The ship itself remained silent, drifting. Dr. Jane Holloway is content documenting nearly-extinct languages and had never contemplated becoming an astronaut. But when NASA recruits her to join a team of military scientists for an expedition to the Target, it's an adventure she can't refuse. The ship isn't vacant, as they presumed. A disembodied voice rumbles inside Jane's head, "You are home." Jane fights the growing doubts of her colleagues as she attempts to decipher what the alien wants from her. As the derelict ship devolves into chaos and the crew gets cut off from their escape route, Jane must decide if she can trust the alien's help to survive.

Book Confluence and Conflict

Download or read book Confluence and Conflict written by Brian Hurley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writers and intellectuals in modern Japan have long forged dialogues across the boundaries separating the spheres of literature and thought. This book explores some of their most intellectually and aesthetically provocative connections in the volatile transwar years of the 1920s to 1950s. Reading philosophical texts alongside literary writings, the study links the intellectual side of literature to the literary dimensions of thought in contexts ranging from middlebrow writing to avant-garde modernism, and from the wartime left to the postwar right. Chapters trace these dynamics through the novelist Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s collaboration with the nativist linguist Yamada Yoshio on a modern translation of The Tale of Genji; the modernist writer Yokomitsu Riichi’s dialogue with Kyoto School philosophers around the question of “worldliness”; the Marxist poet Nakano Shigeharu’s and the philosopher Tosaka Jun’s thinking about prosaic everyday language; and the postwar rumination on liberal society that surrounded the scholar Edwin McClellan while he translated Natsume Sōseki’s classic 1914 novel Kokoro as a graduate student in the United States working with the famed economist Friedrich Hayek. Revealing unexpected intersections of literature, ideas, and politics in a global transwar context, the book concludes by turning to Murakami Haruki and the resonances of those intersections in a time closer to our own.

Book Confluence Tools for Thinking about How Organized Plans and Self organized Patterns Flow Together

Download or read book Confluence Tools for Thinking about How Organized Plans and Self organized Patterns Flow Together written by Cynthia F. Kurtz and published by Kurtz-Fernhout Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A path winds its way through a forest. Why does it go the way it goes? Did someone design it? Or was the path made smooth by feet that chose the smoothest path? Maybe some of both? Confluence examines the many ways in which organized, intentional plans (like paths we design) and self-organized, unintentional patterns (like paths that emerge where we walk) intermingle (happen at the same time and place) and interact (influence each other). The book lays out seven "thinking spaces" that explore various aspects of the structures and relationships that flow together in our lives. Confluence includes copy-ready materials for a group exercise you can use to think about how organization and self-organization flow together in situations that matter to your life, work, family, community, and organization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Crem home world the high council was in session. The Earth Project Leader reported that phase one is complete and successful. The satellite sent to depopulate the Earth has effectively completed its mission and the planet is now virtually devoid of human inhabitants. The council enquired as to the fate of phase two, the pilot plot at the so called farm house. The Project Leader was momentarily diffident then continued in a confident manner, admitting that contact was lost with the pilot plot and has not as yet been reestablished. However, reports up to the moment that communication was lost indicated that plants had been rooted and were thriving. The Project Leader advised the council that phase three, the activation of three selected Earth confluence locations, 38N 86W, 38N 87W and 38N 88W, was proceeding as planned. In anticipation of successful startups at those locations construction of the processing plant at nearby 39N 86W was also being initiated. For this an Engineer was being dispatched to direct the activities of humanoid worker drones that will be transported to the location. Security will be provided by canine drones under the Engineers supervision. At the moment, the Crem known to Alex and Mattie as the voices were themselves in conference. "It is advisable that we maintain a low profile for the time being," stated Speaker 1. "The Earth Project Leader has terminated some of our allies on the home world. That resource will be difficult to replace." Speaker two: "Are we in this listening post in danger as well?" "Not at the present time," replied Speaker 1. "I have it on good authority that the Project Leader, while still suspicious of the events at the farm house, is confident that internal opposition to the project has been expunged. Prudence dictates that for the time being we not engage in any activity to suggest otherwise. Let us not give the Project Leader any reason to believe that the opposition is still viable." "So the fledgling and her progenitor are on their own?" asked Speaker 3. "For the time being yes, but remember we have sent them a resource," said Speaker 1.
