversity of walking behaviours and the variety of meanings these can embody. As an original collection of ethnographic work that is both coherent in design and imaginative in scope, this primarily anthropological book includes contributions from geographers, sociologists and specialists in education and architecture, offering insights into human movement, landscape and social life. With its interdisciplinary nature and truly international appeal, Ways of Walking will be of interest to scholars across a range of social sciences, as well as to policy makers on both local and national levels.
