Increasingly, that designation reflects the use of a toolkit of urban planning practices and policies that circulates around the globe. These strategies—establishing creative districts dedicated to technology and design, “greening” the streets, reinventing historic districts as tourist draws—were deployed to build a globally competitive Buenos Aires after its devastating 2001 economic crisis. In this richly drawn account, Jacob Lederman explores what those efforts teach us about fast-evolving changes in city planning practices and why so many local officials chase a nearly identical vision of world-class urbanism. Lederman explores the influence of Northern nongovernmental organizations and multilateral agencies on a prominent city of the global South. Using empirical data, keen observations, and interviews with people ranging from urban planners to street vendors he explores how transnational best practices actually affect the lives of city dwellers. His research also documents the forms of resistance enacted by everyday residents and the tendency of local institutions and social relations to undermine the top-down plans of officials. Most important, Lederman highlights the paradoxes of world-class urbanism: for instance, while the priorities identified by international agencies are expressed through nonmarket values such as sustainability, inclusion, and livability, local officials often use market-centric solutions to pursue them. Further, despite the progressive rhetoric used to describe urban planning goals, in most cases their result has been greater social, economic, and geographic stratification. Chasing World-Class Urbanism is a much-needed guide to the intersections of culture, ideology, and the realities of twenty-first-century life in a major Latin American city, one that illuminates the tension between technocratic aspirations and lived experience.

Recovering Lost Footprints is the first full-length critical study to analyze Latin American Indigenous literary narratives in a systematic manner. In the book, Arturo Arias looks at Maya narratives in Guatemala. The study of these works is intended to spark changes so that constitutions recognize these cultures, their rights, their languages, their centers of worship, and their cosmologies. Through this study, Arias problematizes the partial or full omission of Latin Americas original inhabitants from recognized citizenry. This book analyzes these elements of exclusion in the novelistic output of three salient figures, Luis de Lión, Gaspar Pedro González, and Víctor Montejo. The works by these writers offer evidence that most native people have entered modernity without renouncing their respective cultures or the specifics of their singular identities. The philosophical ethics elaborated in the texts, such as respect for nature and recognition of the holistic value of natural beings, enable non-Indigenous readers to both understand and relate to these values.

Concebirla desde una crítica de la cultura en una contemporaneidad atravesada por la crisis. La pregunta ¿qué son las imágenes? que se formula desde la debilidad de cierta inocencia de la escritura, adquiere toda su dimensión desde el momento en que se confunde imagen con visualidad o imagen con medios audiovisuales, dejando por el camino todos los restos de imágenes que no son visuales. Aún más, ese debate se torna más complejo, cuando en su trasfondo está la «memoria» del holocausto (o de los holocaustos); las imágenes de la crisis política, económica y social o los miles de refugiados, en la paradigmática imagen de un niño muerto en la playa, deambulando por geografías europeas. La imagen es, en efecto, «nómada», viaja por territorios y culturas. Book excerpt: This book is about the amazing story of a US citizen who had to go to Mexico at age four (in the spring of 1958) due to family deportation from the USA and had to tough out extreme poverty; imagine being a partially blind child and having to attend grammar school in Mexico with no special help. He describes how he worked as a child selling vegetables; then, at age thirteen, his father dies, and he had to drop out of school to help the family survive. Together with his two younger brothers, he went to sell chocolate candy and gum in the streets of downtown Mexicali (a border town in the hot desert of Northwest Mexico (Baja California) until he had a chance to go to work in the USA, where he returned as a teenager in 1968, and went to work in farm labor to help his family in Mexico survive. He had to circumvent US child labor laws. Consequently, he had to face culture shock straight on. The Vietnam War was at its worst for US troops. The reappearance of racial conflicts in the USA was bad; black power, chicano power, and white power were common terms; the hippie movement was booming, and Martin L. Kings and Robert Kennedys assassination had just happened. The drug culture in the USA was thriving; antiwar demonstrations and riots were a common occurrence; Richard Nixon was coming into power; and the Apollo moon project was making headlines. In this narrative, he shares coping techniques for dealing with stress, hopelessness, and adversity. He suggests that, by connecting with people, he achieved personal success and shares his experiences in seeking mentors, joining events, meeting change agents (community workers, social workers, teachers, and counselors)and joining social movements. Jesse joined student organizations and the independent living movement and learned how to create opportunities that helped him rise from extreme poverty in a Northwest city of Mexico (Mexicali) to being a middle-class citizen in the USA (California) simply by following his mentors leads, by accepting peoples help, and by facing adversity straight on. This is a US citizen who brought back Mexican cultural values and applied them in his work as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in the USA. A very effective counselor, his mission in life is to help others in similar circumstances to succeed, to help family persevere, to say no to drugs or other bad influences, and to encourage others to carry on until the end of the fast train trip. Thats his philosophy of life. Here he shares a few examples of his counseling work, in hopes that these experiences and advice will help more people in similar circumstances to become achievers, not social welfaredependent individuals.

Javier Sanjinés C. analyzes the conflict between the cultures and movements of indigenous peoples and attention to the modern nation-state in its contemporary Latin American manifestations. He contends that indigenous movements have introduced doubt into the linear course of modernity, reopening the gap between the symbolic and the real. Addressing this rupture, Sanjines argues that scholars must rethink their temporal categories. Toward that end, he engages with recent events in Latin America, particularly in Bolivia, and with Latin American intellectuals, as well as European thinkers disenchanted with modernity.
