Book Psychological First Aid

Book excerpt: This manual is designed to orient helpers to offer psychological first aid (PFA) to people following a serious crisis event. PFA involves humane, supportive and practical assistance for people who are distressed, in ways that respect their dignity, culture and abilities. The instructions and materials in this manual are for a half-day orientation (4 hours excluding breaks) to prepare helpers to support people recently affected by very stressful events. If you have more time available for the orientation, extra activities and slides are included in text boxes to deliver a full day orientation (five and a half hours excluding breaks). Where possible, one should organize full day orientations to allow for deeper learning. It is important to adapt the orientation and materials to the local culture, language and context, and to the likely kinds of crisis situations in which your participants would be helping. This facilitator's manual is to be used together with Psychological First Aid: Guide for Field Workers.

Book The Marriage First Aid Kit

Download or read book The Marriage First Aid Kit written by and published by Hillcrest Publishing Group. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his 35] years as a therapist and marriage counselor, Bryce Kaye has come to know that problems in marriages are not going to be overcome by a self help book, a Marriage For Idiots handbook, or a couple of episodes of Dr. Phil in the afternoon. His work, The Marriage First Aid Kit, is just what the title suggests, a temporary help for couples until more permanent care can be obtained. Dr. Kaye helps his audience work on issues resulting from communication avoidance by showing how to balance the conflicting needs of attachment and autonomy in a relationship. This vital balance is endangered not only by the obvious assassins abuse, affairs, and addictions, but also what Kaye terms hedonic inhibitions the inability by some partners to seek and enjoy fun in a couple's life together. Kaye employs everyday wisdom and therapeutic theory to show individuals in a relationship how to establish autonomy while affirming attachment, how to manage inevitable and healthy conflicts, and how to share power and responsibility throughout their marriage. Incorporating examples culled from his years of helping clients, Kaye peppers his book with problem scenarios to which readers can relate as well as with a useful variety of measurement tools and viable exercises to help couples through the common issues faced in intimate relationships. Rising above the plethora of quick-fix, relationship-help manuals, The Marriage First Aid Kit by Bryce Kaye, PhD offers professional, intelligent suggestions to couples to be employed, not as panaceas, but as temporary help while they work their way through the difficulties of life together.

Book Through the Shadowlands

Download or read book Through the Shadowlands written by Julie Rehmeyer and published by Rodale. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julie Rehmeyer felt like she was going to the desert to die. Julie fully expected to be breathing at the end of the trip―but driving into Death Valley felt like giving up, surrendering. She’d spent years battling a mysterious illness so extreme that she often couldn’t turn over in her bed. The top specialists in the world were powerless to help, and research on her disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, was at a near standstill. Having exhausted the plausible ideas, Julie turned to an implausible one. Going against both her instincts and her training as a science journalist and mathematician, she followed the advice of strangers she’d met on the Internet. Their theory―that mold in her home and possessions was making her sick―struck her as wacky pseudoscience. But they had recovered from chronic fatigue syndrome as severe as hers. To test the theory that toxic mold was making her sick, Julie drove into the desert alone, leaving behind everything she owned. She wasn’t even certain she was well enough to take care of herself once she was there. She felt stripped not only of the life she’d known, but any future she could imagine. With only her scientific savvy, investigative journalism skills, and dog, Frances, to rely on, Julie carved out her own path to wellness―and uncovered how shocking scientific neglect and misconduct had forced her and millions of others to go it alone. In stunning prose, she describes how her illness transformed her understanding of science, medicine, and spirituality. Through the Shadowlands brings scientific authority to a misunderstood disease and spins an incredible and compelling story of tenacity, resourcefulness, acceptance, and love.

Book Mental Health and Addiction Care in the Middle East

Download or read book Mental Health and Addiction Care in the Middle East written by Richard Isralowitz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious resource describes innovative intervention programs for treating substance abuse and other mental health problems in the Middle East in the context of larger issues in the region. Deftly combining clinical acumen with in-depth knowledge of sociopolitical currents, contributors present data and analysis on similarities and differences within the region, addiction issues in special populations (youth, mothers, immigrants), and the efficacy of local and international initiatives. New trends in evidence-based responses, including mental health services in war and disaster, are related to the larger goals of promoting peace. To that end, the editors go beyond the concept of shared problems to discuss strategies toward shared solutions, most notably psychological first aid as a healing approach to mediation. Among the topics covered: Drug abuse in the Middle East: promoting mutual interests through resistance and resilience. Toward uniform data collection and monitoring of Israeli and Palestinian adolescent drug use. Substance abusing mothers: toward an understanding of parenting and risk behavior. Immigration, acculturation, and drug use. Psychological first aid: a tool for mitigating conflict in the Middle East. Collaborative approaches to addressing mental health and addiction. For health psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, and addiction counselors, Mental Health and Addiction Care in the Middle East demonstrates the deep potential for mental health and social issues to be addressed to benefit all communities involved.
