Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Usurpers of the throne of Wessex feared neither fury from Heaven nor the justice of men. When no avenging angel descended from the firmament or hero arose from amongst the citizenry to confront the growing labyrinth of despair, the very earth of Englands ancient graves rent open and issued forth a ghostly champion of their own. Without mercy or compassion, its spectral hooves clattered through the cobbled Gates of Death that flanked the blazing backdrop of Hell and galloped through the blackened night to ruthlessly confront the Kings intolerable inhumanity. As it had since time immemorial, Britains otherworldly sentinel let slip an unbridled rage mere men could never hope to dampen a savage, barbaric indignation that relentlessly trampled brutish humanity beneath its chiselled, avenging hooves.

Book Beyond Mothers Monsters Whores

Download or read book Beyond Mothers Monsters Whores written by Caron E. Gentry and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-08-15 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Mothers, Monsters, Whores takes the suggestion in Mothers, Monsters, Whores that it is important to see genderings in characterizations of violent women, and to use critique of those genderings to retheorize individual violence in global politics. It begins by demonstrating the interdependence of the personal and international levels of global politics in violent women's lives, but then shows that this interdependence is inaccurately depicted in gender-subordinating narratives of women's violence. Such narratives, the authors argue, are not only normatively problematic on the surface but also intersect with other identifiers, such as race, religion, and geopolitical location.

Book The Effects of Prostitution on Girls Future in Post Conflict Liberia

Download or read book The Effects of Prostitution on Girls Future in Post Conflict Liberia written by Julius T. Jaesen, II and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case Study from the year 2015 in the subject Sociology - Relationships and Family, , course: Sociology, language: English, abstract: Prostitution is described as a practice of engaging in sexual relations for payment or benefits. There have been two schools of thoughts on prostitutions in society. Depending on the jurisdiction and community, prostitution can be legal or illegal. A global statistics shows that there are about 42 million prostitutes in the world. Prostitution is frequently viewed as a form of exploitation of or violence against women and children. It helps to create a supply of victims for human trafficking. However, there has not been any empirical examination and data of the effects and causes of this social phenomenon in Liberian society, specifically in the in the Center Street community which is the focus of this term paper. Thus, the purpose of this study is to bridge this gap in the literature by providing knowledge of the effects of prostitution among young girls between ages of 18 to 35 in the targeted community. The Center Street is a local community situated in central Monrovia, which harbors some of Liberia’s leading and professional prostitutes the country had ever known. A prostitute by definition is one who exchanges sex or sexual favors for money, drugs and other desirable commodities. According to academicians as well as public opinions, there are many reasons why women enter the world of prostitution. While many of these reasons may be important to examine, relatively few capture the experiences of women. As such, I will argue in this paper, after presenting some of the basic underlying assumptions that are frequently associated with this controversial subject, that some approaches to understanding prostitution are more valid than others. Historically, it appears that prostitution is something that is typically looked down upon and viewed as morally repugnant—something in which only women with low self-esteem and low socioeconomic status participate. This, however, is not always the case. Prostitutes as well as the men who use them come from all walks of life; in fact, some prostitutes make a great deal of money. Many people have difficulty in understanding how individuals end up in the prostitution industry. Similarly, many prostitutes have a difficult time leaving prostitution. This paper will explore a high degree of investigation from those involved as well as feminist perspectives to identify the root or background factors that lead someone into prostitution and its effects on girls’ future.

Book Mothers Monsters Whores

Download or read book Mothers Monsters Whores written by Laura Sjoberg and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A woman did that? The general reaction to women's political violence is still one of shock and incomprehension. Mothers, Monsters, Whores provides an empirical study of women's violence in global politics. The book looks at military women who engage in torture; the Chechen 'Black Widows'; Middle Eastern suicide bombers; and the women who directed and participated in genocides in Bosnia and Rwanda. Sjoberg & Gentry analyse the biological, psychological and sexualized stereotypes through which these women are conventionally depicted, arguing that these are rooted in assumptions about what is 'appropriate' female behaviour. What these stereotypes have in common is that they all perceive women as having no agency in any sphere of life, from everyday choices to global political events. This book is a major feminist re-evaluation of women's motivations and actions as perpetrators of political violence.

Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this study aims to forge new connections between debates on prostitution, media processes and everyday life in its exploration of depictions of female prostitution in British and Irish broadsheet newspapers between 1987 and 1991. Lorna Ryan first examines a range of discourses on prostitution before proceeding to areas including signals of prostitution and images in the press. Encompassing both textual and visual analyses, Ryan demonstrates that these newspapers relied on appearance, place, time, motive and intent in categorising women as prostitutes.

Book excerpt: A #1 New York Times bestseller: “An everyman’s guide to Washington” by the savagely funny political humorist and author of How the Hell Did This Happen? (The New York Times). P. J. O’Rourke’s Parliament of Whores has become a classic in understanding the workings of the American political system. Originally written at the end of the Reagan era, this new edition includes an extensive foreword by renowned journalist Andrew Ferguson—showing us that although the names may change, the game stays the same . . . or, occasionally, gets worse. Parliament of Whores is a “gonzo civics book” that takes us through the ethical foibles, pork-barrel flimflam, and Beltway bureaucracy, leaving no sacred cow unskewered and no politically correct sensitivities unscorched (Chicago Tribune). “Insulting, inflammatory, profane, and absolutely great reading.” —The Washington Post Book World
