This book focuses on the daily routines of disagreement, conflict and joint decisions on these, and other issues such as work, leisure and children, create in the household. Central to the authors' research is a unique diary study of forty couples, who kept a daily record of their joint decisions over the course of a year. The diaries show how challenging, varied and complex the conflicts and decision making of normal everyday life can be and reveal that goals frequently change during the decision-making process with the result that the final outcome often achieves a goal distinct from the original intention. Furthermore, the dynamics of decision making differ according to the problem at stake, the decision-making history of the couple, and the quality of the partnership. The results of the diary study are discussed within the overall context of current research in the field as a whole, including discussion of joint decision-making case studies, close relationships, decision-making research in general and special research methods. Numerous results of psychological, sociological, economic and consumer behaviour studies are summarised and integrated into a model of household decision-making. This book will be primarily of interest to students and researchers in social psychology and economic psychology, but its interdisciplinary and applied nature will also make it of relevance to professionals working in the fields of family therapy and consumer behaviour.

Book excerpt: A popular theoretical assumption holds that task-related disagreements stimulate critical thinking and, thus, may facilitate superior group decision-making. Two recent meta-analyses showed, however, that the relationship between task conflict and decision-making quality is not uniformly positive (De Dreu & Weingart, 2003a; De Wit, Greer, & Jehn, 2011). In two studies we build upon the suggestion of both meta-analyses that it may be the presence of relationship conflict that determines whether a task conflict is positively or negatively related to decision-making. We hypothesized and found that misattribution of task conflict as relationship conflict (Study 1), as well as the actual presence (vs. absence) of relationship conflict during a task conflict (Study 2), increased group members' rigidity in holding on to suboptimal initial preferences during decision-making. Moreover, in both studies we found that the effect on decision-making was due to biased use of the information available.

The systems-interactionists' approach is presented first. Throughout, terminology and measurements are made to correspond across disciplines so that the work is accessible to all. In addition to relating particular studies and research programs to their appropriate research approaches, the book shows how conflict is uniquely handled when distressed partners engage in problem solving, when disputing partners engage in mediation, and when same and opposite sex partners participate in developing relationships. Comparison and contrast emphasize the role played by conflict communication behavior, rules, and strategies found in developing intimate relationships, the destructive conflict characteristic of emotionally distressed couples, and the bargaining/negotiation characteristic of formal mediation. Book excerpt: The research reported in this paper aimed to examine the relationships between decisiveness in social relationships, and the decision-making styles of a group of university students and to investigate the contributions of decision-making styles in predicting decisiveness in social relationship (conflict resolution, social relationship selection certainty, and ease of social relationship selection). A further aim of the study was to investigate whether there is a difference in the decisiveness in social relationship of university students in relation to gender and academic success. Multi Domain Decision Scale, and Decision-Making Questionnaire were administered to 339 university students (165 females and 174 males) in Giresun university. When decision-making styles and decision-making in social relationships are compared, it is seen that there is no significant relationship between vigilance and ease of social relationship selection. However, there is a positive significant correlation between conflict resolution and social relationship selection certainty, although it is at a low level. The findings obtained in this research indicate that buckpassing, procrastination and hypervigilance decision-making styles adversely affect decision-making in social relationships. The findings obtained in the study show that for a higher level of relationship there is a negative correlation between hypervigilance and conflict resolution, although it is at a low level. The findings of the study show that decision-making in social relationship does not differ according to gender. When the ease of social relationship selection is predicted with decision-making styles, procrastination is defined as the most significant predictor in negative sense, although it is at a low level. The negative predictor of social relationship selection certainty is buckpassing and its positive predictor is vigilance. Once conflict resolution is predicted with decision-making styles, it is seen that vigilance is a positive predictor, and hypervigilance and procrastination are negative predictors. Decision-making in conflict resolution is predicted by hypervigilance at the most significant level in negative sense. Some suggestions were presented to consultants from the findings obtained from the study in order to enhance decision making in decision-making styles and decision-making in social relationships.
